The objective of this research is to clarify the mechanism for virus removal in an activated sludge process. The roles of microbes, i.e. bacteria, protozoa and metazoa, which form activated sludge were investigated using poliovirus as a model virus. In a bacteria cultures, the virus concentration decreased in the first one hour after which no further decrease was observed. This phenomenon is explained by the interaction of bacterial floc and virus where virus was removed by reversible adsorption. On the other hand, in the mixed culture of bacteria and protozoa, or of bacteria and metazoa, the virus removal process was observed to proceed in two first-order processes. In the first stage, virus was removed from the liquid phase by adsorption onto the floc, whereas in the second stage, virus is removed by predation of the other microbes, i.e. protozoa or metazoa. Moreover, the floc-forming ability and the feeding manner of the microbes strongly affected the virus removal. Especially, a filter feeder microbe was more effective in virus removal than a detritus feeder microbe. Among the microbes used in the experiments, P. erythrophthalma which had a large mouth and a strong filter-feeding ability as well as a high floc-forming ability showed the most efficient virus removal.

A large portion of organic matter in primary effluent is polymers such as proteins and polysaccharides, and heterotrophic bacteria can directly take up only monomers such as amino acids and glucose that are produced from polymers by hydrolysis. Therefore it is assumed that the hydrolysis of polymers to monomers is the rate-determining step in activated sludge process. Activated sludges were acclimated to dextrin or peptone, and polymers (dextrin or peptone) and monomers (glucose or a mixture of free amino acids) were used as substrates for kinetics tests. Monomers were removed linearly, and the removal of polymers followed pseudo first order kinetics on the other hand. The removal rate of monomers was higher than that of polymers. The only one difference between polymer and monomer is whether glycosidic or peptide bond exists in molecule or not. It was, therefore, verified that the hydrolysis of polymer to monomer was the rate-determining step in activated sludge process. The removal of polymers followed apparently first order kinetics at higher F/M ratios, but followed nth (n>l) order kinetics at lower F/M ratios.

The dissolved oxygen (DO) probe is repeatedly subjected to a step change of the oxygen concentration with a time interval of 15-30 s. For this purpose an existing measuring technique was used in which the activated sludge was sampled continuously from the aeration tank. At each step the time constant of the probe response is estimated which provides a continuous diagnosis of the probe condition. Therefore the DO concentration measurements along the response are fitted to a first order response model of the probe. It was shown that the probe response time constant is a useful indicator for fouling of the probe membrane.

Generally, wastewater of nata de coco industry contains suspended solids and COD were high, ranging from 90,000 mg / l. The high level of of the wastewater pollutants, resulting in nata de coco industry can not be directly disposed of its wastewater into the environment agency. Appropriate technology required in order to process the waste water so that the treated water can meet the environmental quality standards that are allowed. Designing the waste water treatment plant that is suitable and efficient for treating industrial wastewater nata de coco is the activated sludge process. Hybrid Activated Sludge Process (HASP) with IMET was developed and applied to an activated sludge process for the advanced nutrient treatment in Korea. The characteristics of nitrogen removal from the HASP were investigated through a kinetic study by batch-type experiment. Online DB analysis produced from the IMET was conducted for the nutrient removal performance in the field demonstration plant treating 10,000 m3/day in G city of Korea. In this paper, we aimed to determine the effect of increasing NHM4+-N load on the specific nitrification rate (SNR) and the specific denitrification rate (SDNR) through a batch-type experiment, and to estimate the net reaction time for the phase-transfer rate using online DB analysis in the HASP operation. Experimental results include: (1) both the nitrification and denitrification followed first-order kinetics; (2) the maximum SNR and SDNR were 4.0301 mgN/gVSS·hr and 2.785 mgN/gVSS·hr, respectively; (3) comparison of reaction rates between nitrification and denitrification from the non-linear regression analysis found that nitrification rate was higher than denitrification.

Abstract Aerobic sludge from a municipal activated sludge treatment plant, sludge from a conventional municipal anaerobic digester, aerobic sludge from an activated sludge process of a petroleum refinery, and granular sludge from an upflow sludge blanket reactor (USBR) were tested in the deemulsification of a water-in-oil emulsion. All sludges except the last one, showed a good deemulsification capability and could he used for a partial deemulsification of such emulsions. The rate and degree of the deemulsifications increased with an increase in sludge concentrations. The deemulsifications were faster at 85°C and required smaller amounts of sludge than in the case of the deemulsifications at room temperature. An extended stirring (up to a certain limit) in the course of the dispersion of sludge emulsion helped the deemulsification. Too vigorous agitation had an adverse effect. The deemulsification effect of sludge became less visible with an increase in the dilution of emulsion which caused an increase in its spontaneous deemulsification.

Many of Egypt's cities have existing treatment plants under operation that have been constructed before 1970. Almost all of these treatment plants now need rehabilitation and upgrading to extend their services for a longer period. One of these plants is the Beni Suef City Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Beni Suef WWTP was constructed in 1956. It has primary treatment followed by secondary treatment employing intermediate rate trickling filters. The BOD, COD, and SS concentration levels are relatively high. They are approximately 800, 1100, and 600 mg/litre, respectively. The Beni Suef city required the determination of the level of work needed for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the existing 200 l/s plant and to extend its capacity to 440 l/s at year 2000 A description of the existing units, their deficiencies and operation problems, and the required rehabilitation are presented and discussed in this paper. Major problems facing the upgrading were the lack of space for expansion and the shortage of funds. It was, therefore, necessary to study several alternative solutions and methods of treatment. The choice of alternatives was from one of the following schemes: a) changing the filter medium, its mode of operation and increasing the number of units, b) changing the trickling filter to high rate and combining it with the activated sludge process, for operation by one of several possible combinations such as: trickling filter-solids contact, roughing filter-activated sludge, and trickling filter-activated sludge process, c) dividing the flow into two parts, the first part to be treated using the existing system and the second part to be treated by activated sludge process, and d) expanding the existing system by increasing the numbers of the different process units. The selection of the alternative was based on technical, operational and economic evaluations. The different alternatives were compared on the basis of system costs, shock load handling, treatment plant operation and predicted effluent quality. The flow schemes for the alternatives are presented. The methodology of selecting the best alternative is discussed. From the study it was concluded that the first alternative is the most reliable from the point of view of costs, handling shock load, and operation.
