Background: The amniotic fluid is fundamental for proper fetal development and growth. Ultrasound visualization of the amniotic fluid permits both subjective and objective estimates of the amniotic fluid. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the reference values of normal single deepest pocket (SDP) – upper and lower limits, mean SDP and variation of the SDP with gestational age among Igbo women of South-Eastern Nigeria extraction carrying uncomplicated singleton pregnancy. Methodology: This was a prospective cross sectional study involving 400 women carrying uncomplicated singleton pregnancies and who were sure of the date of the first day of their last menstrual period. The single deepest pocket / maximum vertical pool were determined once at presentation at the hospital.. The study was conducted from January 1st to December 31st 2015. The second author carried out all the scanning. The SDP was obtained. Results: The womens’ mean and median ages were the same at 28 years. The gestational age range of the pregnancies was 14-41 weeks. The mean SDP was 5.8cm, while the 5th and 95th percentiles were 3.3cm and 8.5cm respectively. There was no difference in the mean SDP in both term and preterm. There was irregular but continuous rise of mean SDP to a peak of 6.8cm at gestational age of 39 weeks. In conclusion, the participants had a mean SDP of 5.8cm. There was also a positive correlation between SDP and Gestational age. We therefore recommend a longitudinal study to assess perinatal outcome and abnormal amniotic fluid volume among Igbo women of South-Eastern Nigeria. Background: Ultrasonography is the reliable and safe way for the evaluation of pregnancy. Heart rate can be detected more confidently from the Ultrasonography. Heart rate is an important parameter for the evaluation of early pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the normal heart rate in embryos/fetuses between 6 and 8 weeks of gestation.Method: In our region people are poor and most of them do not know the benefit of regular follow up examination during pregnancy. So most of pregnant women come to our centre at late stage of pregnancy. The number of pregnancy cases is good in our centre but the number of early pregnancy cases coming to regular follow up examination is low. Thus the study was conducted in 51 normal singleton pregnancies undergoing routine ultrasound examination during the first trimester of pregnancy. The duration of study was 6 weeks.Result: Out of 51 singleton pregnancies, 20 cases (39.2%) heart rate were between 131-150 beat per minute and 25 cases (49.0 %) heart rate were between 151-170 beat per minute. However 4 cases (7.8%) were between 110-120 beat per minute and 2 cases (3.9%) were more than 171 beat per minute. There were zero cases above the 180 beat per minute.Conclusion: The result of this study will help to evaluate abnormal and normal fetal heart rate so that early clinical decision whether to continue the pregnancy or terminate it can be taken, as Ultrasonography is only the method used in screening fetal well being in most of the region of our country.Med Phoenix Vol.2(1) July 2017, 34-37

Objective: To characterize ultrasound images of placenta and amniotic fluid in cases of singleton pregnancies beyond term predictions, and also explore the relationship between placenta, amniotic fluid and labor transfer status, postpartum child status. Image properties of prenatal placenta and amniotic fluid are immediately examined with ultrasound in 267 cases of postterm pregnancy beyond prediction at Obstetric Department, Hue Central Hospital. Results: In postterm pregnancy, placenta thickness decreases gradually according to gestational age. Oligohydramnios is 30.3%. There is a correlation between amniotic fluid index and birth method with r = 0.41. Sensitivity is 89.15%. Specificity is 48.55%. There is also a correlation between amniotic fluid echogenicity and method of birth: r = 0.478. Sensitivity is 97.67%. Specificity is 42.75%. Amniotic fluid index and baby Clifford's syndrome are also relevant, with r=0.466. Sensitivity is 83.78%. Specificity is 78.26%. Conclusions: Ultrasound scanning of amniotic fluid properties should be noted in the case of postterm pregnancy.

Screening of fetal aneuploidies in early pregnancy is a well-established method in the materno-fetal medicine. The aim of our study was to analyze if the medians recommended by the manufacturers are adequate to perform an accurate screening or if there is a need for own laboratory medians calculation in second trimester biochemical marker screening.Sera were collected between 14 wp and 22 wp from 3374 singleton pregnancies. We analyzed three second trimester biochemical markers (AFP, hCG and free Estriol) concentration in all pregnant women and in a subgroup of pregnant women in which gestational age was determined based on crown-rump length. Our results showed that for all biochemical markers the difference between the manufacturer and the own calculated median was lower than 10% excepting the hCG value in the group of pregnant women in which the gestational age was determined on basis of crown-rump-length. Our results show it is recommended to replace the values of the median for hCG measurement with the own laboratory calculated medians. This does not seem to be necessary in the case of AFP and free Estriol measurement.

Seven cases of ultrasound diagnosis of velamentous insertion (VCI) of the umbilical cord at singleton pregnancies on 21–34 weeks of gestation are presented. The ultrasound picture two of the VIC types is presented: fixed in 5 cases and free in 2 cases. In one case the VCI was in the lower third of the uterus and the wound has been diagnosed the vasa previa. In other cases, the VCI was in middle third of the uterus. In all cases delivery was at 37–39.1 weeks of gestation. In 4 cases Cesarean sections were performed. In two of the VCI cases elective Ce sarean sections were performed for the following indications: previous Cesarean section and vasa previa. VCI can reliably be detected prenatally by gray-scale and color Doppler ultrasound. For fixed VCI located in the middle-upper of the uterus, no change in standard obstetrical management seems to be required.
