This article examines various methods for involving children in family and child welfare proceedings, surveys varying approaches in different Canadian jurisdictions to the appointment of counsel for children in these cases, and explores the controversies about the role of counsel for children. While child representation is becoming common, in most provinces it is usually limited to welfare proceedings involving older children. All jurisdictions, however, have some provisions to allow for child participation in family relationship cases. Governments and law societies in Canada should develop more coherent and comprehensive programs and policies to ensure that the views of children are considered in the family justice process in a child-focused and cost-efficient manner. There needs to be more recognition of the role of lawyers in facilitating settlement. Appointment of counsel is, however, not always the best way to involve children ; if the child is willing to share views, in some cases this may be better done by a judicial interview, a Views of the Child Report or an assessment. There should be a presumption that counsel will be an instructional advocate, but if a child lacks the capacity or willingness to instruct counsel, counsel should be an advocate for the rights and interests of the child. Regardless of the role adopted, counsel for a child also has responsibility for introducing significant evidence not otherwise before the court.

ROLE OF THE FAMILY IN THE PROCESS OF RECOVERY OF DROGODEPENDENT PERSONS ABSTRACT The family exercises complex roles in the recovery of the addict, where the values, feelings, emotions, are part of a system in continuous evolution and change, adapting, transforming in relation to the pressures of the environment in which they operate, being the family relationship of great importance. The family is considered as a valuable intervention tool to break the denial of the addicted person and thus initiate the recovery process, but sometimes it is usually the main cause of the patient leaving the treatment and even causing slip and / or relapses. A key element in the recovery of addictions are their relatives, both in their detection, acceptance, orientation, channeling, treatment and maintenance of abstinence caused by the dependence of the consumption of a substance. The main thing is that the families are integrated into the recovery process of drug addicts, looking for preventive strategies to avoid the abandonment of the treatment based on the management and understanding of the problem of drugs, as well as seeking to make the family part of the family active promoting a recovery of quality that contributes to strengthen the personality of each of the inmates both in the family and in society in general. KEYWORDS: Role of the family; recovery process; drug addiction.

This qualitative preliminary study highlights a common linguistic practice of politeness in the Javanese family circle called mbasaaké, which refers to addressing or referring to a family member with a kinship term that does not necessarily portray the actual family relationship. This study aims to demonstrate that this pragmatic practice of mbasaaké requires the role of adult speakers in the family circle to novice members of the family. The adult members in the family intentionally deployed this act as a strategy to socialize politeness in the Javanese culture. A small number of naturally occurring interactive turns which involves four family members are presented in this paper to illustrate this mbasakaké practice. The four persons who participated in the casual conversations originally come from East Java, but they have resided in Yogyakarta for many years. The data presented in this paper prove that this linguistic socialization is continuously practiced within the family circle with or without the presence of the novice members of the family. Another important finding is that a respectful kinship term is also given to a family member in absentia.

It is widely held that the proper role of criminal punishment is to ensure in a cost-efficient manner that criminal laws will be obeyed. As James Buchanan puts it,the reason we have courts is not that we want people to be convicted of crimes but that we want people not to commit them. The whole procedure of the law is one, essentially, of threatening people with unpleasant consequences if they do things which are regarded as objectionable.According to the deterrence theory of punishment, which I will here accept without argument in order to tease out some of its implications, legislators must be aware of opportunities to maximize the threat value of criminal prohibitions. By maximizing deterrence, we minimize the cost of crime. On the other hand, creating these threats, and carrying them out, is also costly. So we also wish to minimize the cost of avoiding crime. An efficient deterrent, therefore, will be one which minimizes the sum of the costs of crime and crime avoidance, where ‘cost’ is to be broadly construed.

This research aims to reveal the Moluccas local wisdom through the existence of marriage arbitrators among Muslim community in Salahutu, Leihitu, and West Leihitu, Central Maluku. The data were collected through observation and interviews with community leaders, marriage arbitrators and their married sisters and then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The research results showed that the marriage arbitrators come from a male distant relative who was appointed by custom as a part of the marriage custom. The appointment aims to strengthen the family relationship between the bride (married sister) and the arbitrator in which they can help each other. Traditionally, an arbitrator serves to help the bride in both material and non-material aspects, particularly in preventing domestic violence. He can become a mediator, peacemaker, and helper of the economic hardship as well as preventing the married sister from psychological domestic violence. Furthermore, he can also provide protection for his married sister from the threat of her husband’s physical violence. This research found that the role of marriage arbitrators as peacemakers in preventing husband’s violence against their married sisters is relevant to hakamain concept in Islamic law as well as the provisions of "safe houses by the community," in Law No. 23/2004.(Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan peran kearifan lokal saudara kawin  pada masyarakat Muslim di Kecamatan Salahutu, Leihitu dan Leihitu Barat Kabupaten Maluku Tengah.

The objective of the study is to address the factors contributing to emigration from Latvia, in particular by highlighting the importance of social factors in the emigration decision, using the theory of push and pull factors of migration as a theoretical basis. The role of the family and the desire to improve not only the economical, but also the social and psychological conditions of families are important factors in the decision-making process, while maintaining links with Latvia. The authors argue that social factors are essential to the migration decision alongside economic factors, and in particular the family situation. The family is a resource that helps to settle in the new country of residence. The family relationship is addressed in terms of both “ontological security” and a feeling of “social anchoring”. The family remains important in maintaining links with relatives in Latvia.

Electroencephalographic (EEG)-video monitoring is a valuable tool in the evaluation and management of neonates, infants, and children suspected of having seizures or those with confirmed epilepsy. Monitoring may provide the basis for detection, characterization, and quantification of seizures in each of these age groups. The basic functional components of monitoring include: EEG, polygraphic measures, video, and synchronization devices that assure that all recorded modalities can be precisely correlated in time. Monitoring techniques may vary depending on patient age, clinical condition, and clinical questions to be addressed. Specially designed instrumentation is required to perform monitoring; however, the role of the technologist is central in conducting a study with maximum clinical yield in the most efficient manner. The clinical neurophysiologist must recognize the specific objectives of each monitoring study and appreciate the age-dependent features of the EEG and the types of clinical paroxysmal events that may occur at different ages. Neonates, infants, and older children all demonstrate special features to be considered in the conduct and analysis of EEG-video monitoring. (J Child Neurol 1994;9(Suppl):S46-S56).
