Figure 1 shows the design of a specimen stage used for the in situ observation of phase transformations in the temperature range between ambient and −160°C. The design has the following features a high degree of specimen stability during tilting linear tilt actuation about two orthogonal axes for accurate control of tilt angle read-out high angle tilt range for stereo work and habit plane determination simple, robust construction temperature control of better than ±0.5°C minimum thermal drift and transmission of vibration from the cooling system.

A single crystal stressed in the [3]𝛄 direction at 185°K was transformed to 5% 𝛂 martensite and 2% Ɛ martensite by volume. The austenite slip system of maximum shear stress is the (11)𝛄 [01)𝛄. Fig. 1 shows a two surface study using the electron and optical microscopes. The a martensite is confined between £martensite plates with the (0001)Ɛ ∥ (11)𝛄. The size of the acicular martensite crystals is controlled by the spacing of the £ martensite plates. These £ martensite plates are seen in Fig. 1A as dark vertical bands. The axes of the acicular crystals lie in the (11)𝛄 plane. The £ martensite habit plane is defined as the plane perpendicular to the (11)𝛄 containing the vector defining the crystal axis.

AbstractA systematic study of defects in the Er/O implanted silicon was conducted using TEM, HRTEM and SIMS. Defect-free material was obtained after the annealing of 400 keV Er+ implanted (100)Si. In sharp contrast, several forms of secondary defects consisting of dislocations, dislocation loops and precipitates were induced upon annealing at different temperatures in the 4.5 MeV implanted (100)Si sample. The isothermal evolution of the defects and reactions between dopants and defects were studied. Oxygen tends to segregate into the dislocation loop zones, where platelet precipitates with habit planes of {111} were found. Following dissociation of oxygen and erbium, plate-like Er precipitates were generated, which are most likely ErSi2 with a habit plane of {111}

AbstractOur current understanding of martensitic transformations has been based on the Phenomenological Theory of Martensite Crystallography developed in the 1950s. Recently, a Topological Model of martensitic transformations has been presented wherein the habit plane is a semi-coherent structure, and the transformation mechanism is shown explicitly to be diffusionless. This approach is used here to model phase transformation crystallography of lath martensite in ferrous alloys. A range of network geometries is predicted corresponding to orientation relationships varying from Nishiyama-Wasserman to Kurdjumov-Sachs. Experimental observations from the literature of the dislocation and disconnection arrays, habit plane and orientation relationship are in good agreement with the model.

The relationship between the crystallographic orientation and habit plane normal of transformed α laths in titanium alloys is discussed according to the Burgers orientation relationship and the three-dimensional structure of the α lath. A new method (orientation–trace method) is developed to determine the orientation of the parent β phase using the orientation of the α lath, which was measured by electron backscatter diffraction, and the microstructural morphology of that α variant. This approach is validated in a near-α titanium alloy. Moreover, the habit plane normal direction of the transformed α lath can be obtained from the crystallographic orientations of the α lath itself and its parent β grain. The verification and the corresponding discussion show the reliability of this approach.
