A new type of HFRP hybrid bars (hybrid fiber reinforced polymer) was introduced to increase the rigidity of FRP reinforcement, which was a basic drawback of the FRP bars used so far. Compared to the BFRP (basalt fiber reinforced polymer) bars, modification has been introduced in HFRP bars consisting of swapping basalt fibers with carbon fibers. One of the most important mechanical properties of FRP bars is compressive strength, which determines the scope of reinforcement in compressed reinforced concrete elements (e.g., column). The compression properties of FRP bars are currently ignored in the standards (ACI, CSA). The article presents compression properties for HFRP bars based on the developed compression test method. Thirty HFRP bars were tested for comparison with previously tested BFRP bars. All bars had a nominal diameter of 8 mm and their nonanchored (free) length varied from 50 to 220 mm. Test results showed that the ultimate compressive strength of nonbuckled HFRP bars as a result of axial compression is about 46% of the ultimate strength. In addition, the modulus of elasticity under compression does not change significantly compared to the modulus of elasticity under tension. A linear correlation of buckling load strength was proposed depending on the free length of HFRP bars.

Based on experimental results, mathematical models were elaborated to predict the development of compressive strength of concrete with fly ash replacement percentages up to 30 %. Strength of concrete with different types of cement (CEM I 42.5, CEM I 32.5, CEM III 32.5), after 2, 28, 90, 180 days of curing, have been analysed to evaluate the effect of addition content, the time of curing and the type of cement on the compressive strength changes. The adequacy of equations obtained was verified using statistical methods. The test results of selected properties of binders and hardened concrete with fly ash are also included. The analysis showed that concrete with fly ash is characterised by advantageous applicable qualities.

ABSTRACT The method of the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete slabs using the externally bonded FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) laminates has become popular because of their advantages as high tensile strength, large modulus of elasticity, lightweight, high abrasion resistance, electrical insulation, good heat resistance and durable over the time. The paper presented the design procedure for the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete slabs with FRP laminates to ensure the mining requirements and investigation of the reinforcement efficiency corresponding to the compressive strength levels of concrete based on ACI 440.2R-17. Calculation results in the suggested sequence helped select and check the required reinforcement FRP areas. In addition, the calculation results showed that the degree of increased flexural strengthening of the slabs was proportional to the compressive strength of the concrete, corresponding to the concrete strength increased from 11,5 MPa to 19,5 MPa, flexural strengthening increases from 91% to 144%. Moreover, the damage to the reinforced concrete slabs was caused by the debonding between the FRP and the surface of the structures.

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is an important material used for strengthening and retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures. Commonly used fibers are glass, carbon, and aramid fibers. The durability of structures can be extended by selecting an appropriate method of strengthening. FRP wrapping is one of the easiest methods for repair, retrofit, and maintenance of structural elements. Deterioration of structures may be due to moisture content, salt water, or contact with alkali solutions. Using FRP, additional strength can be gained by structural elements. This paper investigates the durability of aramid-fiber-wrapped concrete cube specimens subjected to acid attack and temperature rise. The study focuses on the durability of aramid-fiber-wrapped concrete by considering the compressive strength parameter of the concrete cube. Concrete cubes are prepared as specimens with a double wrapping of aramid fibers. Diluted hydrochloric acid solution is used for immersion of specimens for curing periods of 7, 30, and 70 days. The aramid-fiber wrapping reduces weight loss by 40% and improves compressive strength by 140%. In a fire resistance test, the specimens were kept in a hot air oven at a temperature of 200 °C at different time intervals. Even after fire attack, weight loss in specimens reduced by 60%, with about 150% enhancement in compressive strength due to aramid fiber.

An ecofriendly fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) had been used in the last decade to enhance the short concrete column’s strength and deformation capacity. This study involves the wrapping of FRP sheets with a thickness of 3 mm and 5 mm on a short column, and then the compressive strength is determined. The rectangular columns of size 150 mm × 300 mm are used for this study, and cast under the grades of M20 and M40 are wrapped with GFRP sheets at the thickness of 3 mm and 5 mm. These results are clarified at a specific thickness of the FRP-wrapped columns. It provides a maximum axial compressive strength, and Young’s modulus gets enhanced rigorously when it is to be compared to the normal concrete. This thesis deals with experimental studies of different parameters associated with wrapped glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP). In M20 grade, when the 3 mm wrapped specimen and the 5 mm wrapped specimen are compared, the specimen wrapped with 5 mm increases 5.182% more than the specimen wrapped with 3 mm. In M40 grade, when the 0 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm wrapped specimens are compared, the specimen wrapped with 5 mm increases 2.47% more than the specimen wrapped with 0 mm. The 5 mm wrapping attains the maximum strength.

Recently, there has been a tendency to use machine learning (ML)–based methods, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs), for more accurate estimates. This paper investigates the effectiveness of three different machine learning methods including radial basis function neural network (RBNN), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), and support vector regression (SVR), for predicting the ultimate strength of square and rectangular columns confined by various FRP sheets. So far, in the previous study, several experiments have been conducted on concrete columns confined by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets with the results suggesting that the use of FRP sheets enhances the compressive strength of concrete columns effectively. Also, a wide range of experimental data (including 463 specimens) has been collected in this study for square and rectangular columns, confined by various FRP sheets. The comparison of ML-derived results with the experimental findings, which were in a very good agreement, demonstrated the ability of ML to estimate the compressive strength of concrete confined by FRP; the correlation coefficient (R2) for MLP, RBFNN, and SVR methods was equal to 0.97, 0.97, and 0.90, respectively. Similar accuracy was obtained by MLP and RBFNN, and they provided better estimates for determining the compressive strength of concrete confined by FRP. Also, the results showed that the difference between statistical indicators for training and testing specimens in the RBFNN method was greater than the MLP method, and this difference indicated the poor performance of RBFNN.

In this article, the response of nine plain concrete panels to an impact of hard projectiles was examined in an experimental study. The tests were planned with an aim to observe the influence of compressive strength on the performance of concrete under impact loading. Concrete panels with compressive strengths within the range of 26 to 92 MPa subjected to impact by 23 mm hard projectile at velocities within the range of 270 to 348 m/s were studied. Also, using a glass fiber reinforced polymer sheet, as a liner on the rear face of the plain concrete panel, to strengthen the panel was examined. The experimental results indicate that strengthening concrete panel with a rear glass fiber reinforced polymer sheet showed more satisfactory performance under the impact load than increasing compressive strength of concrete. Also, the use of glass fiber reinforced polymer sheets as rear liners in addition to increasing the concrete strength showed superior performance of concrete panels against impact; it is recommended to be used in protective structures.
