The Impact

A large spherulite structure deteriorates the mechanical properties of crystalline polymers, and therefore various methods have been explored to increase primary nucleation density. Recently, chain-end modification has been proposed as an effective approach for regulating polymer crystal nucleation. However, the relevant nucleation mechanism still requires investigation. Therefore, in this work, 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) units, which can form stacks via quadruple hydrogen bonds with each other, are introduced as end groups for the preparation of interacting telechelic poly(butylene succinate) (PBS-UPy) oligomers with different molecular weights (Mns). The crystallization, especially the nucleation behavior of PBS-UPy, is studied in detail by comparing with the corresponding pre-polymer, the hydroxyl-terminal PBS (PBS-OH). The thermal properties of PBS-UPy exhibit similar Mn-dependent tendency to those of PBS-OH, but with weaker total crystallization rate. The spherulite growth rate is significantly reduced, whereas the primary nucleation density is highly promoted, after introducing UPy groups. Further investigation reveals that the mechanism of UPy stacks’ influence on nucleation ability changes from inhibition to promotion with respect to Mn. Even under an inhibition of nucleation ability, the final nucleation density is obviously increased because of a significant decline of the growth rate. In addition, the change in the impact of UPy stacks on nucleation ability is speculated to originate from the memory expression feasibility of ordered conformation in the melt during crystallization.

The crystallization behavior of fully biobased poly(butylene isophthalate) (PBI) has been investigated using calorimetric and microscopic techniques. PBI is an extremely slow crystallizing polymer that leads, after melt-crystallization, to the formation of lamellar crystals and rather large spherulites, due to the low nuclei density. Based upon quantitative analysis of the crystal-nucleation behavior at low temperatures near the glass transition, using Tammann’s two-stage nuclei development method, a nucleation pathway for an acceleration of the crystallization process and for tailoring the semicrystalline morphology is provided. Low-temperature annealing close to the glass transition temperature (Tg) leads to the formation of crystal nuclei, which grow to crystals at higher temperatures, and yield a much finer spherulitic superstructure, as obtained after direct melt-crystallization. Similarly to other slowly crystallizing polymers like poly(ethylene terephthalate) or poly(l-lactic acid), low-temperature crystal-nuclei formation at a timescale of hours/days is still too slow to allow non-spherulitic crystallization. The interplay between glass relaxation and crystal nucleation at temperatures slightly below Tg is discussed.

This work aims to study the effect of a nucleating agent on cement hydration. Firstly, the C-S-H crystal nucleation early strength agent (CNA) is prepared. Then, the effects of CNA on cement hydration mechanism, early strength enhancement effect, C-S-H content, 28-days hydration degree and 28-days fractal dimension of hydration products are studied by hydration kinetics calculation, resistivity test, BET specific surface area test and quantitative analysis of backscattered electron (BSE) images, respectively. The results show that CNA significantly improves the hydration degree of cement mixture, which is better than triethanolamine (TEA). CNA shortens the beginning time of the induction period by 49.3 min and the end time of the cement hydration acceleration period by 105.1 min than the blank sample. CNA increases the fractal dimension of hydration products, while TEA decreases the fractal dimension. CNA significantly improves the early strength of cement mortars; the 1-day and 3-days strength of cement mortars with CNA are more than the 3-days and 7-days strength of the blank sample. These results will provide a reference for the practical application of the C-S-H nucleating agent.

Understanding the rapid solidification behavior characteristics, nucleation undercooling, and nucleation mechanism is important for modifying the microstructures and properties of metal alloys. In order to investigate the rapid solidification behavior in-situ, accurate measurements of nucleation undercooling and cooling rate are required in most rapid solidification processes, e.g., in additive manufacturing (AM). In this study, differential fast scanning calorimetry (DFSC) was applied to investigate the nucleation kinetics in a single micro-sized Al-20Si (mass%) particle under a controlled cooling rate of 5000 K/s. The nucleation rates of primary Si and secondary α-Al phases were calculated by a statistical analysis of 300 identical melting/solidification experiments. Applying a model based on the classical nucleation theory (CNT) together with available thermodynamic data, two different heterogeneous nucleation mechanisms of primary Si and secondary α-Al were proposed, i.e., surface heterogeneous nucleation for primary Si and interface heterogenous nucleation for secondary α-Al. The present study introduces a practical method for a detailed investigation of rapid solidification behavior of metal particles to distinguish surface and interface nucleation.
