Researchers have unanimously suggested forgiveness to be closely linked with a host of positive life outcomes for people across all developmental periods. The scientific endeavours have largely been confined to the study of adults’ forgiveness mostly employing quantitative methods and, thus, have oversighted the study of children’s forgiveness despite its similar and noticeable relevance to their life outcomes. To bridge this gap, this study aims to explore the nature, attributes and perceived consequences of forgiveness for children. The study was carried out on full-time mothers of 4 male (5-10 years) and 4 female (4.50-9.50 years) children of the same local community. The mothers were interviewed about the nature of perceived wrongdoings, emotional, social and cognitive concomitants of forgiveness of their children. The contents of the interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim followed by their analysis by the Thematic Analysis Method. The findings showed that the children’s transgression related to their immediate and tangible realities of life. The significant others played a facilitative role in their learning phase of forgiveness. The children easily accepted their wrongdoings. Some personality attributes regulated the understanding of their wrongdoings. Moreover, children’s forgiveness was more explicit and, thus, easy to understand spontaneously. The understanding and acceptance of wrongdoings of the children were generally guided by their preferences, relationships, moods and concreteness. In essence, the children’s forgiveness evinced close links with their social, emotional and interpersonal developments. The findings have been discussed considering the current empirical findings pertaining to the children’s forgiveness and some cultural concerns. The implications and directions for future research have been discussed along with some limitations.

Abstract Background: Due to the common instability caused by political and security issues, Lebanese hospitals have experienced acts of terrorism multiple times. The most recent Beirut Explosion even forced several hospitals to cease operations for the first time in decades—but studies show the preparedness levels for such attacks in similar countries are low. Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the experience of Lebanese hospitals with terrorist attacks. Methods: This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders to assess their experience with terrorist bombings. Data was analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Results: The researchers found that Lebanese hospitals vary greatly in their structures and procedures. Those differences are a function of 3 contextual factors: location, culture, and accreditation status. Hospitals found near ‘dangerous zones’ were more likely to be aware and to have better response to such events. A severe lack of communication, unity of command, and collaboration between stakeholders has made the process fragmented. Conclusion: The researchers recommend a larger role for the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) in this process, and the creation of a platform where Lebanese organizations can share their experiences to improve preparedness and resilience of the Lebanese healthcare system in the face of terrorism.

Women remain underrepresented in the coaching domain across various levels of sport both in Canada and internationally. Despite the use of mentorship as a key strategy to support female coaches, little progress has been seen in achieving parity. At the same time, greater advances in gender equity have occurred in other non-sport sectors such as business, engineering, and medicine. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to learn from non-sport domains that have seen advances in gender equity to inform mentorship for women in coaching. A mixed-methods methodology was employed and consisted of distributing mentorship surveys to female coaches (n = 310) at various competitive levels, representing current (88%), former (12%), full-time (26%), part-time (74%), paid (54%), and unpaid (46%) coaching status. In addition, eight in-depth semi-structured interviews were also conducted with women in senior-level positions across various non-sport domains, including business (n = 1), media (n = 1), engineering (n = 2), higher education (n = 1), law (n = 1), and medicine (n = 2), regarding the role of mentorship in advancing women in their field. A descriptive and thematic analysis of the survey and interview data were conducted and findings are interpreted to suggest considerable variation in the characteristics of female coaches’ mentoring relationships, as well as the need to move beyond mentorship to sponsorship for advancing women in coaching. Recommendations for future research and advancing women in coaching are provided.

Abstract This qualitative study explores the meaning-making process of veterans to address the positive aspects of military service in international operations. Thirteen veterans from a Force Protection Unit in Norway were interviewed about their deployment to Afghanistan. A thematic analysis revealed three main themes reflecting meaningful aspects of the service. “Confirmation of ability” refers to finding meaning by coping with stressful situations and being recognized for it. “Cohesion of peers” refers to finding meaning by belonging to a team and giving mutual support within the team, such as backing up each other and caring. “Significance of effort” refers to finding meaning by seeing their efforts as a contribution, as well as by receiving recognition and gaining status for their efforts. The analysis also revealed accompanying themes of inconsistencies, which in turn activated different coping strategies. The findings have been substantiated through a functional exposition of meaning: purpose, value, efficacy, and self-worth, as advocated by Baumeister (1991), and are discussed in the context of previous research and a theoretical concept of meaning making. Steps for future research are proposed.

Excessive online stock trading appears to share similarities with gambling disorder. However, using gambling disorder criteria to assess excessive trading may not allow a full understanding of this phenomenon as specific aspects of the trading context that differ from gambling may be overlooked. This study explores the manifestations and consequences of excessive trading and its links with gambling disorder via the perceptions of online stock traders themselves. Data for thematic analysis were collected from a sample of online stock traders (N = 13) divided into two focus groups based on trading frequency (i.e., on a regular or occasional basis). Perceived manifestations of excessive trading included excessive preoccupation and frequent behaviors, and consequences that affect finances, relationships, work and health. Perceived links between gambling disorder and excessive trading concerned a shared incapacity to control behaviors, and chasing losses. Though excessive trading and gambling disorder are similar on many grounds, the assessment of trading behaviors should consider specific aspects such as the context within which they occur (e.g., state of the market). Implications for future research on excessive trading behaviors are discussed.

Mining communities throughout the Southern African Development Community are faced with numerous challenges impacting on their wellbeing. As part of an integrative multidisciplinary research project, this study sought to explore aspects that affect community wellbeing in the informal Bekkersdal mining community in South Africa from the perspective of local community caregivers. An explorative-descriptive qualitative study including 22 mainly female (91%) participants who were purposively sampled was conducted. As part of data collection, participants answered a series of open-ended questions in a questionnaire and kept journals. Thematic analysis was used to analyze that data. The results indicate aspects that either promote (contribute to) or hinder community wellbeing.

Abstract Background Almost a third (n=41,000) of all Irish farm holders are aged 65 years or older. Older farmers are vulnerable to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) both by virtue of the nature of their work and their age. MSD’s are a known risk factor for workplace accidents and farming is the highest risk occupation in Ireland. This study aimed to explore older farmers’ experiences of living with and accessing healthcare for MSD’s. Methods A qualitative study design employing semi-structured interviews was employed. Nine Irish farmers aged 65 years and over with current or previous experience of MSD's were recruited. All participants continued to farm on either a full-time or part-time basis. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Four themes describing older farmers' experiences of MSD’s and healthcare were identified; (1) acceptance of MSD’s as inevitable (2) biomechanical and biological beliefs about MSD’s (3) resilience and a commitment to continuing work in response to MSD’s (4) scepticism and avoidance of healthcare. Conclusion To the best of our knowledge this is the first qualitative study of older Irish farmers’ experiences of MSD’s. Findings reveal that older farmer’s experiences differ significantly from those reported by other occupational groups. Commitment to continue working permeated the findings of this study and shaped older farmers' experiences and responses to MSD's. Older farmers accept MSD’s and pain as inevitable consequences of farming, and they respond to MSD’s with stoicism. Lack of healthcare provider knowledge about farming culture and practices contributes to older farmers' negative healthcare experiences and avoidance of healthcare. Given the prevalence of MSD’s in this population future research should focus on developing and evaluating appropriate health promoting and patient-centered interventions to support continued safe farming for older Irish farmers.

Key populations are at the highest risk of acquiring and transmitting the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV). Due to the stigma vested upon them, they have become least accessible for preventive and curative services for HIV. Therefore, coping strategies are essential to minimize stigma to end AIDS by 2025, five years ahead of the global target of ending AIDS in 2030. The objective was to describe the coping strategies adopted by key-populations to overcome behavior-related stigma. Data from thirty-two in-depth interviews were analyzed using the thematic analysis method.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the challenges faced by caregivers regarding the stimulation of the development of children with congenital Zika syndrome at home. Method: A qualitative study was carried out with ten caregivers of children with the syndrome and five health professionals who work in a specialized service of reference for children/adolescents with disabilities in a city in Pernambuco, Brazil. Data collection took place between November 2018 and March 2019 through a semi-structured interview, and the data were interpreted using thematic analysis. Results: The challenges faced by caregivers are permeated by fear, insecurity and lack of support for the realization of the stimulatory activities at home. Practitioners acknowledge the situation but emphasize the importance of continuing the stimulatory activities to preserve the capabilities of these children. Conclusions: It is necessary to sensitize health teams to support families regarding the challenges faced and provide full time care for the child with Zika syndrome in order to achieve maximum development.

Religious affiliation is an important identifying characteristic for many individuals and relates to numerous life outcomes including health, well-being, policy positions, and cognitive style. Using methods from computational linguistics, we examined language from 12,815 Facebook users in the United States and United Kingdom who indicated their religious affiliation. Religious individuals used more positive emotion words ( β = .278, p < .0001) and social themes such as family ( β = .242, p < .0001), while nonreligious people expressed more negative emotions like anger ( β = −.427, p < .0001) and categories related to cognitive processes, like tentativeness ( β = −.153, p < .0001). Nonreligious individuals also used more themes related to the body ( β = −.265, p < .0001) and death ( β = −.247, p < .0001). The findings offer directions for future research on religious affiliation, specifically in terms of social, emotional, and cognitive differences.
