Driven by the growth of a global economy and developments in high technology, the process of creating and translating technical documentation has been evolving rapidly. In particular, machine translation (MT) has shown increasing capabilities of efficaciously accomplishing the early stages of the eight stages of translation identified years ago by Robert Bly. As a consequence, translators have learned to use MT as a tool to accelerate their work, but they have also grown wary of MT’s potential for replacing them. To ensure steady employment, some translators have begun cross-training as technical writers; correspondingly, a few technical writers have begun cross-training as translators, as the two professions appear to be undergoing a gradual trend of convergence. Academic programs are urged to respond to the evolving trends.

In this article, the authors study the aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic’s continuing impact on the global economy, and assess the interim economic results of 2020. The forward and backward linkage between the COVID-19 pandemic and international tourism is highlighted. The current state and further development prospects of the global tourism business are assessed on the example of the global crises that have taken place before. The authors have studied the current characteristics of the sector in the context of the continuing impact of protective measures involving population’s limited mobility and social distancing, a general assessment of the current global crisis impact on international and regional tourism is given. Further, the authors consider the need of tourism industry adaptation to new conditions, provide examples of modern tourism development, and identify areas that are most promising in terms of restoring the sector in the post-pandemic period. Since the current trends, according to experts, will be relevant in 2021, the authors determine the need for continuing adaptation of the sector to new conditions, taking into account the implementation of a sustainable development policy, and assess the prospects for the sector’s recovery during the crisis and post-crisis periods as an object of state policy within the framework of the "green" transformation of the economy.

Today's global economy demands that new graduates excel in not only technical knowledge but also professional skills. In fact, the lack of professional skills in project teams has been identified among the most important factors contributing to the high failure rate of complex engineering projects. As a response, academic programs have incorporated professional skills in their curricula. However, there are challenges in the assessment of learning outcomes related to professional skills. This paper presents a novel assessment framework based on the Model of Domain Learning, to assess students' development in professional skills across different disciplines. The proposed assessment model can be tailored to various learning objectives and student levels to facilitate integration of the assessment of professional skills into an overall program assessment plan. An empirical study, which assesses the teamwork communication skills, is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework and its advantages as compared to other traditional assessment rubrics in engineering and technology education.

Abstract The design phase is the most important step of the lifecycle of a technical system. If the manufacture process of any product is based on high quality technical documentation, then there is a chance to achieve a very good product. The paper aims to provide a method for determining the optimal variant of a technical project based on certain technical, economic conditions or terms of use imposed in the early stages of design.

In this paper the authors took into consideration professional training of specialists who can use technical documentation in a foreign language. The definition of machine translation, its value, main advantages and disadvantages were examined. This research showed the importance of machine translation and the need to train students of technical specialties in MT skills. The model of a special program for training students and its theoretical and practical parts were described. Based on the results of the error analysis, the error types were categorized into 3 categories. The results of the tests were analysed and shown in the tables. A significant decrease in the number of errors was noted. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications were discussed regarding how teachers can successfully and effectively incorporate MT into the classroom studies.

This paper focuses on one aspect of controlled authoring in a localization and Machine-Translation context: the treatment of GUI options, which abound in the procedural sections of IT technical documentation. GUI options are technical terms that refer to the Software User Interface. The length and complexity of GUI options is a major problem for numerous NLP tasks, including MT. GUI options which have not been identified by NLP applications typically lead to erroneous analyses of sentences. However, few authors have focused on the identification and tagging of GUI options in IT documentation. This paper delineates an approach based on a controlled language checker that benefits both the human authoring process and Machine Translation.

The quality of the U.S. workforce is critical for a competitive economy in today’s fast-paced, tightly connected global economy. Given current trends the quality of the U.S. workforce, measured in educational attainment and knowledge of key concepts in science, mathematics, and engineering will actually decline in coming years. Conventional methods will simply not be adequate to the enormous task of improving this situation. The technology and management tools that have been used so successfully to increase both quality and productivity in other service enterprises can play a vital role in improving science and mathematics education and training.
