Two-dimensional (2D) triaxial braided composites with braiding angle (± 60°/0°) have been used as aero-engine containing casing material. In the current paper, three types of projectile with the same mass and equivalent diameter, including cylinder gelatin projectile, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP), and titanium alloy blade-like projectile, were employed to impact on triaxial braided composites panels with thickness of 4.3 mm at room temperature (20 °C) to figure out the influences of projectile materials on the damage pattern and energy absorption behavior. Furthermore, the influences of environmental temperature were also discussed considering the aviation service condition by conducting ballistic impact tests using CFRP projectile at cryogenic temperature (−50 °C) and high temperature (150 °C). The triaxial braided target panel were pre-heated or cooled in a low-temperature chamber before mounted. It is found that soft gelatin project mainly causes global deformation of the target and therefore absorb much more energy. The triaxial braided composite absorb 77.59% more energy when impacted with CFRP projectile than that with titanium alloy projectile, which mainly results in shear fracture. The environmental temperature has influences on the damage pattern and energy absorption of triaxial braided composites. The cryogenic temperature deteriorates the impact resistance of the triaxial braided composite material with matrix cracking damage pattern, while high temperature condition improves its impact resistance with shearing fracture damage pattern.

A novel synergistic multi-scale modeling framework with a coupling of micro- and meso-scale is proposed to predict damage behaviors of 2D-triaxially braided composite (2DTBC). Based on the Bridge model, the internal stress and micro damage of constituent materials are respectively coupled with the stress and damage of tow. The initial effective elastic properties of tow (IEEP) used as the predefined data are estimated by micro-mechanics models. Due to in-situ effects, stress concentration factor (SCF) is considered in the micro matrix, exhibiting progressive damage accumulation. Comparisons of IEEP and strengths between the Bridge and Chamis’ theory are conducted to validate the values of IEEP and SCF. Based on the representative volume element (RVE), the macro properties and damage modes of 2DTBC are predicted to be consistent with available experiments and meso-scale simulation. Both axial and transverse damage mechanisms of 2DTBC under tensile or compressive load are revealed. Micro fiber and matrix damage accumulations have significant effects on the meso-scale axial and transverse damage of tows due to multi-scale coupling effects. Different from existing meso-/multi-scale models, the proposed multi-scale model can capture a crucial phenomenon that the transverse damage of tow is vulnerable to micro fiber fracture. The proposed multi-scale framework provides a robust tool for future systematic studies on constituent materials level to larger-scale aeronautical materials.

AbstractBraided composite stent (BCS), woven with nitinol wires and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strips, provides a hybrid design of stent. The mechanical performance of this novel stent has not been fully investigated yet. In this work, the influence of five main design factors (number of nitinol wires, braiding angle, diameter of nitinol wire, thickness and stiffness of the PET strip) on the surface coverage, radial strength, and flexibility of the BCS were systematically studied using computational models. The orthogonal experimental design was adopted to quantitatively analyze the sensitivity of multiple factors using the minimal number of study cases. Results have shown that the nitinol wire diameter and the braiding angle are two most important factors determining the mechanical performance of the BCS. A larger nitinol wire diameter led to a larger radial strength and less flexibility of the BCS. A larger braiding angle could provide a larger radial strength and better flexibility. In addition, the impact of the braiding angle decreased when the stent underwent a large deformation. At the same time, the impact of the PET strips increased due to the interaction with nitinol wires. Moreover, the number of PET strips played an important role in the surface coverage. This study could help understand the mechanical performance of BCS stent and provides guidance on the optimal design of the stent targeting less complications.
