SHRIMP (Sensitive high resolution ion microprobe) zircon U-Pb dating of the two main igneous rocks types in the Karkonosze Pluton, porphyritic and equigranular monzogranite, yield 206Pb/238U ages between 312.0 ± 2.9 and 306.9 ± 3.0 Ma. These coincide, within uncertainty, with the majority of previous dates from the pluton, which indicate development of the main magmatic processes between ca. 315 and 303 Ma. They also coincide with molybdenite and sulfide Re-Os ages from ore deposits developed during magmatic and pneumatolitic-hydrothermal (e.g., Szklarska Poręba Huta and Michałowice) or/and metasomatic and hydrothermal (e.g., Kowary, Czarnów and Miedzianka) processes forming Mo-W-Sn-Fe-Cu-As-REE-Y-Nb-Th-U mineralization. The 206Pb/238U zircon age of 300.7 ± 2.4 Ma from a rhyolite porphyry dyke (with disseminated base metal sulfide mineralization) in the Miedzianka Cu-(U) deposit coincides with the development of regional tectonic processes along the Intra-Sudetic Fault. Moreover, at the end-Carboniferous, transition from a collisional to within-plate tectonic setting in the central part of the European Variscides introduced volcanism in the Intra-Sudetic Basin. Together, these processes produced brecciation of older ore mineralization, as well as metal remobilization and deposition of younger medium- and low-temperature hydrothermal mineralization (mainly Cu-Fe-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au-Bi-Se, and Th-U), which became superimposed on earlier high-temperature Mo-W-Sn- Fe-As-Cu-REE mineralization. A few 206Pb/238U ages > 320 Ma remain to be reconciled, but might be due to the high U and Th contents of the zircon and the strong influence of overprinting pneumatolitic-hydrothermal processes.

Abstract A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Visean (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.

Assessment of copper accumulation in archived liver specimens from cats

Objectives The aim of this study was to assess hepatic copper concentrations and zonal distribution in cat liver specimens. Methods For this study, 121 archived, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded liver specimens from cats were used. Tissue sections were stained for copper with rhodanine and scored from 0 (no copper accumulation) to 5 (panlobular copper accumulation). The tissue specimens were then deparaffinized and hepatic copper concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results Tissue samples were categorized into four groups based on histopathologic findings: (1) no significant histopathologic hepatic changes (n = 66); (2) hepatic steatosis (n = 18); (3) inflammatory or infectious disease (n = 24); and (4) neoplasia (n = 13). Of the 121 specimens, 13 (11%) stained positive for copper, with three having a score ⩾3. Thirty-seven specimens (31%) had copper concentrations above the reference interval ([RI] <180 µg/g dry weight liver). Copper concentrations in cats with hepatic inflammatory or infectious disease were significantly higher than cats with hepatic steatosis ( P = 0.03). Copper-staining score and concentration were positively correlated ( rs = 0.46, P <0.001). Conclusions and relevance Despite the fact that 31% of specimens had copper concentrations above the RI, only 11% showed positive copper staining and only 2.5% had a score ⩾3. Our findings suggest that hepatic copper concentrations greater than the upper limit of the RI are relatively common in cats. Further studies to determine the factors that influence hepatic copper staining in cats and to establish contemporary RIs for hepatic copper in healthy cats are warranted.

Timing of fluorite mineralization and exhumation events in the east Central Alborz Mountains, northern Iran: constraints from fluorite (U–Th)/He thermochronometry

Abstract The recently developed fluorite (U–Th)/He thermochronology (FHe) technique was applied to date fluorite mineralization and elucidate the exhumation history of the Mazandaran Fluorspar Mining District (MFMD) located in the east Central Alborz Mountains, Iran. A total of 32 fluorite single-crystal samples from four Middle Triassic carbonate-hosted fluorite deposits were dated. The presented FHe ages range between c. 85 Ma (age of fluorite mineralization) and c. 20 Ma (erosional cooling during the exhumation of the Alborz Mountains). The Late Cretaceous FHe ages (i.e. 84.5 ± 3.6, 78.8 ± 4.4 and 72.3 ± 3.5 Ma) are interpreted as the age of mineralization and confirm an epigenetic origin for ore mineralization in the MFMD, likely a result of prolonged hydrothermal circulation of basinal brines through potential source rocks. Most FHe ages scatter around the Eocene Epoch (55.4 ± 3.9 to 33.1 ± 1.7 Ma), recording an important cooling event after heating by regional magmatism in an extensional tectonic regime. Cooling of the heated fluorites, as a result of thermal relaxation in response to geothermal gradient re-equilibration after the end of magmatism, or exhumation cooling during extensional tectonics characterized by lower amount of erosion are most probably the causes of the recorded Eocene FHe cooling ages. Oligocene–Miocene FHe ages (i.e. 27.6 ± 1.4 to 19.5 ± 1.1 Ma) are related to the accelerated uplift of the whole Alborz Mountains, possibly as a result of the initial collision between the Afro-Arabian and Eurasian plates further to the south.
