Two distinct new species of the ant genus Crematogaster, C. khmerensis sp. nov. and C. pfeifferi sp. nov., are described from Cambodia and Malaysia, respectively. The two species are unique among Asian Crematogaster in that they have vertically directed propodeal spines, but their systematic positions have not been determined based on morphological characters alone. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of 89 Crematogaster taxon matrices previously published plus C. khmerensis sp. nov., using nuclear genes, reveals that C. khmerensis sp. nov. is nested within the Australo-Asian Crematogaster clade. Morphological assignment of the developed pronotal shoulders implies a close relationship between C. khmerensis sp. nov. and the C. tetracantha-group. Based on molecular and morphological evidence, we erect a new species group, C. khmerensis-group, to contain C. khmerensis sp. nov. and C. pfeifferi sp. nov. Divergence time estimates using MCMCTree shows that the root node of the C. khmerensis sp. nov. terminal is estimated to be of middle Miocene age at 15 million years old. The position of the C. khmerensis-group well supports the Oriental- to Australian-region dispersal history that has been proposed for the Australo-Asian Crematogaster clade.

Abstract The eastern Palaearctic is a centre of diversity for freshwater cladocerans (Crustacea), but little is known about the evolution and taxonomy of this diversity. Daphnia curvirostris is a Holarctic species complex that has most of its diversity in the eastern Palaearctic. We examined the phylogeography, rates of evolution and taxonomic status for each clade of the D. curvirostris complex using morphological and genetic evidence from four genes. The cybertaxonomical and morphological evidence supported an eastern Palaearctic clade, with at least four species (described here as the Daphnia korovchinskyi sp. nov. group) having diagnostic morphological characters. We also detected convergent morphological characters in the D. curvirostris complex that provided information about species boundaries. Two of the new species (Daphnia koreana sp. nov. and Daphnia ishidai sp. nov.) are known from single ponds and are threatened by human activity. Divergence time estimates suggested an ancient origin (12–28 Mya) for the D. korovchinskyi group, but these estimates are complicated by the small number of calibration points.

A new species, Scrophularia jinii (Scrophulariaceae), from Central China is described and illustrated. This new species was formerly misidentified as S. fargesii, from which it differs in many morphological characters. Moreover, it is distinct with all known Scrophularia species in its unique deeply double serrate leaf margin with 3–7 big teeth on each side. Molecular phylogenetic analysis further supports its species delimitation and suggests a close relationship with several Japanese and North American species.

The Glaurocarini are a small Old World tribe of tachinids belonging to the subfamily Tachininae. Two genera are currently recognized, Glaurocara Thomson with 16 species and Semisuturia Malloch with eight species. In this study we describe Semisuturia moffattensis Inclán, O’Hara, Stireman & Cerretti sp. n. from Queensland and New South Wales and compare it with congeners as well as other glaurocarines. The new species is readily identifiable among world glaurocarines by having a row of setae on lower 2/3 of facial ridge. We further evaluate the monophyly of the Glaurocarini on the basis of morphological characters of both adult and larval stages. A molecular phylogenetic analysis also supports monophyly of the tribe but does not support a close relationship between Glaurocarini and Ormiini as has been suggested previously. Finally, we provide new morphological evidence from both adults and first instar larvae to support the monophyly of both Semisuturia and Glaurocara.

Three distinct and independent molecular-based species delimitation analyses were performed among the species and populations included within theAustraloherosautranigroup, based on sequences of the mitochondrial gene Cytochrome b: a tree-based method proposed by Wiens and Penkrot (WP), a Character-based DNA Barcoding (CBB) and coalescent species delimitation method termed the Bayesian Implementation of the Poisson tree processes (bPTP). The congruence of WP and CBB delimited 11 independent lineages (species), while the bPTP delimited just nine lineages. We did not favour any of the methods, and we considered the possibility of two slightly variant scenarios. A time-calibrated phylogenetic analysis is proposed based on the predominant congruence of the results of these three species delimitation methods herein applied. The monophyly of theA.autranispecies group was highly supported with maximum node support value and diagnosed by 11 nucleotide substitutions. The sister clade of theA.autranispecies group is the clade comprisingA.sp. Timbé do Sul andA.minuano. The phylogenetic analysis supports three main clades within theA.autranispecies group, supported by maximum node support value, with the Southern Mata Atlântica clade as the most basal clade. Divergence time estimates indicate that the diversification of theAustraloherosoriginated during the early Neogene, but only in the late Neogene did the processes of diversification in the southeast and north regions occur. Diversification within theAustraloherosautranispecies group occurred synchronically for the three main clades during the beginning of the Quaternary. It is demonstrated that molecular characters are valuable tools for species recognition, particularly in speciose groups with inconspicuous or difficult to record morphological characters. The resulting phylogeny of theAustraloherosautranigroup is highly compatible with the geological and biogeographic scenarios proposed for the Neogene and Quarternary shaping of the extant river basins of eastern Brazil. Despite the origin of theA.autranigroup being dated to the late Miocene, species level diversification occurred in the Pleistocene and was probably driven by headwater capture events and sea-level fluctuations.

Abstract Harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) are soil animals with extremely low dispersal abilities that experienced allopatric differentiation. To clarify the morphological and phylogenetic differentiation of the endemic harvestman Zepedanulus ishikawai (Suzuki, 1971) (Laniatores: Epedanidae) in the southern part of the Ryukyu Archipelago, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses and divergence time estimates based on CO1 and 16S rRNA sequences of mtDNA, the 28S rRNA sequence of nrDNA, and the external morphology. A phylogenetic tree based on mtDNA sequences indicated that individuals of Z. ishikawai were monophyletic and were divided into clade I and clade II. This was supported by the nrDNA phylogenetic tree. Although clades I and II were distributed sympatrically on all three islands examined (Ishigaki, Iriomote, and Yonaguni), heterogeneity could not be detected by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism of nrDNA, indicating that clades I and II do not have a history of hybridisation. Also, several morphological characters differed significantly between individuals of clade I and clade II. The longstanding isolation of the southern Ryukyus from the surrounding islands enabled estimation of the original morphological characters of both clades of Z. ishikawai.

The genus Sibogasyrinx has to date included only four species of rare deep-water Conoidea, each known from few specimens. In shell characters it strongly resembles three distantly-related genera, two of which, Comitas and Leucosyrinx, belong to a different family, the Pseudomelatomidae. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of a large amount of material of Conoidea has revealed the existence of much additional undescribed diversity within Sibogasyrinx from the central Indo-Pacific and temperate Northern Pacific. Based on partial sequences of the mitochondrial cox1 gene and morphological characters of 54 specimens, 10 species hypotheses are proposed, of which six are described as new species: S. subula sp. nov., S. lolae sp. nov., S. maximei sp. nov., S. clausura sp. nov., S. pagodiformis sp. nov. and S. elbakyanae Kantor, Puillandre & Bouchet sp. nov. One of the previously described species was absent in our material. Most of the new species are very similar and are compared to Leucosyrinx spp. Species of Sibogasyrinx are unique among Conoidea on account of the high intrageneric variability in radular morphology. Three distinct radula types are found within Sibogasyrinx, two of which are confined to highly supported subclades.

Paris lihengiana (Melanthiaceae), a new species from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on evidence from morphological characters and molecular phylogeny. It differs from other species of Paris in its pubescent stem, pedicel and abaxial leaf surface, as well as other characters. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of 33 taxa in Paris was conducted based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and six plastid markers. Paris lihengiana is supported as a new species by both morphological characters and molecular data.

Allium xinlongense from western Sichuan Province, China, is described as a new species. Its diagnostic morphological characters were confirmed to be valid by comparing them to those of related species, such as A. maowenense, A. chrysanthum, A. rude, A. xichuanense, A. chrysocephalum, and A. herderianum. Molecular phylogenetic analysis (combining ITS and rpL32-trnL markers) indicated that this new species is a member of Allium sect. Daghestanica. A comprehensive description of this new species is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

A new species, Amanita glarea, is described and illustrated from Pakistan. Molecular phylogenetic data derived from internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU) regions along with morphological characters make it distinct from other currently known Amanita species. Amanita glarea is characterized by a grayish brown, slightly umbonate, pileus having universal veil remnants and striate margins, a long ringless stipe with a saccate volva bearing yellowish brown patches on the verrucose surface, inamyloid globose to subglobose basidiospores, and a filamentous pileipellis with some inflated round to elongated cells. Phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal ITS and LSU nucleotide sequences resolve A. glarea with other taxa in Amanita section Vaginatae.
