We describe a methodology for constructing tabular potentials of supertoroids with short-range interactions, which requires the calculation of the volume of overlap of these shapes for many relative positions and orientations. Recent advances in the synthesis of anisotropic colloids have made experimental realizations of such particles feasible and have increased the practical impact of fundamental simulation studies of these families of shapes. This extends our recent work on superquadric potentials to now include a family of ring-like shapes with a hole in the middle. Along with the addition of supertoroids, the ability to make tables for nonidentical particles and particle pairs with multiple, disconnected overlap volumes was added. Using newly developed extensions to a previously published algorithm, we produced tabular potentials for all of these new cases. The algorithmic developments in this work will enable Monte Carlo simulations of a wider variety of shapes to predict thermodynamic properties over a range of conditions.

The miscibility gap in H2–H2O mixtures is investigated by conducting Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. Our results indicate that H2–H2O immiscibility regions may have a significant impact on the structure and evolution of ice giant planets.

The spatial distribution of light through a rectangular gap bounded by highly reflective, diffuse surfaces was measured and compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulations. Incorporating radiant properties for real surfaces into a Monte Carlo code was seen to be a significant problem; a number of techniques for accomplishing this are discussed. Independent results are reported for measured values of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function over incident polar angles from 0 to 90 deg for a semidiffuse surface treatment (Krylon™ flat white spray paint). The inclusion of this information into a Monte Carlo simulation yielded various levels of agreement with experimental results. The poorest agreement occurred when the incident radiation was at a grazing angle with respect to the surface and the reflectance was nearly specular.

Abstract To account for the interference effects of the Coulomb and exchange interactions of electrons the new path integral representation of the density matrix has been developed in the canonical ensemble at finite temperatures. The developed representation allows to reduce the notorious ``fermionic sign problem'' in the path integral Monte Carlo simulations of fermionic systems. The obtained results for pair distribution functions in plasma and uniform electron gas demonstrate the short--range quantum ordering of electrons associated in literature with exchange--correlation excitons. The charge estimations show the excitonic electric neutrality. Comparison of the internal energy with available ones in the literature demonstrates that the short range ordering does not give noticeable contributions in integral thermodynamic characteristics. This fine physical effect was not observed earlier in the standard path integral Monte Carlo simulations.
