This study examines the relationship of Canada's urban centres (Census metropolitan areas), with respect to domestic merger activity for the years 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986 and 1991. Log-linear analysis is employed to provide a descriptive examination of the spatial merger flows for the years in question. It has been determined that from an acquiring and acquired firm perspective, Toronto, Montréal, Calgary and Vancouver, were the cities where the greatest number of merger activity was conducted.

This study explores sex and racial segregation within television sports broadcasting. It uses logit log-linear analysis to examine the relationship between job classifications within sports broadcasting and such explanatory variables as sex and race. The results show that women are concentrated in competition-level reporting and reporting but are underrepresented as studio analysts and play-by-play announcers. People of color are most likely to be found doing competition-level reporting, followed by studio analysis. They are least likely to work as play-by-play announcers. In addition, people of color are virtually limited to broadcasting baseball, basketball, and football. Although Whites also cover these three sports, they occupy practically all of the jobs covering other sports. The findings regarding sex and race support the social closure perspective that argues that women and people of color would be concentrated in lower positions within an occupation.

One of the fundamental underpinnings of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) is that the relationship between language-as-system and language-as-text is modelled probabilistically in relation to the cline of instantiation. This offers a spectrum of new ways to approach several SFL concepts quantitatively. This paper falls within that spectrum as it proposes that the relatively recent concepts of coupling and syndrome can be redefined quantitatively in relation to instantiation through two statistical methods – namely log-linear analysis and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) The application of these two methods is illustrated through an analysis of a corpus of twelve online voting-based online debate texts (ODTs) The results and discussion sections of this paper show that the methods can identify and quantify significant couplings and syndromes from both probabilistic and statistical perspectives. Both methods illustratively highlight eleven couplings and four syndromes associated with the more persuasive and less persuasive ODTs writers.

Multi-species conserved non-coding elements occur in the vertebrate genome and are clustered in the vicinity of developmentally regulated genes. Many are known to act as cis -regulators of transcription and may reside at long distances from the genes they regulate. However, the relationship of conserved sequence to encoded regulatory information and indeed, the mechanism by which these contribute to long-range transcriptional regulation is not well understood. The ZRS, a highly conserved cis -regulator, is a paradigm for such long-range gene regulation. The ZRS acts over approximately 1 Mb to control spatio-temporal expression of Shh in the limb bud and mutations within it result in a number of limb abnormalities, including polydactyly, tibial hypoplasia and syndactyly. We describe the activity of this developmental regulator and discuss a number of mechanisms by which regulatory mutations in this enhancer function to cause congenital abnormalities.

This paper summarizes the analysis of four integrated tug-barge (ITB) model tests in calm water and waves. The results show the relationship of the tug-barge connection forces to wavelength and heading, and indicate that the maximum longitudinal, transverse, and vertical connection forces occur at wave encounter angles of 0, 45, 225, and 0 deg, respectively. Additionally, the results of a simplified linear analysis are used to evaluate the possibility of obtaining connection force predictions based on force vector analysis and the relationship of connection force to block coefficient. The contrastive analysis and the linear optimization on the transverse plane linear of triple thread single-screw pump are used for outer equidistant curves of curtate hypocycloid and inner equidistant curves of curtate epicycloids. MATLAB programming language is used to solve the equations and plot linear, and express the analysis results intuitively. When the numeric area of variable amplitude coefficient is determined, it can get the relationship of overflow area with the variable amplitude coefficient k = e / r. So the analysis offers a reference for further study in triple thread single-screw pump.

The present study examined the relationship of expression of feeling during waking to expression of feeling and spatio-temporal displacement in dreams. 41 subjects, each of whom collected either one or two dreams ac home, rated their dreams for expression of feeling, familiarity, and time passed since last experience with selected dream features. They then completed the Personal Orientation Inventory. An independent judge's ratings of expression of feeling in dreams was also obtained. Contrary to expectations, no significant correlations were found between the indices of expression of feeling (Feeling Reactivity, Spontaneity, Aggression) and either the subjects' or the judge's ratings of such expression in dreams. Further, the inventory indices of expression of feeling correlated positively and significantly with spatio-temporal displacement in dreams. These results contradict the theory of Corriere, Hart, Karle, Binder, Gold, and Woldenberg (1977), according to which expression of feeling is inversely related to spario-remporal displacement in dreams. An alternative hypothesis, capable of explaining the present and other research results, implicates expression of feeling in the process of integrating recent events with more remote memories.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.
