A new tanaidacean, Tanaella quintanai sp. nov., is described based on specimens collected from depths of 1,598 to 2,853 m during 2014–2015. The new species appears to be most closely related to the western Atlantic species, T. kroyeri and T. mclellandi. Tanaella quintanai can be separated from the two former, as well as from the other members of the genus by a combination of characters, including (1) a labium with apical lobe bearing one blunt seta (2) a cheliped with the inner margin of the dactylus bearing a sub-proximal bipinnate seta, (3) pereopods 1−3 with basis having sub-dorsoproximal and sub-ventroproximal margins setulose, (4) pereopods 4−6 with basis having ventroproximal margin setulose, (5) pereopods 4−6 with unguis bearing two parallel rows of small setules, and (6) a pleotelson as long as pleonites 1–5 combined. A key separating the currently recognized species of Tanaella is presented.

Four species ofLaonice(Annelida: Spionidae) were collected from the lower bathyal depths (3300–3700 m) in the Whittard Canyon, NE Atlantic. Two are herewith described as new species:Laonice whittardensissp. nov. andLaonice nataesp. nov. The other two areLaonice blakeiSikorski & Jirkov, 1988 andLaonice magnacristataMaciolek, 2000.Laonice whittardensishas genital pouches appearing from chaetiger 3, prostomium free of peristomium and bidentate hooks.Laonice nataebelongs to the subgenusAppelloefianov. with prostomium distinct from the peristomium, more than two vertical rows of capillaries in several anterior chaetigers, genital pouches present on a limited number of segments or totally absent. However, the absence of pronounced anterior widening of the body together with anterior branchiae, which are remarkably (nearly twice) longer than the notopodial postchaetal lobes, the narrow lanceolate notopodial postchaetal lobes, the pronounced pointedness of all postchaetal lobes (both notopodial and neuropodial) in the anterior half of body at least, and absence of genital pouches and the size of the body all distinguishL. nataefrom other species belonging to this subgenus. An identification key to all nine known deep-water (>400 m depth)Laonicespecies in North Atlantic is given and four previously recognized sub-generic groups are formally named:Laonice, Sarsianasubgen. nov.,Appelloefiasubgen. nov.,Norgensiasubgen. nov.

All previous records of Pachycheles rugimanus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, from the Brazilian coast are reviewed and prove to represent a new species, P. coelhoi sp. nov. (from Amapá, northern Brazilian coast), and P. ackleianus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, a species already known from Brazil (from Pará to Rio de Janeiro). The new species is described and illustrated, and compared to its most similar congeners: P. rugimanus and P. ackleianus from the western Atlantic, and P. velerae Haig, 1960, from the eastern Pacific (Galapagos Island and Cocos Island). Pachycheles coelhoi sp. nov. is distinguishable from the other three species by a suite of morphological characters, which include the ornamentation of the carapace and chelipeds, and the shape of the third thoracic sternite. All previous records of P. rugimanus from Brazil are considered invalid.

Holopus mikihe new species is only the sixth extant holopodid crinoid to be described. It differs from all other extant holopodids in having large and distinct raised tubercles in the center line of the aboral surface of proximal secundibrachials, giving it the appearance of a mailed fist. The holotype, from 758 m, also comes from outside the known depth range of the other tropical western Atlantic species, H. rangii d’Orbigny. Some comments are provided on the ecology of Caribbean holopodids, based upon data obtained during dives of the Johnson-Sea-Link manned submersibles.

A new species of deep water alpheid shrimp, Alpheus luiszapatai sp. nov., from Arusí, Chocó, Pacific coast of Colombia is described. The single female known was collected between the discarded bycatch of deep water shrimp trawls dedicated to the commercial fisheries of the “coliflor” shrimp Solenocera spp. This new species is placed putatively in the Alpheus brevirostris (Olivier, 1811) species group, and share some external morphological characters with Alpheus hephaestus Bracken-Grissom & Felder, 2014. It can be differentiated by the shape and ornamentation of major and minor chelipeds, the propodi and dactyli of third to fifth pereopods, the diaresis of uropodal exopod, the length of the rostral carina, color in life and bathymetric distribution. Additional comparison with another congeners pertaining to this species group complex from the eastern Pacific, western Atlantic and other oceanographic regions is discussed. A key for Alpheus brevirostris species group from the eastern Pacific is presented.

A new species of the deep-water crab genus Chaceon Manning & Holthuis, 1989 (Geryonidae Colosi, 1923), is described from southwestern Atlantic. It is the ninth species of the genus known from the western Atlantic. It is most closely related to C. eldorado Manning & Holthuis, 1989, C. notialis Manning & Holthuis, 1989, and C. ramosae Manning, Tavares & Albuquerque, 1989, from which it can be readily differentiated in having the dactyli of P2-P5 laterally compressed, instead of being dorsoventrally depressed. A key to the western Atlantic species of Chaceon is provided.

A new species of Ophlitaspongia (Porifera: Microcionidae) from wave-exposed sublittoral rock in the north-east Atlantic is described and compared to the two other species recorded from the genus in the north-east Atlantic. The species known as Ophlitaspongia seriata is considered to be a junior synonym of Halichondria panicea. Consequently, the name O. papilla has been reinstated. The other recorded species O. basifixa, is from deep water. Ophlitaspongia basifixa has characters which differentiate it from Ophlitaspongia sp. nov. The genus Ophlitaspongia has been separated from related genera and reinstated for species in the North Atlantic.

Most lithistids occur worldwide in deep-water environments, but can be found in some places in shallow water. They are not well known in the tropical western Atlantic, despite the fact that they were first described in the late 1800s. We report here two species of poorly known theonellid demosponges (Astrophorina), Discodermia dissoluta and Theonella atlantica, and one new species, Theonella wrightae, from the north-west, south-west and south Florida shelf. There is considerable variability in habitus, colour and spiculation in this species. If samples are taken randomly from different specimens and from functionally and structurally different locations on the sponge, the specimens could be mistakenly identified or individuals of the same species could be described as different species. This report increases the number of lithistid sponges reported from the tropical western Atlantic region to 30 species, but our unpublished data suggest a much higher number of species present in this region. It is also the second report of the relatively deep-water (81 m) occurrence of D. dissoluta that is mostly known from depths as shallow as 10–30 m.

A new deep-water species of the snapping shrimp genus Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 is described from two offshore localities in the northern Gulf of Mexico, south of Louisiana. Alpheus lentiginosus n. sp. belongs to the A. macrocheles (Hailstone, 1835) species group and is most closely related to the western Atlantic A. pouang Christoffersen, 1979 and A. amblyonyx Chace 1972, the eastern Atlantic A. platydactylus Coutière, 1897 and A. macrocheles (Hailstone, 1835), and perhaps also to the eastern Pacific A. exilis Kim & Abele, 1988. The new species is associated with deep-water soft sediments adjacent to clusters of Lophelia pertusa (L.) (Scleractinia) or mud-covered rocks and cobble, at a depth range of 336–438 m, thus representing the deepest-known record of the Alpheidae in the Gulf of Mexico and the entire western Atlantic.

Only a few previous surveys of the deep-water planktonic fauna have been accomplished off western Mexico, in particular in the Gulf of California. Samples of pelagic amphipods were obtained between surface and as deep as 2394 m using different gear during an extensive survey in this area. Among these samples, nine species of the genus Scina were recognized, including 78 specimens: 27 males and 51 females. The genus Scina inhabits mesopelagic waters at depths over 200 m, a community that remains largely unknown. The material examined includes a new species, the first reported from the Gulf of California, which is described and compared with its closest congeners, S. setigera Wagler, 1926 and S. parasetigera Zeidler, 1990. These three species share the presence of a long bristle on the base of the dactylus of pereopods 5 and 6. Scina sp. nov. differs from these other two species mainly by: 1) the shape and proportions of pereiopods 1–7; 2) the presence of three inner spiniform elements on uropod 1; 3) the insertion of the exopod on distal 1/3 of uropods. Of the remaining species collected during the survey S. borealis was by far the most abundant and widely distributed, followed by S. wolterecki and S. marginata. The other five species, S. curvidactyla, S. nana, S. pacifica, S. setigera, and S. submarginata, were represented by one or two specimens only. Co-occurence of species of Scina in samples was low with a maximum of four species in a single sample, all associated with S. borealis, the most common species. The distribution of Scina species collected during this survey is briefly discussed.

Ampelisca vadorum is described from eastern North American coastal waters. It has been confused since 1903 with the European Ampelsca spinipes Boeck, but differs considerably in morphology and ecology. A. spinipes is redescribed and figured. A deep-water record of A. spinipes from Cabot Strait refers to A. spinimana Chevreux. "Intersexes" in A. vadorum are really subadult males. Two generations per year occur north of Cape Hatteras. A small undescribed sibling species occurs in the same areas. Ten other western Atlantic Ampelisca species are discussed briefly, and a key is given to all species of the area.
