An Elective in Mathematics
Keyword(s):
The use of the abacus, slide rule, Napier's “bones,” and other devices as demonstration aids in the teaching of junior high school mathematics has one drawback: the kids love it! And so they encourage the teacher (would pester be a better word?) to “teach me how to use it.” With the crammed-full curriculum that must be conquered in nine short months, there are not enough spare hours to devote to the time-consuming task of teaching computation on the abacus or slide rule or to fully satisfy students in some of the other interests they express.
