The novelty of the present study is that it investigates the effect of propeller shaft deflection, caused by the propeller self-weight and interfacial mixed forces, on the fluid–solid–heat (FSH) coupling performance of water lubricated rubber stern bearing (WLRSB). In the FSH coupling model, the generalized average Reynolds equation and the Kogut–Etsion asperity contact model are used to determine the hydrodynamic and the elastic–plastic contact behaviors of WLRSB. In the thermal analysis, the journal, water film, and rubber bushing are considered as an integrated system (JWR system) using the Euler method. To prove the correctness of the developed model, the predicted results are verified by comparisons with the experimental results given in the literature. In addition, to assess the effect of the force-driven deflection during FSH simulation, comparisons of the FSH predictions between the aligned journal case and the deflected journal case are carried out. The results indicate that, especially under a heavy load condition, the deflection of the stern shaft should be incorporated into the lubrication gap between the journal–rubber interface during the analysis of FSH performance of the JWR system.

Abstract The article discusses a key problem of ship propulsion system vibration diagnostics, which concerns assessing this part of mechanical energy transmitted from the main engine to the ship propeller which is dissipated due to propeller shaft vibration. A simplified calculation model is proposed which allows the total energy of the generated torsional vibration to be assessed from the shaft deflection amplitude measured at the mind-span point between the supports. To verify the developed model, pilot tests were performed on the laboratory rotational mechanical system test rig. In those tests, cyclic bending moment was applied to a unified (cylindrical) material sample, which modelled, at an appropriate scale, structural and functional properties of a real propeller shaft.

The calculation accuracy of unbalanced magnetic forces (UMF) is very important to the design of rotor length, because it will effect the shaft deflection. But in some permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) with fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCW), the UMF caused by asymmetrical stator topology structure is not considered in the existing deflection calculation, which is very fatal for the operational reliability, especially for the PMSMs with the large length-diameter ratio, such as submersible PMSMs. Therefore, the part of UMF in the asymmetrical stator topology structure PMSMs caused by the choice of pole-slot combinations is analysized in this paper, and a more accurate rotor deflection calculation method is also proposed.

This work investigates the transient effects of a single subsurface inclusion over the pressure, film thickness, and von Mises stress in a line elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact. Results are obtained with a fully-coupled finite element model for either a stiff or a soft inclusion moving at the speed of the surface. Two cases analyzed consider the inclusion moving either at the same speed as the mean velocity of the lubricant or moving slower. Two additional cases investigate reducing either the size of the inclusion or its stiffness differential with respect to the matrix. It is shown that the well-known two-wave elastohydrodynamic lubrication mechanism induced by surface features is also applicable to the inclusions. Also, that the effects of the inclusion become weaker both when its size is reduced and when its stiffness approaches that of the matrix. A direct comparison with predictions by the semi-analytical model of Morales-Espejel et al. ( Proc IMechE, Part J: J Engineering Tribology 2017; 231) shows reasonable qualitative agreement. Quantitatively some differences are observed which, after accounting for the semi-analytical model's simplicity, physical agreement, and computational efficiency, may then be considered as reasonable for engineering applications.
