This paper analyzed the application status of Si in high speed tool steel, cold working die steel, hot work die steel and plastic die steel. On this basis, the effect of Si on the properties of different types of tool and dies steels is summarized. There is the certain reference value of the application of Si in tool and die steels.

High temperature pin-on-disk tester heated by middle frequency induction was designed. Friction test of hot work die steels with the same composition treated under three different heat treatment conditions was carried out by the pin-on-disk tester at high temperature. The experimental temperature were 200°C、300°C、400°C、500°C, applied loads were 1kg、1.5kg、2kg、2.5kg, respectively, pin-on-disk circumrotating speed was 1000r/min for all the experiments. Morphology of worn surface and sub-surface structure were observed by optical microscope. Experimental results indicat that wear loss decrease with temperature increasing. Meanwhile, there are various growing rule under different loads, wear loss increase slightly under low load, but increase rapidly with load increasing, especially increment become larger at low temperature. Morphology of worn surface show that the two-body abrasive wear are mainly mechanism under low temperature and low load condition, oxidation wear and adherence abrasive wear are mainly mechanism under high temperature and high load condition.

A novel hot-work die steel, named 5Cr5Mo2, was designed to obtain superior thermal stability. The proposed alloy is evaluated in terms of its hardness, microstructure, and tempering kinetics. Compared with the commonly used H13 steel, the softening resistance of the designed steel is superior. Based on SEM and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, a higher abundance of fine molybdenum carbides precipitate in 5Cr5Mo2 steel. Strikingly, the coarseness rate of the carbides is also relatively low during the tempering treatment. Moreover, owing to their pinning effect on dislocation slip, the dislocation density of the 5Cr5Mo2 steel decreases more slowly than that of the H13 steel. Furthermore, a mathematical softening model was successfully deduced and verified by analyzing the tempering kinetics. This model can be used to predict the hardness evolution of the die steels during the service period at high temperature.

A set of new nitrogen-containing hot work die steels were designed. The best experimental steels and their heat treatment processes were optimized by microstructures, mechanical properties and thermal fatigue tests. The results show that the best compositions of V, Cr, N are 1.0 wt％, 3.75 wt％ and 0.01 wt％, respectively. The optimized heat treatment process is that quenching at 1080°C, first tempering at 550°C and second tempering at 530°C.
