Between November 1988 and October 1996, >10,000 fish from the Breton Shelf, Sable Island Bank and the northeastern Gulf of Maine were examined for larval anisakines. Larval sealworm, Pseudoterranova decipiens, occurred in 30 of 39 species surveyed, including 8 new host records, Enchelyopus cimbrius, Lycodes reticulatus, Eumesogrammus praecisus, Lumpenus lumpretaeformis, Lumpenus maculatus, Cryptacanthodes maculatus, Artediellus atlanticus and Triglops murrayi. The parasite was most prevalent and abundant in mature demersal piscivores and benthic consumers. Sealworm densities (nr kg-1 host wt.), however, were greatest in small benthophagous fish including mature E. cimbrius, A. atlanticus, T. murrayi and Aspidophoroides monopterygius, and juvenile Hippoglossoides platessoides. ANOVA revealed that geographical disparities in sealworm prevalence and abundance were highly significant in 14 of 20 species tested, although significant disparities between samples from each of the three areas were evident only in H. platessoides. Almost invariably, infection parameters were greatest in fish from Sable Island Bank. ANOVA also indicated that sealworm prevalence and/or abundance increased significantly in Sable Island Bank populations of Gadus morhua, H. platessoides, and seven other species between 1985-1986 and 1989-1990. Routine examinations, in which host flesh was sliced and candled, proved as efficacious as digestion in warm (35° C) pepsin-HCl for detection of larval sealworm in the flesh of large frozen fish. Procedures employing fresh (iced) samples, digestion at ambient temperature and microscopy are recommended, however, for surveys of small benthic consumers. Many of the sealworm infecting the latter hosts are tiny (2 to 10 mm in length) nematodes, which escape detection by routine inspection, and may not survive in warm pepsin-HCl solution.

Spatial and temporal trends of larval sealworm (Pseudoterranova decipiens) infection in eastern Canadian groundfish were monitored in an indicator host, Canadian plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides), in the 31 to 40 cm length range. Between February 1993 and September 1999, a total of 8,482 plaice were collected from 33 locations in Canadian Maritime waters (NAFO Subdivisions 4TVWX-5ZE), and their fillets and napes were examined for sealworm. Prevalence (P) and abundance (A) of the parasite were greatest (P ranging from 95 to 100%, A from 7.48 to 15.60) in fish collected from the central Scotian shelf (4VSW) near Sable Island, site of the largest grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) colony in the northwest Atlantic, and from Jordan Basin in the northeastern Gulf of Maine (4X). The infection of greatest intensity (I=158) occurred in a fish from “The Gully” slopewaters of Banquereau (4VS), a few kilometres northeast of Sable Island. By 1995-99, sealworm prevalence and/or abundance had increased significantly in plaice from most locations where stable or declining infection parameters were observed from 1989 to 1993, but abundance of the parasite continued to decline in the Sable Island area. While spatial and temporal distributions of larval sealworm in plaice seemed largely related to the distribution and growth of grey seal populations,the influence of definitive hosts was probably mitigated by other factors such as changes in environmental temperature and parasite density limiting effects in the indicator host.

The present paper lists all parasite species of the European eel Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), recorded in Poland, in both its saltwater and freshwater habitats. The list has been drawn up, based on data acquired since 1844. The majority of included parasite species are presented with fish infection parameters together with data on their developmental stages and occupied microhabitats, localities and dates of collection of the eels themselves. The database includes 62 parasite taxa (including 50 species, nine identified to the genus level and three to higher taxa), representing at least 47 genera and 39 families. The most frequently-noted parasites of the European eel are the cestode Bothriocephalus claviceps, the nematodes Anguillicoloides crassus, Camallanus lacustris and Raphidascaris acus and the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus lucii. Four alien species have been noted from this host: A. crassus, the monogeneans Pseudodactylogyrus anguillae and Pseudodactylogyrus bini and the acanthocephalan Paratenuisentis ambiguus. The present list includes both new host records and earlier records not included in previous lists of parasites of eels.

A survey of the parasites of capelin (Mallotus villosus) caught on the spawning grounds at five localities in the estuary of the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, was conducted in 1994. From examination of 125 fish, a total of 21 parasite taxa was identified (2 Protista, 3 Monogenea, 4 Digenea, 4 Cestoda, 7 Nematoda, and 1 Acanthocephala). Seven new host records are reported for this fish (Trichodina sp., Brachyphallus crenatus, Bothrimonus sturionis, Ascarophis sp., Pseudoterranova decipiens larva, Spirurida gen.sp. larva, and Echinorhynchus laurentianus). The parasite fauna of capelin is comparatively depauperate. It is characterized by the relative abundance of a few species showing a high level of host specificity (Microsporidium sp., Trichodina sp., Gyrodactyloides andriaschewi, G. petruschewskii, Laminiscus gussevi, and Eubothrium parvum) that mature on or in capelin, several ubiquitous adult digeneans (e.g., B. crenatus, Derogenes various, Hemiurus levinseni, and Lecithaster gibbosus), and a number of species that use capelin as intermediate or transport hosts (e.g., Scolex pleuronectis plerocercoid, Anisakis simplex larva, Contracaecinea gen.sp. larva, and Hysterothylacium aduncum larva).

Microscopic examination of kidney tissues from eight Gulf of Maine fish species revealed cysts of the fungus Ichthyophonus hoferi, Plehn and Mulsow, in individuals from three species. Two of these species, the longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) and the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), are new hosts for this parasite in Gulf of Maine waters. The other species, the yellowtail flounder (Limanda ferruginea), was previously reported as an Ichthyophonus host.

We examined larvae of the seal parasites Corynosoma wegeneri and Pseudoterranova decipiens in various fish species collected from Western and Sable Island banks between February 1989 and October 1990. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides), yellowtail flounder (Pleuronectes ferrugineus), windowpane (Scophthalmus aquosus), longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus), and sea raven (Hemitripterus americanus) were infected by both parasites, longhorn sculpin being a new host record for C. wegeneri. Only C. wegeneri occurred in winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus), and neither parasite was found in northern sand lance (Ammodytes dubius) or capelin (Mallotus villosus). The two parasites were most numerous in sea raven and longhorn sculpin. Corynosoma wegeneri was more prevalent in fish sampled in 1989–90 than in previous surveys of Atlantic cod and haddock from the Scotian Shelf. Pseudoterranova decipiens and C. wegeneri occurred throughout the sampling area, but small fishes in the vicinity of Sable Island had the heaviest sealworm infections, and both parasites in longhorn sculpin declined with distance from Sable Island. Increases of C. wegeneri in groundfish, like recent increased levels of P. decipiens infection on the Scotian Shelf, can be attributed to the dramatic growth of the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) population on Sable Island.

Over 90% of 829 banded killifish from three Nova Scotian locations were infected with at least one parasitic species. Protozoans, monogeneans, digeneans, cestodes, nematodes, acanthocephalans, and a crustacean and a molluscan species occurred in the fish. All species recovered are reported for the first time from Fundulus diaphanus in Nova Scotia and 12 are new host records. Five of the non-digenean larval genera found were probably accidental parasites.

A new species, Glyptapanteles hypermnestrae Gupta and Pereira, is described from Maharashtra, India, and comparedwith closely allied species. This new species was bred from parasitized larvae of Elymnias hypermnestra (Linnaeus) (Lep-idoptera: Nymphalidae). In addition to this, two hymenopteran parasitoids, Apanteles folia Nixon (Braconidae: Microgas-trinae) and Brachymeria indica (Krausse) (Chalcididae), are for first time reported parasitizing larvae of Arhopalaamantes (Hewitson) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) and pupae of Pareronia valeria (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) respectively.
