Preliminary report on fish diversity at the Prince Gustav Channel, the northern part of the James Ross Island, Antarctica

Notothenioid fish were collected in the coastal part of the James Ross Island (Antarctica) mainly during Austral summer in 2012. In this paper, we report the list of species records and their basic biometric measurements as a reaction to missing ichthyofaunal investigation of this particular area. Collected fishes belong to the families Nototheniidae (Trematomus bernacchii Boulenger, 1902; T. eulepidotus Regan, 1914; T. newnesi Boulenger, 1902; Gobionotothen gibberifrons (Lönnberg, 1905); Notothenia coriiceps Richardson, 1844) and Bathydraconidae (Gymnodraco acuticeps Boulenger, 1902).

AbstractNew data on the infection with Acanthocephala of 33 fish caught in Admiralty Bay in November 2007 to January 2008 are given. These fish belong to 5 species: Notothenia rossii (22 immature specimens), Lindbergichthys nudifrons (n = 7), Trematomus bernacchii (n = 1), T. newnesi (n = 1) and Harpagifer antarcticus (n = 2). Three species of Echinorhynchida: Aspersentis megarhynchus, Metacanthocephalus dalmori and M. johnstoni and four species of Polymorphida: Corynosoma arctocephali, C. bullosum, C. hamanni and C. pseudohamanni, were found. Prevalence of N. rossii and L. nudifrons was 100%. The mean abundance of infection of N. rossii (125.09) was larger than that of Notothenia coriiceps (82.93). Data of infection of N. rossii in 2007 was almost identical with that in 1979 (mean abundance 118.66). The most abundant in this host were A. megarhynchus, M. johnstoni, C. hamanni and C. pseudohamanni (mean abundances 36.36, 29.77, 13.86 and 44.73, respectively). In total Echinorhynchida were more abundant than Polymorphida in 2007/08 (66.18 versus 58.91). Reverse situation was in 1979 (mean abundance 47.36 for Echinorhynchida and 71.3 for Polymorphida. Only 7 L. nudifrons were examined in 2007/08 and Echinorhynchida were more numerous in this host (mean abundance 26.71) than Polymorphida (10.29). Single specimens of other fish were infected with a few Acanthocephala belonging to species recorded in the same hosts with those found in 1978/79.

The family Channichthyidae or “icefishes” (suborder Notothenioidei) represents the only vertebrates lacking hemoglobin (Hb) as adults. Several icefish species also do not express cardiac myoglobin (Mb). We address how levels of proteins involved in iron (Fe) processing (transport, sequestration, and export) vary among white- and red-blooded notothenioids, and whether absence of Hb and/or Mb in channichthyids is accompanied by expansion of contents of Fe-binding proteins to protect against unchaperoned Fe. Levels of transferrin (Tf), ferritin (Ft), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and non-heme Fe were quantified in plasma, serum, and/or nonhematopoietic tissues (cardiac ventricle, skeletal muscle, and liver) from species of white-blooded ( Chaenocephalus aceratus, Champsocephalus gunnari, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, Pseudochaenichthys georgianus) (the first two species not expressing Mb) and red-blooded ( Notothenia coriiceps, Gobionotothen gibberifrons) notothenioids. We also measured levels of ascorbate (Asc), a mediator of Fe uptake. While plasma concentrations of Tf and tissue levels of Asc are similar among species, concentrations of plasma Asc are lower in white-blooded species. Concentrations of Ft and non-heme Fe and activities of Cp are also generally reduced in icefishes compared with red-blooded notothenioids. The presence of cardiac Mb in some icefish species does not appear to influence levels of proteins involved in Fe processing. To address further the question of Fe sequestration within a physiological context, we account for well-characterized differences in blood volume and heart mass among white- and red-blooded notothenioids. We report that total contents of plasma Tf are greater, while ventricle non-heme Fe is at least at parity in white- vs. red-blooded species.

Diatom taxa present in the inland streams and lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys and James Ross Island, Antarctica, are presented in this paper. A total of nine taxa are illustrated, with descriptions of four new species ( Luticola austroatlantica sp. nov., Luticola dolia sp. nov., Luticola laeta sp. nov., Muelleria supra sp. nov.). In the perennially ice-covered lakes of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, diatoms are confined to benthic mats within the photic zone. In streams, diatoms are attached to benthic surfaces and within the microbial mat matrix. One species, L. austroatlantica, is found on James Ross Island, of the southern Atlantic archipelago, and the McMurdo Dry Valleys. The McMurdo Dry Valley populations are at the lower range of the size spectrum for the species. Streams flow for 6–10 weeks during the austral summer, when temperatures and solar radiation allow glacial ice to melt. The diatom flora of the region is characterized by species assemblages favored under harsh conditions, with naviculoid taxa as the dominant group and several major diatom groups conspicuously absent.

Fish diets are important indicators of ecosystem change. This aspect of the ichthyofauna of the coast of the Argentine Islands has been insufficiently studied in comparison with other regions. This article presents the results of comparison of dietary and somatic parameters of the dominant species Notothenia coriiceps depending on the point, depth and season of catch. The sample was collected between February 2006 and February 2007. In the year of study, N. coriiceps, Trematomus bernacchii, Chaenocephalus aceratus (common species), Harpagifer antarcticus and Pagothenia borchgrevinki (rare species in this region) were caught. The average fish size in this region does not differ from other places in the Southern Ocean. In Cornice Channel and Stella Creek, N. coriiceps was smaller than at other points due to the narrowness and shallow depth of these places. In winter, large individuals apparently migrated from the coast. The diet of N. coriiceps consisted mainly of crustaceans and seaweeds, with a small number of mollusks (especially limpets), which are common. The number of fish in the diet of N. coriiceps is relatively low for this region. Access to food was relatively the same at different points and depths of the catch. The lowest amount of food was in the fall, the highest amount of food was in the spring and summer. The condition and hepatosomatic index also did not change depending on the point and depth of the catch, but they were low in spring and high in summer. Perhaps this is due to the low energy value of food, which is not compensated by the amount. It is necessary to conduct studies of the diet of N. coriiceps in other years to clarify the specificity of fish in the diet and phenological changes in somatic parameters. Similar studies are needed for other species in the region if catches are sufficient to collect a representative sample.
