AbstractFirst Nations Englishes display continuity in discourse structuring, even when the speaker is monolingual in English. This article documents this cultural and discursive continuity through the analysis of a young Seneca songwriter’s performance of an original non-traditional song, written and sung in English. The analysis highlights key features of traditional Iroquoian discourse as they appear in the song text, and ties those discursive strategies to the social and political context of the performance venue, the songwriter’s family and the Six Nations community. This multilevel ethnomusicological analysis explores issues of genre and style as they relate to identity and resistance in the context of a Canadian First Nation.

IntroductionGovernance of First Nations data and information requires important considerations that go beyond those typically used in research. Researchers are generally not trained in how to work appropriately within the realm of First Nations data. Further, while Canadian legislation protects individual privacy, First Nations’ community privacy is not protected. Objectives and ApproachThe OCA® principles were created to fill these identified gaps. OCAP® is an acronym that outlines principles regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of data or information regarding First Nations. The letters in OCAP® describe four key principles: Ownership, Control, Access and Possession. ResultsFirst Nations OCAP® principles are beginning to make a paradigm shift in research. This shift in applying OCAP® is changing the standard for First Nations’ data and information. These principles give First Nations sovereignty over their data and information when applied appropriately. The principles go beyond the protection of individual privacy to include the additional consideration of community privacy, a vital issue when working with First Nations’ data. Conclusion/ImplicationsOCAP®, when effectively applied, is a bridging tool for both First Nation communities and researchers to engage in relevant, reciprocal, and practical research projects to tell a story, provide insight, and effect policy change.

Many Indigenous communities across Canada suffer from the lack of access to clean drinking water; ensuring individuals and communities have safe water to drink either from their home or from their local environment requires the consideration of multiple factors including individual risk perception. In collaboration with local leaders, semi-structured interviews (n = 99) were conducted over a two-year period in the Dene Tha’ First Nation and Kátł’odeeche First Nation to unpack the issue of risk perception and its meaning to local community members. These local metrics of risk perception including smell, taste, safety, health fears and level of concern were then used to explore patterns in other data on drinking water consumption patterns and bottled water use. The results are consistent with previous research related to water insecurity and indicate that both communities consume more bottled water than the average Canadian. Results also varied by jurisdiction; those in Alberta indicated much higher levels of concern and a greater degree of bottled water consumption.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic impacting communities across the globe, diverse health promotion strategies are required to address the wide-ranging challenges we face. Art is a highly engaging tool that promotes positive well-being and increases community engagement and participation. The ‘Create Hope Mural’ campaign emerged as an arts-based health promotion response to inspire dialogue on why hope is so important for Canadians during these challenging times. This initiative is a partnership between a health promotion network based in Vancouver and an ‘open air’ art museum based in Toronto. Families were invited to submit artwork online that represents the concept of hope. This paper discusses the reflections of organizers of this arts-based health promotion initiative during the early months of the pandemic in Canada. Our findings reveal the importance of decolonizing practices, centring the voices of those impacted by crisis, while being attentive to the social and political context. These learnings can be adopted by prospective health promoters attempting to use arts-based methods to address social and health inequities.

In order to assess Argentine New Theatre and traditional popular drama as comprising a phenomenon of convergence and continuity, one needs first to examine both forms in their relationship to hegemonic culture. Culture is viewed here not in monolithic terms, but rather as defined by its organic ties to a specific socio-political context. Consequently, the central question to be addressed is the way those ties become explicit in the artistic products themselves and, most importantly, in their functionality within the social sector they are inserted in. That functionality defines the ideological line between popular and mass culture, and determines the dynamic links between the New Theatre and traditional dramatic forms, in spite of obvious differences in discourse.

RÉSUMÉCet article discute l’échantillon d’une étude des Premières Nations plus vaste sur les décisions de soins de la démence et le partage des connaissances. L’objectif de cette étude est de mieux comprendre le processus de partage des connaissances entre les praticiens de la santé (PS), les partenaires de soins, et les personnes atteintes de démence (PAD) au sein d’une communauté rurale des Premières Nations. Une méthodologie de la théorie constructiviste ancrée a été utilisée. Dix-neuf entrevues ont ete menées à trois reprises avec deux réseaux de soins de la démence qui comprenait deux PAD, trois partenaires de soins, et deux PS. Un modèle, “Partage des connaissances sur les soins de la démence,” a été conçue, centrée sur les PAD et leurs partenaires de soins. Trois grands thèmes du partage des connaissances sont representées dans le modèle: (1) le développement des relations de confiance, (2) l’accès et l’adaptation aux informations, et (3) application des informations. Des approches sensibles à la culture sont essentiels pour le développement des relations de confiance. Une fois que les relations ont été développées, le partage des connaissances grâce à l’accès, l’adaptation et l’application des informations est devenu possible.

In 2018, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation (GIFN) implemented a First Nation property tax system under the First Nations Fiscal Management Act (FMA)—one of the earliest First Nations in Ontario to do so. Implementation of a property tax system gave GIFN an opportunity to improve funding for and expand local services, and provide a more equitable sharing of local service costs between cottagers leasing First Nation land and the First Nation. Key challenges encountered when implementing the property tax system were building consensus around the need for a tax system, building an appropriate administrative infrastructure, carrying out property assessments, and professionals lacking knowledge of First Nation property tax. These challenges, however, presented opportunities to create a knowledge base around property taxation within GIFN, among cottage leaseholders, and in the wider community. Key lessons learned were (1) start as soon as possible; (2) First Nations Tax Commission support and standards are important; (3) staff training is important; (4) communicate early and often; (5) hold open houses; (6) local services are more than garbage collection; (7) property taxes do not harm lease rates or cottage sales; (8) educate lawyers, real estate agents, and other professionals; (9) startup costs were significant; (10) coordinate laws and standards with provincial variations; (11) modernize systems; and (12) utilize other parts of the FMA.
