Background/Context This study draws on the voluminous research on teachers’ workplace orientations and especially on Dan Lortie's documentation of conservatism, individualism, and presentism among teachers. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study This study investigated a school reform network of over 300 secondary schools entitled Raising Achievement Transforming Learning (RATL) to explore the role of the network's interventions in increasing or diminishing presentism. Setting England. Population/Participants/Subjects Quantitative performance data were analyzed for all 300 schools. Site visits were made to 10 RATL schools in which educational administrators and teachers were interviewed individually and in focus groups. Additional phone interviews were conducted with administrators in 14 RATL schools. Intervention/Program/Practice RATL provided a combination of interventions and supports for schools in the network, including data analysis and capacity enhancement; partnering mentor schools with low-performing schools; regional conferences; a Web portal for schools in the project; and a menu of short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for change. Research Design Qualitative interviews and focus groups of educators in RATL schools, along with secondary analysis of pupil performance data. Conclusions/Recommendations In Dan Lortie's seminal research on teachers’ workplace orientations, he identified “presentism,” or short-term thinking, with conservatism and individualism. This research indicates that in the RATL project, individualism among teachers diminished, but this did not diminish either conservatism or presentism. The research identifies three kinds of presentism—endemic, adaptive, and addictive—that have amplified educational conservatism while altering its nature to fit the current culture and political economy of fast capitalism.

The Life Course

Women are chronically under-represented in investment management, an industry that wields substantial global economic power. This article examines the sources of women’s under-representation, marginalization, and lack of progression within this crucial industry. We demonstrate that norms and practices generated within the industry ecosystem – comprised of industry-specific structures, actors, and interactions – collude to restrict women’s ability to engage with and progress through investment management careers, a process we label normative collusion. Where existing theories have focused on the institutional, organizational, and individual factors that influence women’s career choices and trajectories, our findings demonstrate how industry-level norms and practices can bind organizations to particular modes of operating. To fully understand women’s career pathways and outcomes, particularly at key stages of the life course, we assert that industry-level influences should be incorporated into theoretical models. Foregrounding how normative collusion occurs in the industry ecosystem is an important step, we argue, in understanding women’s career disadvantage, and in designing strategies for change.

Introduction. The unstable political, economic and social realities in the state, crisis phenomena, as well as new strategies for change determine the direction of further development of the fiscal component of the customs security of the state. At the present stage of the intensive entry into the foreign economic space in the European direction, the important role belongs to the maximum approach to European customs security standards of Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to diagnose the functioning of the fiscal component of customs security and to carry out a thorough analysis of its provision in Ukraine, which undoubtedly has a significant impact on the formation of effective areas for reforming the customs system. Results. The article analyzes the system of indicators for the provision of customs security in Ukraine. The functioning of the fiscal component of customs security and a thorough analysis of its provision in Ukraine are explored, which certainly has a significant impact on the formation of effective areas for reforming the customs system. Conclusion. It should be noted that under the effectiveness of customs security it is necessary to understand the indicator, which reflects the ratio of results of activity in the relevant field and involved in achieving such results of resources.

The paper analyzes the role of Design as an agent of social transformation in face of complex challenges. Intentionally embracing reality’s complexity and centering on human values, the Design approach is suited to develop alternative perspectives and radically different strategies for change. The paper explores Design teaching focusing on social change and transition to sustainability, presenting three initiatives and reflecting about methods and impacts of the application of Design for transition. The analysis points to the need of a critical vision in Design research and teaching and the importance to systematize and teach methods and tools to support the interplay among diverse social actors.
