Through this district there is little criticism of mathematics teaching. The requirements in school and college have not been changed to any appreciable extent. The question as to the relative number of pupils taking high-school mathematics seemed hard to answer definitely. The following table, however, gives the number of pupils per thousand of enrollment who presented answer papers to the regents in the years shown.

Gardiner (Oxford: Oxford Science Publications, 1987). Problems 19 and 20 were provided by Robert H. Becker, 526 Harding Ave., Schillington, PA 19607-2802. Problems 17, 23, and 24 appear in the Second Book of Mathematical Bafflers, edited by Angela Fox Dunn (New York: Dover Publications, 1983). Problems 18, 21, 22, and 25 were adapted from Cariboo College High School Mathematics Contest Problems 1973–1992, edited by Jim Totten (Kamloops, B.C.: Cariboo College, 1992). Problems 26–29 were submitted by Barry Scully, York Region Board of Education, Aurora, ON L4G 3H2. Problem 31 was adapted from The Mathematical Funfair by Brian Bolt (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1989).

At Teachers College, Columbia University, from July 7th to August 14th, in addition to the major course on the teaching and supervision of mathematics and one on the teaching of algebra given by Professor Reeve, the following courses will be offered. By Miss Sutherland: Teaching arithmetic in primary grades, teaching arithmetic in intermediate grades, and professionalized subject matter in junior high school mathematics. By Professor Shuster: Modern business arithmetic and field work in mathematics. By Dr. Sanford: Teaching algebra in junior high schools, and the history of mathematics. By Mr. Smith: Teaching geometry in secondary schools and a demonstration class in plane geometry. By Dr. Swenson: Professionalized subject matter in senior high school mathematics, and a demonstration class in eleventh year mathematics. By Dr. Wolff, visiting professor from Germany: Teaching mathematics in the secondary schools of Germany and the correlation of secondary school mathematics with science and art.
