Study on Reducing Communication Stress in Marine Engine Room Situation

A marine powerplant on a large supertanker is a complex system made up of a number of interconnected subsystems where most functions are automated. A human operator manages the system in supervisory control mode, intervening only when an event occurs requiring his action to restore normal operations. For training marine engineering personnel to detect, diagnose, and compensate for failures, simulators at different fidelity levels are being developed. A low fidelity simulator uses information displayed on an Apple II computer terminal in conjunction with system schematics provided on paper. Details of the low fidelity simulator are described, and the results of a pilot experiment are discussed.

The Cost

To improve the training effect of marine engine room simulator in the aspect of training marine engineer and save the cost of training in real ships, this paper extends the framework of traditional marine engine room simulator by taking full advantage of visual simulation technology and the configuration of framework is presented. The framework is divided into three parts by functionality which is three-dimensional engine room visual simulation side, server side and two-dimensional marine engine room simulator side and the function of each part is also described in details. To implement the function of interaction and collaborative operation of marine engine room simulator under this framework, communication protocol between three-dimensional side and two-dimensional is established and processing mode of interactive entity is designed. This marine engine visual simulation training system has been applied to actual training, achieved better training effect and save the cost of training in real ships of marine education effectively.

Important Significance

Aiming at the present deficiency of operation examination for marine engine, a simulation system of marine engine based on virtual reality is developed. In this paper, the virtual scene and 3D entity model of marine engine is constructed by 3DS MAX according to the actual situation of engine room and the specific operation requirements, and then the 3D model is driven by DirectX in the environment of Visual C++6.0 to achieve the functions of VR scene roaming, human-computer interaction and operation examination. The VR simulation system developed as a part of the whole marine engine simulator can supply an almost real environment for the crew operation examination, which will greatly improve the operation ability of crew, being of important significance for the reform of crew examination in China.
