The two books make a notable contribution in drawing together many of the philosophical problems about time, and the associated literature. The expositions are also valuable for their interdisciplinary strengths, especially in the history and philosophy of science and (to a lesser extent) in theology, and for the clarity and thoroughness of Craig's approach. However, the two books do not present, as might at first appear, a side by side exposition of the respective strengths and weaknesses of the A-series and the B-series views of time. They are, rather, one interconnected defence of the A-series view. Some of the strengths and weaknesses of Craig's exposition and defence of the A-series view are noted.

God is conceived in the Western theistic tradition to be both the Creator and Conservor of the universe. These two roles were typically classed as different aspects of creation, originating creation and continuing creation. On pain of incoherence, however, conservation needs to be distinguished from creation. Contrary to current analyses (such as Philip Quinn's), creation should be explicated in terms of God's bringing something into being, while conservation should be understood in terms of God's preservation of something over an interval of time. The crucial difference is that while conservation presupposes an object of the divine action, creation does not. Such a construal has significant implications for a tensed theory of time.

El principio fundamental de dicha teoría es que el uso de expresiones indicadoras temporales (en especial, "ahora") en oraciones expresadas en estilo directo puede representarse por medio del uso de expresiones cuasi-indicadores temporales (en especial, "en ese momento") en oraciones expresadas en estilo indirecto. Así, las oraciones del primer tipo podrían ser puestas siempre en equivalencia semántica con oraciones del segundo tipo.>br> El autor señala que, de acuerdo con la manera en que Castañeda define las nociones de "indicador" y de "cuasi-indicador", su teoría es incompatible con una teoría temporalizada (tensed) del tiempo. Esto es, su teoría (a) niega que un enunciado temporalizado (tensed) de manera lógicamente contingente como, por ejemplo, "Se avecina una tormenta ahora" adscriba una propiedad monádica de presente, pasado o futuro, y, por lo mismo, (b) implica que un enunciado de ese tipo puede ser expresado en términos de un enunciado intemporal (tenseless). Dado (a) y dado que las expresiones cuasi-indicadoras no denotan, según Castañeda, ninguna propiedad monádica de tiempo, el uso de expresiones indicadoras temporales podría representarse a través del uso de ciertas expresiones cuasi-indicadoras. A special kind of logic is needed to represent the valid kinds of arguments involving tensed sentences. The first significant presentation of a tense logic appeared in Prior (1957). Sentential tense logic, in its simplest form, adds to classical sentential logic two tense operators, P and F. The basic idea is to analyse past and future tenses in terms of prefixes ‘It was true that’ and ‘It will be true that’, attached to present-tensed sentences. (Present-tensed sentences do not need present tense operators, since ‘It is true that Jane is walking’ is equivalent to ‘Jane is walking’.) Translating the symbols into English is merely a preliminary to a semantics for tense logic; we may translate ‘P’ as ‘it was true that’ but we still have the question of the meaning of ‘it was true that’. There are at least two versions of the tensed theory of time – the minimalist version and the maximalist version – that can be used for the interpretation of the tense logic symbols. The minimalist version implies that there are no past or future particulars, and thus no things or events that have properties of pastness or futurity. What exists are the things, with their properties and relations, that can be mentioned in certain present-tensed sentences. If ‘Jane is walking’ is true, then there is a thing, Jane, which possesses the property of walking. ‘Socrates was discoursing’, even if true, does not contain a name that refers to a past thing, Socrates, since there are no past things. The ontological commitments of past and future tensed sentences are merely to propositions, which are sentence-like abstract objects that are the meanings or senses of sentences. ‘Socrates was discoursing’ merely commits us to the proposition expressed by the sentence ‘It was true that Socrates is discoursing’. The maximalist tensed theory of time, by contrast, implies that there are past, present and future things and events; that past items possess the property of pastness, present items possess the property of presentness, and future items possess the property of being future. ‘Socrates was discoursing’ involves a reference to a past thing, Socrates, and implies that the event of Socrates discoursing has the property of being past.
