In the politically-charged atmosphere of 1970s Québec, the French-language countercultural magazineMainmisereprinted an image of a meeting in Algeria between Black Panther leader, Eldridge Cleaver and American countercultural icon, Timothy Leary. Taking this image as a case study, this article discusses the reproduction, representation, and reception of “Blackness” inMainmise,as it is enabled through print technologies. Multi-lingual translation, transposition of texts and images between cultural contexts, and circulation to multiple readerships characterize the magazine’s rejection of Left-neo-nationalist positions. Instead, the cumulative pages ofMainmisepropose a reinvented Québécois identity that is unhinged from territory or ethnic ancestry. Québec is imagined in terms of a planetary geography.

This article argues that colonial time is fractured, uneven, and co-constituted by tension. Despite coercive violence and instruments of temporal control, non-internalized alternative conceptions of time can/do exist, hybridize, and transform autonomously. We explore these tensions through an examination of post-revolution Iran's attempt to project colonial time through the prison system, and the persistence of non-internalized temporal alternatives as articulated through prisoner memoirs and narratives. Prisons and imprisonment, by removing bodies from the body politic, functions to colonize time to erase, homogenize, and mediate past, present, and future – thereby reproducing ideational-material governance. Yet prisoner memoirs and narratives reveal this process to be incomplete as the agency of individuals to retain, create, and testify provide indications of non-internalized decolonial temporal imaginaries. In taking into consideration our case study and recent trends in anthropology, we inject into the field of International Relations an understanding of colonial time as tension, which can be applied to political-economic and cultural contexts in which time is actively being colonized.

Theatre Pedagogy holds that cognition is body-based. Through performance the body’s unconscious procedural memory learns. This information learned through repeated interaction with the world is transmitted to the brain where it becomes conscious knowledge. Theatre Pedagogy in this case study is based on the implementation of a Caribbean cultural art form in performance, in order to teach Francophone language and literature at the postsecondary level in Jamaica. This paper describes the experience of “doing theatre” with seven university students to learn the French language and literature based on an adaptation of two of Birago Diop’s folktales. In the process of learning and performing the plays, the students also understood some of the West African cultural universals of life which cut across the lives of learners in their own and in foreign cultural contexts.

Resumo: Este artigo busca apresentar uma contribuição aos debates de culturas de língua francesa através de um estudo de caso sobre literatura antilhana por um viés decolonial (Walsh, 2013). Serão apresentados como exemplos decoloniais os estudos sobre a tradição dos contos crioulos, registrados e traduzidos para o francês por Ina Césaire e Joëlle Laurent em três obras bilíngues publicadas pela Éditions Caribéennes (Contes de Mort et de Vie aux Antilles, 1976; Contes de Soleil et de Pluie aux Antilles, 1988; Contes de Nuits et de Jours aux Antilles, 1989), e seus reflexos na literatura das Antilhas e da Guiana Francesa. A proposta decolonial também será aplicada à obra Solibo Magnifique, de Patrick Chamoiseau (1991). Para tanto, utiliza-se o conceito de literaturas do desassossego de Gauvin (2016) a fim de opor-se aos conceitos de francofonia e de Littérature-monde – apresentados por Alves (2012) – para designar as literaturas de língua francesa nas Américas, buscando incluí-las nas produções latino-americanas. Percebe-se, assim, grande influência das tradições orais nas produções contemporâneas de escritores antilhanos, além da importância de levar este fato em conta em uma análise que se proponha decolonial dentro da universidade, como discorre Restrepo (2018).Palavras-chave: pensamento decolonial; literatura antilhana de língua francesa; literaturas do desassossego; Ina Césaire; Patrick Chamoiseau.Abstract: This article aims to contribute to the debates on French-speaking cultures through a case study on Antillean Literature according to Decolonial Criticism (WALSH, 2013). The studies about the tradition of creole tales, recorded and translated to French by Ina Césaire and Joëlle Laurant in three bilingual volumes published by Éditions Caribéennes (Contes de Mort et de Vie aux Antilles, 1976; Contes de Soleil et de Pluie aux Antilles, 1988; Contes de Nuits et de Jours aux Antilles, 1989) and its reflections on Antillean and French Guianese Literature will be presented here as decolonial examples. This decolonial approach will also be applied to the work of Solibo Magnifique by Patrick Chamoiseau (1991). In order to do so, the concept of Literatures of Disquiet has been used to oppose the concepts of Francophonie and Littérature-monde – as presented by Alves (2012) – to designate the literature in French language in America aiming to include them in Latin American productions. The influence of oral traditions in contemporary productions by Antillean writers is quite evident, as well how it is important to take this fact into account when proposing a Decolonial analysis inside the academy, as pointed out by Restrepo (2018).Keywords: decolonial thinking; Antillean literature in French; literatures of disquiet; Ina Césaire; Patrick Chamoiseau.

This visual case study is conducted by Le Devoir, a Canadian french-language independent daily newspaper gathering around 50 journalists and one million readers every week. During the past twelve months, in collaboration with Polytechnique Montreal, we investigated a scrollytelling format strongly relying on combined series of data visualizations. This visual case study will specifically present one of the news stories we published, which communicates electoral results the day after the last Quebec general election. It gathers all the lessons that we learnt from this experience, the challenges that we tackled and the perspectives for the future. Beyond the specific electoral context of this work, these conclusions might be useful for any practitioner willing to communicate data visualization based stories, using a scrollytelling narrative format.

This chapter examines the neighborhood setting, which provided the immediate economic, social, and cultural contexts of the public markets. Through a case study of Catharine Market, it documents the piecemeal process by which the neighborhood marketplace was assembled, along with the consolidation of its economic agglomeration, internal social and spatial order, everyday functioning, formal and informal management, and daily relations to customers. By the early nineteenth century, Catharine Market served as one of Gotham's largest and most thriving food emporia. It functioned as the regular meeting point for diverse participants in the provisions trade: neighborhood food vendors, including butchers, hucksters, and peddlers; Long Island and other New York region farmers; fishermen harvesting the city's plentiful coastal and inland waterways; and, of course, the area's booming and diverse population of merchants, artisans, and laborers shopping daily at this marketplace.

This case study delineates changes enacted in the cultural program for beginning-level Spanish language students at a private, faith-based university. Given the restrictions of the pandemic insofar as virtual teaching and learning, as well as the national and international context of racial strife and inequities, the instructors took the opportunity to utilize antiracist pedagogy in order to reach the goals of meaningful content and measurable student outcomes. One of the General Education learning outcomes demonstrates how well students understand the “complex issues faced by diverse groups in global and/or cross-cultural contexts.” Within the context of Latin America and the Latina/Latino experience in the United States, the assignments focus on the intersections of race and gender as they relate to cultural expressions, ensuring that the approach does not obfuscate contributions nor realities of people of color.

This article focuses on female editorship and sexual politics in late Ming and early Qing China, using Hua suo shi, an anthology edited by the courtesan poet Xue Susu, as a case study. It traces textual production and transmission, and reconstructs the literary and cultural contexts of this work to explore the courtesan’s editorial gaze and representation of gender through a close reading of it. The analysis of its two main themes—women as commodities, and women as agents—shows how the courtesan editor re-imagined China’s cultural landscape from her point of view. New examples of female agency are discovered in analyzing the cultural process of editing as a “web of discourses,” providing a window on the emergence of a new female editorial voice in early modern China’s cultural discourse.
Cet article se concentre sur le rôle éditorial des femmes et sur les politiques sexuelles en Chine à la fin des Ming et au début des Qing. Une anthologie éditée par la courtisane et poétesse Xue Susu, le Hua suo shi, sert d’étude de cas. Le processus de production et de transmission textuelle est examiné et le contexte littéraire et culturel de l’ouvrage restitué, permettant d’explorer le regard éditorial et le jeu de genre de la courtisane à travers une lecture serrée du texte. L’analyse des deux thèmes dominants — la femme comme marchandise, la femme comme agent — démontre la façon dont la courtisane éditrice ré-imagine le paysage culturel chinois de son propre point de vue. D’autres exemples d’intervention féminine se révèlent lorsqu’on analyse le processus culturel d’édition en tant que “réseau de discours”. Ainsi s’ouvre une fenêtre sur l’émergence d’une nouvelle voix éditoriale féminine au sein du discours culturel chinois au début des temps modernes.

Drawing on case study material, this paper analyzes a complex negotiation between a Chinese company and local government. It highlights the main char acteristics of such a negotiation and describes the rationale and outcomes of the process. Observations made in a Chinese context may provide insights for negotiators working in other cultural contexts when they address the question of resolving universal difficulties in government-organization negotiations. Lessons are drawn on matters such as the logic implemented in order to deal with power within an asymmetric setting or some workable approaches used in conflict handling, especially in case of deadlock. Finally by emphasizing three cultural dimensions — national—ethnic, organizational and profes sional — this study analyzes some key features of negotiated management in the Chinese context.

This study aims to examine the roles of social media in protest mobilization through the case of Umbrella Movement. Instead of focusing in the occupied sites, the study chose to look at mobilization efforts and confrontations within Hong Kong secondary schools. In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 students, teachers and principals from four schools, with an aim to identify how members in schools used different media for information sharing, opinion expression and mobilization. It also reconstructed what actually occurred in the tactful negotiations between school authorities and student leaders during the movement. The findings of this study suggest that how different communication practices are mediated in particular social and cultural contexts remain to be relevant and important, as the stress on “harmony” in local education settings illustrate in this case study. The strong adherence to political neutrality and professionalism suggest that schools could hardly provide the kind of idealistic civic education stated in curriculum documents. The findings prompted for a critical reading of how apolitical civic education in Hong Kong schools constrained a social movement that was supposedly led by the youth.
