Asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia (ATD) represents a heterogeneous group of skeletal dysplasias with short ribs, narrow chest and reduced thoracic capacity. Mutations in several genes including IFT80, DYNC2H1, TTC21B and WDR19 have been found in patients with ATD. Both severe and milder course of the disease were described in correlation with secondary involvement of lung’s function. Two children with attenuated form of ATD are described. Their anthropometric parameters for birth weight, length and head circumference were normal but narrow thorax was observed in both of them in early infancy with chest circumference < –3 SD (standard deviation) in comparison to age related controls. The postnatal adaptation and development of both children was uneventful except for mild tachypnoea in one of them which persisted till the age of 6 months. In both children, radiographs revealed narrow upper half of the chest with shorter ribs and atypical configuration of pelvis with horizontally running acetabula and coarse internal edges typical for ATD. Molecular analyses using whole exome sequencing in one family revealed that the patient is compound heterozygote in DYNC2H1 gene for a frame-shift mutation c.4458delT resulting in premature stop-codon p.Phe1486Leufs*11 and a missense mutation c.9044A>G (p.Asp3015Gly). The second family refused the DNA analysis. Regular monitoring of anthropometric parameters during childhood is of big importance both in health and disease. In addition, measurement of the chest circumference should be included, at least at birth and during infancy.

Due to the growing number of patients with age-related diseases, the aim of the study was to investigate in the changes of aging rate (AR) in patients with comorbid course of arterial hypertension (H), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and to study the features of these changes depending on hormonal imbalance. 118 patients (63 women and 55 men, average age — 53.6±4.3 years) were divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n=37) with isolated H; group 2 (n=42) — with H and T2DM; group 3 (n=39) — with H, T2DM and SH. The investigation program included: measurement of anthropometric parameters (blood pressure, height, body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI)), carbohydrate and thyroid metabolism using standard methods, biological age (BA) by V.P. Voitenko et al. Statistical processing was performed using the Statistica for Windows 8.0 software package. When evaluating AR, physiological aging was found in 8 patients (21.6%) of group 1, in 4 (9.5%) patients of group 2 and 3 (7.7%) of patients in group 3. In the overwhelming majority of the examined patients, premature aging (PA) was noted, however, the acceleration of PA between patients of groups 2 and 3 was not differ significantly (p>0.05). The increase in AR in group 2 patients was accompanied by an increase in BA by 7.2 years, in 3 group patients — by 7.3 years compared with their chronological age. A correlation analysis revealed a positive relationship between BMI and coefficient of aging rate (CAR) (r=0.679; p<0.05); BMI and BA (r=0.562; p<0.05) and CAR and the TSH level (r=0.050; p=0.388) in the 3rd group. Thus, the presence of hypertension and comorbid endocrinopathies — T2DM and SH significantly increases the AR and when assessing the effect of endocrine disorders, the presence of T2DM is more important than SH.

Objective. Small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants born with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) differ from appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants by: a) alterations in a number of neurologic and neurophysiologic characteristics; b) modified heart rate variability during the neonatal period; and c) increased morbidity rates during the first months of life. However, there are no data on the impact of IUGR on respiratory function control at birth. Methods. We studied 57 newborns who were 35 to 36, 37 to 38, and 39 to 41 weeks' conceptional age (CA): 31 were AGA and 26 were SGA. All were clinically and neurologically normal at birth and none exhibited abnormal events during the first year of life. Polygraphic recordings were performed between two meals during the normal postnatal stay in the maternity ward. Results. During both active sleep (AS) and quiet sleep (QS), SGA infants in all CA groups had significently higher values for the incidence of 2 to 4.9 seconds and 5 to 9.9 seconds central respiratory pauses (RP), the apnea index (AI) [AI = % of nonbreathing time], and the time spent with periodic breathing (PB), as compared with AGA infants Respiratory frequency was usually similar in SGA and AGA infants. In addition, the trend of age-related respiratory modifications was disturbed in SGA infants, as compared with AGA infants: at 39 to 41 weeks CA, SGA infants had no significant decreases in RP, AI, or PB, and no increase in respiratory frequency. However, between-state differences were similar in both groups. In all AGA and SGA infant groups respiratory frequency seemed to be an individual characteristic: infants who breathed faster during AS breathed faster during QS, and vice-versa. Conclusion. Our data demonstrate significant modifications in the establishment of respiratory rhythm control in SGA infants, whereas the patterns of state-related and subject-dependent breathing characteristics were similar in SGA and AGA infants. We speculate that the dysregulation of respiratory function control maturation observed in healthy SGA infants may be related to subtle brainstem modifications attributable to the decreased blood supply and chronic hypoxia associated with IUGR.

Aging is considered the major risk factor for most chronic disorders. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are two major contributors for cellular senescence, downregulation of stress response pathways with a decrease of protective cellular activity and accumulation of cellular damage, leading in time to age-related diseases. This review investigated the most recent clinical trials and cohort studies published in the last ten years, which presented the influence of tree nut and peanut antioxidant diets in preventing or delaying age-related diseases in middle-aged and elderly subjects (≥55 years old). Tree nut and peanut ingestion has the possibility to influence blood lipid count, biochemical and anthropometric parameters, endothelial function and inflammatory biomarkers, thereby positively affecting cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality, cancers, and cognitive disorders, mainly through the nuts’ healthy lipid profile and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of actions. Clinical evidence and scientific findings demonstrate the importance of diets characterized by a high intake of nuts and emphasize their potential in preventing age-related diseases, validating the addition of tree nuts and peanuts in the diet of older adults. Therefore, increased consumption of bioactive antioxidant compounds from nuts clearly impacts many risk factors related to aging and can extend health span and lifespan.
