European strains of Armillaria cepistipes were reported to be interfertile with strains from three American Armillaria species known as North American Biological Species (NABS) V (A sinapina), NABS X and NABS XI. Such interfertility between species raises some doubts about using different Latin binomials for species capable of mating. This interfertility was reinvestigated by mating 24 haploid isolates of European A cepistipes with 23 isolates of A sinapinafrom North America and Asia. Individual pairings were independently performed at least once at Universite Laval, Canada and at INRA Clermont-Ferrand, France. From the 420 interspecific pairings performed at Laval, two were positive and seven were ambiguous for a total of 2.1% of all the pairings. From the 506 pairings made at Clermont-Ferrand, 10 were positive and 24 were ambiguous for a total of 6.7%. The differences in the pairing results may be explained by incubation temperatures, and the different types and concentrations of malt extract used at each laboratory. The low levels of interfertility found between A. cepistipes and A. sinapina may result from the absence of genetic barriers that are usually present between sympatric species. This low level of interfertility reflects differences in morphology, distribution, and habitat for these two species of Armillaria and this supports the retention of different species denominations.

The distribution patterns of Orthoptera are described for the boreal zone. The boreal fauna of Eurasia includes more than 81 species. Many of them are widely distributed. The monotypic genusParacyphoderrisStorozhenko and at least 13 species are endemics or subendemics. About 50 species are known from boreal North America. Four endemic species are distributed very locally. Relationships between the faunas of the Eurasian and North American parts of the boreal zone are relatively weak. The boreal assemblages are usually characterized by the low levels of species diversity and abundance. Grasshoppers and their relatives occupy almost exclusively open habitats, such as different types of meadows, mountain steppes and tundras, clearings, openings, bogs, and stony flood plains. The local endemics and subendemics are found only in some habitats of the eastern part of Eurasia and the north-western part of North America. Retrospective and prospective of the boreal fauna of Orthoptera are also discussed.

As part of an examination into the systematics of the freshwater crayfish genus Engaeus, an electrophoretic evaluation of specimens from a large number of collecting sites has been undertaken. From a total of 76 sample sets, a minimum of 30 distinct biological species have been delineated. Strong evidence from sites of both sympatry and allopatry suggests some further delineations of species but these must await additional discriminatory information. Sympatric species were detected on 11 separate occasions. In each case, fixed allelic differences were found, indicating an absence of interbreeding between each sympatric pair. Allopatric species were delineated where genetic differences between populations exceeded a threshold level determined from observed genetic differences between sympatric Engaeus species and between other (mainly decapod) species in the literature. The results of this analysis have confirmed low levels of heterozygosity in Engaeus species. Frequent isoIation of small populations of Engaeus species, and consequent loss of allelic variation, is suggested as a possible cause of these low levels. Some species have shown variation of allelic frequencies over their geographical range and, in some cases, this variation could be interpreted as showing clinal properties. Finally, the electrophoretic data have been interpreted to produce some information regarding the phylogenetic affinities of delineated species. Several groups of species were found which shared closer intra-group relationships than they did to the other species of Engaeus.

Territoriality has been documented among plethodontid salamanders in eastern North America, but aggressive interactions among western plethodontids are largely unknown. I examined the responses of three sympatric western Plethodon species (P. vehiculum, P. dunni, and P. vandykei) toward conspecific and congeneric salamanders in two laboratory experiments. In experiment 1, I investigated intra- and inter-specific aggression by the three species, and in experiment 2, I examined aggression and dispersion of the salamanders when fed either a high or a low level of food. In experiment 1, P. dunni were more aggressive than P. vehiculum and P. vandykei, which rarely bit their opponents. In experiment 2, two different food levels had no detectable effect on the aggressiveness of residents. Resident P. dunni (males, females, and juveniles) were equally likely to bite conspecific and congeneric salamanders introduced into their cages. However, their dispersion under cover objects was uniform (suggesting territoriality) only in pairings between conspecific individuals. In contrast, P. vehiculum showed little aggression and were randomly dispersed under cover objects. The variety of responses exhibited by the three sympatric species toward conspecific and congeneric salamanders suggests that their populations are only superficially similar in ecology and may be subjected to different intensities of intraspecific competition.

Populus trichocarpa Torr. and Gray (black cottonwood) is an economically and ecologically important tree species native to western North America. It serves as a model tree species in biology and genetics due to its relatively small genome size, rapid growth, and early reproductive maturity (Jansson and Douglas 2007). Black cottonwood is susceptible to root rot caused by at least one species of Armillaria (Raabe 1962), a globally distributed genus that exhibits diverse ecological behaviors (Klopfenstein et al. 2017) and infects numerous woody plant species (Raabe 1962). However, several Armillaria spp. have been isolated from Populus spp. in North America (Mallet 1990), and the most recent report of Armillaria on P. trichocarpa used the now ambiguated name A. mellea (Vahl.) Quel. (see Raabe 1962). In April 2016, mycelial fans and rhizomorphs of an unknown Armillaria species (isolate WV-ARR-3) were collected from P. trichocarpa in a riparian hardwood stand ca. 5.5 km east of Springfield, Oregon, USA (44°3'21.133"N, 122°49'39.935"W). The host was dominant in the canopy, large in diameter (ca. 90-cm dbh) relative to neighboring trees, and exhibited minimal crown dieback (ca. < 5%). A mycelial fan was observed destroying living cambium beneath the inner bark, indicating pathogenicity. The isolate was cultured on malt extract medium (3% malt extract, 3% dextrose, 1% peptone, and 1.5 % agar) and identified as A.cepistipes on the basis of somatic pairing tests and translation elongation factor 1α (tef1) sequences (GenBank Accession No. MK172784). DNA extraction, PCR, and tef1 sequencing followed protocols of Elías-Román et al. (2018). From nine replications of somatic incompatibility tests (18 tester isolates representing six North American Armillaria spp.), the isolate showed high intraspecific compatibility (colorless antagonism) with three A. cepistipes tester isolates (78%), but low compatibility with the other Armillaria spp. (0 – 33%) that occur in the region. Isolate WV-ARR-3 yielded tef1 sequences with a 99% identity to A. cepistipes (GenBank Accession Nos. JF313115 and JF313121). A second isolate (WV-ARR-1; GenBank Accession No. MK172783) with a nearly identical sequence was collected from a maturing P. trichocarpa in a riparian stand ca. 8 km northeast of Monroe, Oregon (44°21’47.57”N, 123°13’14.415”W) along the Willamette River, downstream from the McKenzie river tributary where WV-ARR-3 was collected. Armillaria cepistipes has been reported on Alnus rubra (red alder) in Washington, USA (Banik et al. 1996) and on broad-leaved trees in British Columbia, Canada (Allen et al. 1996). It is generally considered to be a weak pathogen on broad-leaved trees in the Pacific Northwest, but it is also associated with pathogenicity on both coniferous and deciduous trees in Europe (e.g., Lygis et al. 2005). However, a recent phylogenetic study suggested that North American A. cepistipes is phylogenetically distinct from Eurasian A. cepistipes (Klopfenstein et al. 2017), butadditional studies are needed to determine the formal taxonomic status of North American A. cepistipes. To our knowledge, A. cepistipes has not been previously confirmed on P. trichocarpa in the U.S.A. or formally reported as a pathogen of any Populus species in North America. Continued studies are needed to determine the distribution, host range, and ecological role of A. cepistipes in riparian forests of the Pacific Northwest, while monitoring its populations under changing climates.

Abstract. Two studies carried out among Albanian public-sector employees examined the impact of different types of affirmative action policies (AAPs) on (counter)stereotypical perceptions of women in decision-making positions. Study 1 (N = 178) revealed that participants – especially women – perceived women in decision-making positions as more masculine (i.e., agentic) than feminine (i.e., communal). Study 2 (N = 239) showed that different types of AA had different effects on the attribution of gender stereotypes to AAP beneficiaries: Women benefiting from a quota policy were perceived as being more communal than agentic, while those benefiting from weak preferential treatment were perceived as being more agentic than communal. Furthermore, we examined how the belief that AAPs threaten men’s access to decision-making positions influenced the attribution of these traits to AAP beneficiaries. The results showed that men who reported high levels of perceived threat, as compared to men who reported low levels of perceived threat, attributed more communal than agentic traits to the beneficiaries of quotas. These findings suggest that AAPs may have created a backlash against its beneficiaries by emphasizing gender-stereotypical or counterstereotypical traits. Thus, the framing of AAPs, for instance, as a matter of enhancing organizational performance, in the process of policy making and implementation, may be a crucial tool to countering potential backlash.

Prior studies revealed that low levels of youth political activity are not necessarily indicative of complete disengagement from societal affairs but could be accompanied by interest and latent involvement stemming from a standby or monitorial attitude. However, no prior study has investigated patterns of citizenship orientations including both manifest and latent engagement defined by one’s position towards institutional politics, according to different forms of participation. A questionnaire was filled out by 1,732 late adolescents and young adults in Italy (15–30 years old, M = 19.73, 60.7% female). Cluster analysis identified six profiles of citizenship orientations across different types of participatory activities (political, activist, political online and civic): active trustful, active distrustful, standby trustful, standby distrustful, unengaged trustful and unengaged distrustful. The results showed that each level of engagement—active, standby and unengaged—could be further differentiated between trustful and distrustful based on their attitude towards institutions and the electoral process.

A typology of young news users in the Low Countries A typology of young news users in the Low Countries This article investigates different types of young news users (15-34 years) in the Low Countries. Therefore a survey among 1200 Flemish and Dutch youngsters and adolescents was conducted, analyzing the combined use of media platforms for news consumption and time spent with these news carriers. The cluster analysis identified five types of news users: the sound and vision group, characterized by the use of mainly audiovisual news platforms, combined with online news sites; the e-news users, who give most prominence to online news sites but also rely on traditional news platforms, the all rounders, depending on a range of off- and online news channels; the traditionalists, who spent most time with offline news media; and the dabblers, a group with an overall low level of news consumption. Our results indicate that Flemish and Dutch youngsters combine online and traditional news platforms for their news gathering, giving most prominence to traditional news media, especially television news.

Different types of intelligent rollover system deployed by road agencies across North America are investigated. The importance of weight is addressed for maximum effectiveness of rollover warning messages for commercial vehicles in a potential rollover situation on sharp curves or exit ramps. The type of information that may be used to activate a rollover is discussed to analyze the number of correctly warned vehicles compared with the number of false warnings generated by the rollover warning system. A case study of the effectiveness of an intelligent rollover system is presented. On the basis of this case study, it was found that speed-based rollover warning systems generated anywhere from 44 percent to 49 percent more false rollover warnings for commercial vehicles than did rollover warning systems that employed weight information in the rollover decision criteria.

The taxonomic history of the Ceratopsia began in 1876 with the description of Monoclonius crassus Cope followed in 1889 by Triceratops horridus Marsh. After a peak of discovery and description in the 1910s and 1920s resulting from the Canadian dinosaur rush in the province of Alberta and the Central Asiatic Expeditions to Mongolia of the American Museum of Natural History, the study of ceratopsians declined to a low level until the 1990s, when discoveries in China, Montana, Utah, Alberta, and elsewhere, abetted by increased biostratigraphic and phylogenetic precision, led to an unprecedented resurgence of activity. Even Richard C. Fox, along with colleagues from Peking University, joined in the activity, by naming Psittacosaurus lujiatunensis. To place the activity in historical perspective, half of all known ceratopsians have been described since 2003. Despite important finds of basal ceratopsians in China, Mongolia, and Korea, North America continues to dominate ceratopsian, especially ceratopsid, diversity.
