ABSTRACT Glacial diamictons described and sampled during regional stratigraphie studies in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, are categorized using a facies approach. The classification scheme is based on objective field criteria but it is designed to ultimately aid in genetic interpretations of the described deposits which are required for meaningful stratigraphie correlations. The utility of the facies approach in solving stratigraphie problems is tested by the analysis of a complex sequence of glacial diamictons in the Portal Creek area. Genetic interpretations placed on the facies were supported by general agreement between theoretical and observed facies sequences, and proved useful in solving stratigraphie problems. Stratigraphic and provenance studies in the Portal Creek region reveal three major sediment packages of distinct provenance indicating that three separate glacial episodes may have occurred. However, an environment analysis of the deposits shows that the oldest two groups of sediment probably were deposited during the same episode. Changes in till provenance are believed to be the result of fluctuations in the dominance of two confluent glaciers originating in different valleys. The facies analysis supports the stratigraphie evidence that the third sedimentary package was deposited in a distinct glacial episode at a significantly later time than the underlying deposits. Although stratigraphie correlations with dated sediments are tentative, both glacial events recorded in the Portal Creek strati-graphic record are presumed to be Late Wisconsinan in age.

Repeat ground photographs (taken in 1915 and 1997) from a series of topographical survey stations and repeat aerial photographs (flown in 1949 and 1991) were analysed to assess changes in vegetation composition and distribution in the montane ecoregion of Jasper National Park, in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. A quantitative approach for assessing relative vegetation change in repeat ground photographs was developed and tested. The results indicated a shift towards late-successional vegetation types and an increase in crown closure in coniferous stands. Grasslands, shrub, juvenile forest, and open forests decreased in extent, and closed-canopy forests became more prevalent. The majority of forest stands succeeded to dominance by coniferous species. Changes in vegetation patterns were likely largely attributable to shifts in the fire regime over the last century, although climatic conditions and human activity may also have been contributing factors. Implications of observed changes include decreased habitat diversity, increased possibility of insect outbreaks, and potential for future high-intensity fire events. Results of the study increase knowledge of historical reference conditions and may help to establish restoration goals for the montane ecoregion of the park.

The structure-relationships and pharmacokinetic properties of the new second- and third-generation cephalosporins are reviewed. The new second-generation cephalosporins include ceforanide, cefotiam, and cefuroxime. The third-generation cephalosporins include cefmenoxime, cefoperazone, cefotaxime, cefsulodin, ceftazidime, ceftizoxime, ceftriaxone, and moxalactam. These new cephalosporins are semisynthetic analogs with different chemical substitutions on a 7-aminocephalosporanic nucleus. As a result of these chemical modifications, improvements in the antibacterial spectrum as well as pharmacokinetic properties have occurred. In general, the new cephalosporins have longer half-lives, higher and prolonged serum concentrations, and increased cerebrospinal fluid penetration. Selected cephalosporins also have increased biliary tract concentrations. A classification scheme for these new agents, based on generation and susceptibility to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is presented.

The magnetite composition from three sets of samples of Mazama, St. Helens set Y, and Bridge River tephras from Jasper and Banff national parks are used to test whether discriminant function analysis can unambiguously distinguish these tephras. The multivariate method is found to be very sensitive to the change in reference samples. St. Helens set Y tephra is clearly distinguished. However, discrimination between Mazama and Bridge River tephras is less distinct. A set of unknown tephras from the Sunwapta Pass area was used to test the classification schemes. Unknown tephras are assigned to different tephra types depending on which reference tephra set is used in the discriminant function analysis.

Schinias is a small coastal biotope under environmental pressure. Partial drainage of the wetland and different disturbing activities have degraded ecological habitats and decreased biodiversity for many decades. Recently, the construction of a rowing centre has restored hydrological regime and the area has been designated as a National Park; however, application of conservation measures meets difficulties of social and financial nature. In this paper, bird diversity is used as an indicator to examine Schinias’ ecosystem state, according to three different scenarios: the first one refers to the diversity that had been recorded before restoration of the hydrological regime; the second one refers to the diversity that has been recently recorded and corresponds to the actual condition of the National Park with the rowing center; the third one corresponds to a potential diversity that would be observed in case Schinias became a solar saltwork.

This study aims to determine the socio-economic characteristics of farmers, analyze the income structure, the factors that affect the income of farmers, and the level of household welfare of farmers who live around Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Pesisir Barat District. This research is a survey research involving 99 respondents who were randomly selected. Respondents were spread across four subdistricts, namely Bengkunat Belimbing, Ngambur, Pesisir Selatan, and Karya Penggawa Districts. The study was conducted from July to August 2018. The first objective was analyzed qualitatively, the second objective was analyzed using household income analysis, the third objective used multiple linear regression analysis, and the fourth objective was using Sajogyo's criteria (1997). The study suggested that the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers around TNBBS were spread from 15 to 64 years of age with an average age of 43.74 years. The average education level was elementary school, the number of majority of family sizes was from 4 to 6 people (67.68%), and the average land was 1.41 ha. The average household income of farmers is IDR 36,946,883.94 per year, which consists of on-farm income 63.68%, off-farm income 11.00%, and non-farm income 25.33%.. Factors that affect farmers' income are fertilizer costs and labor costs. The welfare of farmers around TNBBS is in quite prosperous category.Key words: characteristics, household income, welfare

1997 was the third and final season devoted to gaining information on the behavior of river otters with most emphasis on nocturnal and diurnal activity. As in the 1995 and 1996 seasons, six automatic camera monitors, activated by treadle switches, were put out at sites often frequented by these animals. In addition, canoes were frequently used for daytime patrols. Field work occurred from July 8 - August 6.
