This paper discusses the experimental examination of anisotropic steel-made samples subjected to a static stress load. A nondestructive testing (NDT) measurement system with a transducer, which enables observation of local hysteresis loops and detection of samples’ inhomogeneity, is proposed. Local hysteresis loops are measured on two perpendicular axes, including one parallel to the rolling direction of the samples. The results confirm that the selected features of the local hysteresis loops provide important information about the conditions of ferromagnetic materials. Furthermore, it is shown that the selected parameters of the statistical analysis of the achieved measurements are beneficial for evaluating stress and fatigue changes induced in the material.

Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and magnetometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are used to study the magnetic and structural properties of the (Nd,Pr)-Fe–B and (Nd,Ho)-(Fe,Co)-B alloys. The alloys are synthesized using an arc or induction furnaces. The nanocrystalline state of the (Nd,Ho)-(Fe,Co)-B alloys is reached by two techniques, namely, melt spinning (MS) and severe plastic deformation (SPD). Hydrogenation and multistage treatment of (Nd,Ho)-(Fe,Co)-B alloys, which includes severe plastic deformation of melt-quenched ribbons and subsequent heat treatment, is also used. The surface morphology and domain structure of samples are studied. These pictures are used to interpret the observed magnetic hysteresis loops of the samples. It was found that multistage treatment allows one to obtain samples with higher values of coercivity due to the formation of a special microstructure with oval grain (the aspect ratio equal to ∼ 3).

Certain radioactive isotopes decay by emitting positrons, and the positrons can be used to probe the structure of solid materials. For example, one can investigate the grain size due to deformation in a metal. XRD is also a powerful technique for detection the defects introduced into a metal and for investigating the microstructure of a deformed metal. In this paper we shall investigate the plastic deformation effect on the grain size of 5251 Al alloys using two different techniques, PALT and XRD. The study shows a significant effect of the plastic deformation on the grain size which decreases as the deformation increases.
