Introduction: India carries the highest burden of anemia, particularly in children and women. Children at the growing stage are at the risk of nutrition depletion, hence anemia. Fewer data are available on the prevalence of anemia in growing children of age 10-14 years. It is important to intervene early and track this group. The objective of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of anemia and its correlation to age, gender and body mass index in children of rural area of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Method: Total 600 children of 5-13 years age group were included in this study. A detailed questionnaire was used to collect the health details of the children and socioeconomic status of the parents. Hemoglobin was determined by the calibrated Hemoglobin analyzer. Body mass index values were calculated based on the measurements of weight and height of the children. Results: Prevalence of anemia as per WHO standards in these children was 57.67%. Results of the study population reveal that anemia in this region is more prevalent in girls (68%) when compared to boys (47.3%). However, association between body mass index and hemoglobin was not statistically significant in the present study. Conclusions: Our results suggest that increased prevalence of anemia in the children of rural area is associated with multiple nutrient deficiencies. Nutritional interventions, evaluation of predisposing risk factors and increased coverage of supplementation programme are recommended measures that can be adopted to control anemia in children.

Obesity and overweight have become a worldwide public health challenge and there is an urgent need to examine prevalence of obesity among adolescents. The aim of the present research is to determine health status with respect to obesity of urban & rural adolescents. The data were derived from cross-sectional sampling of adolescent boys and girls of urban and rural population. Age, gender and body mass Index was used to define overweight and obesity. The overweight and obesity were considered using an updated body mass index reference based on the revised consensus guidelines for India. It is observed that the average height and weight, physical growth of adolescents of urban area is greater than that of rural area irrespective of their gender. The BMI (Body Mass Index) of urban adolescents are more than their counterparts in rural area, but the mean BMI of rural and urban adolescents are significantly different. On the other hand BMI do not show any variation due to gender, area and gender considered together. Most of the adolescents irrespective of their area of residence, in spite of their long hours of sedentary behavior are falling under normal category. The result showed physical activities did influence change in BMI, which has a strong independent association with family history of obesity in both rural and urban adolescents. This study analysis showed an increase in prevalence of overweight and obesity in urban adolescents especially with male gender, calling for an urgent need for targeted preventive measures targeting undernutrition and overweight involving public health nutrition interventions for healthy public policies and implementation of equitable nutrition interventions for optimizing public health outcomes for those populations in greater need.

Objective: To assess ability of balance in community-dwelling elderly people with different body mass index (BMI) using multi-directional reach test (MDRT) test. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study design was used to evaluate the effects of body mass index (BMI) on ability of balance using MDRT in community-dwelling elderly people. Results: Obese community-dwelling elderly people had the lowest scores in all directions of MDRT when compared with those of normal weight and overweight groups. Furthermore, in overweight group, the scores in all directions of MDRT were significantly reduced compared to those of normal weight group (p<0.05). Moreover, the scores of MDRT were negatively correlated with BMI (p<0.05). Conclusion: Obese and overweight community-dwelling elderly people had decreased ability of balance. Additionally, BMI was negatively correlated with the scores of MDRT in community-dwelling elderly people. Keywords: Body mass index; Multi-directional reach test; Falls; Elderly; Balance

Abstract Background: The number of elderly people is increasing worldwide, and elevated body mass index is a common problem that occur with elderly people, which can be directly or indirectly affected by level of physical activity and gender. So, it is essential to study the effect of both physical activity and gender on body mass index in elderly people. Material and methods: A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted on 120 elderly Jordanian people who live in Amman (62 women; 58 men) and evaluated for body mass index. Those participants were 40 elderly persons who attended the gym at least twice a week for the last 2 years, and 80 elderly who were home resident or physically inactive. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data about personal, social, health and life-style information including the daily activities and the anthropometric measurements for the study participants. Results: The results of this study showed that as elderly people become physically inactive, their body mass index will increase to become as overweight or obese. The results of this study also showed that body mass index of 30 and more was associated with gender, with majority of female elderly (50%) having body mass index of 30 or more. Conclusion: Physical activity should be maintained by both genders in order to prevent obesity, primarily in women as they are more likely to become obese that men. Furthermore, body mass index should not exceed 30 in elderly. Physical activity is essential in order to obtain healthy weight.
