The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a national organization of mathematics teachers in elementary and secondary schools. Its purpose is the promotion and stimulation of better teaching of mathematics. The National Council operates chiefly through three divisions of its organization; namely, The Mathematics Teacher, The Year Book, and the annual meeting of its members and board of directors.

These lines arc written just after the page proof for the official program of the Thirty-First Annual Meeting of The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, held last month in Atlantic City, was returned to the printer. The members of our largest Affiliated Group, the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey, and the officers of the National Council worked hard to make the 1953 annual meeting the “biggest and best”, and more importantly, a meeting of great value to those who attended and to our cause which is that of the improvement of mathematics education at all levels of instruction. Reports on the annual meeting will appear in fall numbers of The Mathematics Teacher.

The Committee's report was approved by the Board of Directors at its August, 1965, meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. Biographical material and photographs of these nominees will be published in the January, 1966, issues of The Arithmetic Teacher and The Mathematics Teacher.

The United States Office of Education has received urgent and repeated requests from individuals and organizations throughout the country to give the secondary schools detailed suggestions for the teaching of mathematics for pre-induction purposes. In December 1942, the Office in cooperation with the President of The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics appointed a committee to make a survey of the mathematical needs of the armed forces and upon this basis to make a report concerning what the schools can do for the emergency. The committee consisted of Virgil S. Mallory, Professor of Mathematics, New Jersey State Teachers College at Montclair; William D. Reeve, Professor of Mathematics, Teachers College, Columbia University; Giles M. Ruch, Chief, Research and Statistical Service, U. S. Office of Education; Raleigh Schorling, Professor of Education, University of Michigan; and Rolland It. Smith, Specialist in Mathematics for the Public Schools of Springfield, Massachusetts, and President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Dr. Smith served as chairman of the Committee.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics needs the individual support of two groups of teachers of mathematics who are not members. The first group consists of those teachers who, according to their own testimony, have never heard of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics or The Mathematics Teacher, to say nothing of the yearbooks published annually by the Council. If anyone doubts that the situation is serious, let him travel about the country and talk to groups of teachers. It will soon be obvious that some vigorous missionary work needs to be done. Surely no meeting of mathematics teachers of any importance should be held anywhere without someone's giving at least a short description of the work that the Council is trying to do and what a teacher needs to do to become a member of the organization. If reports that come to the office of The Mathematics Teacher are true, many meetings of mathematics teachers are held and not one word is said about the magazine or the yearbooks, and no one is urged to join the Council. The office of The Mathematics Teacher will gladly send subscription blanks describing the work of the Council to anyone who is interested enough in the work we are trying to do to write us about them.

Professor Herbert Ellsworth Slaught, honorary president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, passed away on May 21, 1937, at his home in Chicago in his seventy-sixth year. Professor Slaught's death removes from the scene of action one of the most devoted servants of the cause of mathematics in this country. For many years he was active not only in the affairs of the National Council, but also in those of the Mathematical Association of America, The American Mathematical Society, the Central Association of Science and Mathematics Teachers and several local organizations. He was a leader in the best sense. He was interested not only in promulgating and encouraging research activities, but was also active in stimulating others to study and improve the teaching of mathematics in secondary schools. He was instrumental in founding the Mathematical Association of America in 1916, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in 1920. His death is a distinct loss to all the mathematical organizations that he served so long and so well.

As secretary of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, I officially announce the annual election of certain officers of the National Council, said election to take place at Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Friday, February 22, 1935. Article III Section 7, of the by-laws states: “At least two months before the date of the annual meeting, all members shall be given the opportunity through announcement in the official journal to suggest by mail for the guidance of the directors a candidate for each elective office for the ensuing year. At least one month before the annual meeting the secretary of the board of directors shall send to each member an official ballot giving the names of two candidates for each office to be filled. These candidates shall be selected by a nominating committee of the board of which the secretary shall be chairman. The election shall be by mail or in person and shall close on the date of the annual meeting.”

The next annual meeting of the National Council will be held at the Coronado Hotel, St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 31–Jan. 1, 1935–6. The explanation of the unusual date is that after the Council voted in February to hold a program meeting in St. Louis during the holidays in connection with the American Association for the Advancement of Science the N.E.A. selected St. Louis as the place of its February meeting for 1936. The Board of Directors, after due consideration, decided it would be unwise to hold two meetings in the same locality only seven weeks apart and voted to abandon plans for the usual February meeting and hold the regular annual meeting on the dates just mentioned. It is hoped that a greater number of high school teachers will be able to attend the meeting during the vacation period than would be possible in February.

There are Some things concerning the National Council that are especially obvious and that a great many people know about, such as the annual meeting and The Mathematics Teacher. There are some other types of the Council's activities that also deserve mention and about which I think you will be glad to hear.
