Contemporary business environment imposes new business rules. The maximization of profit and shareholder value cannot be the only aim of an enterprise. Instead, enterprises are forced to maximize value of all stakeholders in order to survive in the long run. The issue of sustainability has become of crucial significance, and especially measurement and reporting on sustainability, as well as, its effects on financial performances, as still dominant ones in the contemporary business performance measurement models. Hence, the subject of the research is the enterprise sustainability in the contemporary business environment. The aim of the research is to stress the role and the significance of the sustainability in the process of improving the enterprise efficiency. The research results show that the enterprise sustainability has the positive implications on the business performances in the long run, as well as on the welfare of all stakeholders. In order to be more transparent, it is desirable for enterprises to create the sustainability report, in the integration with the traditional business report, which would give the complete overview of enterprise efficiency.

E-commerce has become a key aspect of the global business environment, causing fundamental changes in markets and organisational structures. This chapter considers how knowledge management, the latest management approach aimed at improving business performance, can create new business opportunities in the new business environment that is defined by electronic commerce. Knowledge management deals with the systematic generation, codification and transfer of knowledge and can be supported by a number of technologies, known as knowledge management tools. It has been argued that intelligent systems can offer additional capabilities and advantages in comparison with more traditional information technologies. This chapter investigates the potential of intelligent agent-based software for more effective knowledge management in the context of e-commerce, adopting the perspective of an SME involved in development of intelligent agents-based knowledge management software. The chapter concludes with a research agenda for knowledge management research in e-commerce.

This paper aims to describe the concept of applying Artificial Intelligence to IT Operations (AIOps) and its main components, Big Data, Machine Learning and Trend Analysis. The concept was implemented by developing a multi-layered fusion of the technologies that powers the components in AIOps platforms present on the IT market. The core of an AIOps platform is represented by the Big Data organization structure and by a massive parallel data processing platform like Apache Hadoop. The ML component of the platform is able to infer the future behaviour and the regular operations that are performed from the large volume of collected data, in order to develop the ability to automate the activities. AIOps platforms find their place especially in very complex IT infrastructures, ones that require constant monitoring and quick decisions in case of failures. The case study is based on the Moogsoft AIOps platform, and its features are presented in detail, using the Cloud trial version, clearly showing the potential of such an advanced tool for infrastructure monitoring and reporting. The experiment was focused on the way Moogsoft is monitoring computing resources,    is handling events and records alerts for the defined timespan, alerts grouped by category (like web services, social media, networking). The platform is also able to display at any given moment the unresolved situations and their type of origin, and includes automated remediation tools. The study presents the features of this software category, consisting in benefits for the business environment and their integration into the Internet-of-Things model. Based on the information and communication technology revolution are characterized by Internet usage in various fields, the business environment also does changing by applying the concept of Electronic Commerce (e-commerce) on its process. Like business activities in general, e-commerce also requires the involvement of various parties, which are referred to Supply Chain Management (SCM). The challenge is while the Supply Chain (SC) performance measurement, that generally conducted in the company with non e-commerce, applied on ecommerce business process. Otherwise, only a few literature studies discuss partially dimension of performance measurement in e-commerce. Therefore, it is important to conduct a literature study about key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring SC performance in e-commerce dimensions, and it would be explained in this paper. The contribution of this paper proposed the KPIs' that could be used for measuring SC performance in an e-commerce business process in order to be a new approach on the development of SC performance measurement models.

Purpose This study aims to empirically investigate the potential impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on US textile and apparel manufacturing. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) computable general equilibrium model based on the latest GTAP9 database. Findings The findings of the study suggest that: the “yarn-forward” rule will not work effectively in the context of TPP; and the development of Vietnam’s local textile industry is a critical threat to the survival of US textile and apparel (T&A) manufacturing in the long run. Originality/value The findings of the study augment the understanding of the T&A-specific sectoral impact of TPP and address the particular concerns of the US T&A manufacturers with regard to the new business environment and the possible scenarios after the implementation of the agreement.

Most Japanese enterprises are confronted with a rapid decline of business performance due to the long time recession of the Japanese economy. They gradually lost their competitive advantages in global marketplaces especially in the business domains of matured products including PCs. Most of them are forced to take prompt measures to respond to their business environment. For the past few years, we have been conducting questionnaire surveys repeatedly about B2B information systems in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The results of these surveys show clearly that their business performances have no clear relevance to the utilization B2B informatior systems. In conclusion, from a management strategy point of view, Japanese SMEs are classified into the following four types: (a) a group of high technical skills in special fields irrelevant to the utilization of information systems, (b) a new business model oriented group, (c) a manpower cost reduction oriented group, and (d) a foreign manufacturing subsidiary group. In the near future, these groups seem to polarize into group (a) and group (d).

The success of SMEs hinges on the character display by the entrepreneurs in a competitive business environment. Many SMEs have failed as a result of entrepreneur’s lackadaisical display in controlling and coordinating the business. This study examined the effects of entrepreneurs’ character on SMEs performance in Lagos State. This study used survey research designed via administering questionnaires to the entrepreneurs’ of SMEs in Lagos State. 260questionnaires were administered to the respondents and 231 were retrieved. Regression method of analysis was employed to test the stated hypotheses and the findings revealed that risk taking has a weak positive effect on profitability but competitive aggressiveness and innovativeness have a strong positive effect on sales growth of SMEs in Lagos State. The study recommended that entrepreneurs’ operating in Lagos State need to be very mindful of the risk they take in order to improve their business performance in terms sales growth and profitability. Entrepreneurs need to develop new business ideas to enhance innovativeness and creativity so as to achieve increase in both financial and non-financial performance.

Purpose This study aims to review and try to understand the importance of complexity management for maritime business to gain competitiveness in global business environment. The purpose of the study is to discuss and evaluate managing change and requirements of understanding the complexity management. Design/methodology/approach To find peer-reviewed journal publications, a large scientific database used by searching Web of Science and Scopus as the most relevant abstract and citation databases that provide peer-reviewed literature data for many different academic disciplines and selected papers evaluated from the maritime business context. Findings As a conceptual paper, the contribution of the study is to offer practical/required management applications with the help of six proposes for making better management decisions to confront future challenges to catch organizational competitiveness and success. With adaptation of complexity management, maritime stakeholders able to create an important core competency. Research limitations/implications The research has some limitations and further research into this area should be extended. This study is designed as a first step to provide an insight to the field and to understand the main views of the subject. Subsequently, complexity management in maritime business is a slightly deficient area of research, which offers remarkable research opportunities. First, it would be fruitful to collect qualitative data to examine the current issues and changing business environment of the maritime business. Second, it would be helpful develop quantitative models to offer practical solutions from the maritime stakeholders’ point of view according to loading/discharging/transportation requirements. Future studies should deepen the subject with the help of simulation models of operations or agent based applications of stakeholder problems or vessel/ship-owner management implementations to understand changing circumstances of new business environment for the sake of managing complexity. Practical implications As the core point of view in strategic management; “achieving and sustaining” competitive advantage in organizations always takes an important place in organizational survival. With the help mentioned proposes stakeholders of the system could understand the ways of dealing with the complexities of new business world which enhances organizational competitiveness. Social implications Maritime business could be defined as a social ecosystem which has it is own dynamics and customs. Socio-eco systems, like all complex systems, show unique non-linear dynamics in space and time which could be tough to define via classical quantitative methods. Organizations co-exist and co-evolve with their environment. It is possible that organizations effect their environment and gain some control over it while at the same time affected from environment and should steer the new trends. Originality/value The originality of the study lies in highlighting the importance of change management as a handler of complexity management for maritime business. The contribution of the paper is to indicate expected opportunities and challenges of smart changes for relevant readiness of maritime business for better management decisions, benefiting maritime business stakeholders by simultaneously enhancing effectiveness to confront future demands to achieve organizational competitiveness. With the help of proper complexity management lenses organizations could able to create their source of competitive advantage that represents capacity to align and enable required functions under tough contextual environment.

Although there has been a degree of acceptance that information is a core business asset almost no research has been carried out into the factors that affect the way that information flows around the enterprise as employees at all levels seek to make use of it to complete tasks and make decisions. These decisions can have a significant impact on business performance and on the career development of employees. The challenge lies in finding ways to track the flow of information, especially where workarounds have been developed by employees to overcome their frustration with ‘approved’ processes. Over the last few years computational ethnography, initially applied to assessing issues relating to culture and communication. is becoming increasing widely used to track the flow of documents. In the wake of Covid19 organisations are going to have to operate in a rapidly changing business environment. Unless the flow of information is better understood short-term changes may be implemented which turn out to be of limited benefit or even undermine the rate of achievement of new business objectives.

The main goal of this article is to define the characteristics of and to evaluate the three selected models used to measure the performance of public administration bodies, with an emphasis placed on their application in different perspectives. The contemporary public administration institutions are obligated to increase their operating efficiency as well as the satisfaction of their stakeholders. This is precisely why they have been implementing diverse models, especially those already used for years in managing profit-oriented organisations. The models chosen for analysis are applied in public administration, making it possible to measure numerous indicators of both financial and nonfinancial nature. The research method adopted by the authors is a conceptual literature review performed using the resources of the Scopus, Springer, WoS, Emerald, and EBSCO databases. The items subject to analysis were the 3Es (i.e., economy, efficiency, effectiveness) and IOO (e.g., input, output, and outcome) models as well as the model included in the BSC (Balance Scorecard). The research has evidenced that each of the models has its strengths and limitations. The results thus obtained have led to a conclusion that the solution showing the highest potential in the area of the study is the performance measurement model proposed under the BSC; however, according to the authors, it still requires some fine-tuning to public administration’s operating conditions and organisational culture. The article also highlights the fundamental operationalisation problems related to the subject in question.
