In order to resist tides and salt intrusion, there have been more than 300 tidal gates built at many river estuaries in China since 1960s. However, the serious deposition occurred at a lot of gates due to the changes of hydrodynamic and sediment conditions and lack of discharge from the rivers. At present, the research is mainly to analyze the reasons for siltation downstream gates and the measures of dredging. It is not enough for study on distribution simulation of deposition downstream sluice. Studies have shown that 2D numerical model cannot reflect the distribution of sediment siltation downstream gates. Therefore, it needs to develop 3D sediment numerical model for deposition prediction. In this paper, combined the feasibility study of a tidal gate at Mulanxi River, a physical model and 3D numerical model of sediment siltation downstream gate are conducted.

The Discussion revises the figure that compares different equivalent-diameter equations for prefabricated vertical drains, and the result of another equivalent equation that has been widely used in practice is also added into the figure. In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is developed to compare with the two-dimensional (2D) numerical model used in the paper. The result indicates that the difference between the 3D and 2D models can be about 5%.

TongGuTan shoal is typical pebble shoals of branching reach with bend in upper course of Yangtze river. Based on 2D numerical model and physical model tests, the features of flow and sediment movement, obstructing-navigation mechanism be studied. In order to achieve permanent improvement of navigation condition, it is suggested to excavate straight channel for navigation. The new structure such as bags-filled-stones dam body, irregular concrete block have achieved the good effects. It provides a good example of dredging construction in flood season to the similar shoal.

The waterway of Jiangxinzhou to Wujiang section is the only hindering navigation section in Wuhu to Nanjing of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Because of the unsteadiness of the main stream, the navigation condition in this section tends to worse, in which the regulation work is sorely needed and more important. The major problem for channel regulation in this section is the design of regulation project. In this paper, the 2D numerical model for simulating the flow and sediment in the waterway of Jiangxinzhou-Wujiang section is used to analyze these questions. From the numerical simulation results, we know that the overall navigation regulation project can solve the problem of hindering navigation.

This paper describes numerical model of the shell used in the simulation and determines its stress-strain parameters during the numerical experiment. The results of this simulation show a good correlation with the results of physical model tests.
