Imbalance in the resident microbiota may promote the growth of opportunistic microorganisms, such as yeasts of Candida genus and the development of diseases, especially in aged people. This study evaluated whether the consumption of the probiotic Yakult LB® (Lactobacillus casei and Bifidobacterium breve) was able to influence on the specific immunological response against Candida and on the presence of these yeasts in the oral cavity of 42 healthy aged individuals. Saliva samples were collected before and after the probiotic use for 30 days, 3 times a week. The samples were plated in Dextrose Saboraud Agar with chloramphenicol, the colony-forming units (CFU/mL) were counted and the Candida species were identified. Anti-Candida IgA analysis was conducted using the ELISA technique. ANOVA and Student's t-test were used for normally distributed data and the Wilcoxon test was used for data with non-normal distribution (α=0.05). The results showed a statistically significant reduction (p<0.05) in Candida prevalence (from 92.9% to 85.7%), in CFU/mL counts of Candida and in the number of non-albicans species after consumption of the probiotic. Immunological analysis demonstrated a significant increase (p<0.05) in anti-Candida IgA levels. In conclusion, probiotic bacteria reduced Candida numbers in the oral cavity of the elderly and increased specific secretory immune response against these yeasts, suggesting its possible use in controlling oral candidosis.

The number of products containing probiotics, viable bacteria with proven health benefits, entering the market is increasing. Traditionally, probiotics have been associated with gut health, and most clinical interest has been focused on their use for prevention or treatment of gastrointestinal infections and diseases; however, during the last decade several investigators have also suggested the use of probiotics for oral health purposes. The aim of this review is to examine potential mechanisms of probiotic bacteria in the oral cavity and summarize observed effects of probiotics with respect to oral health. The review focuses on probiotic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, genera that are most used in various probiotic products. (Eur J Dent 2010;4:348-355)

This study aimed to determine the occurrence of Candida spp. in the oral cavity of predominantly breastfed infants and in their mothers' mouths and breasts, as well as in the oral cavity of bottlefed infants and in non-lactating women. One hundred and sixty nine women and eighty-five milk-fed infants took part in this study and were divided into four groups: 1) infants predominantly on breastfeeding (n = 55) and their mothers (n = 55); 2) infants on bottlefeeding (n = 30); 3) non-lactating women on whom oral collections were performed (n = 80) and, 4) non-lactating women on whom breast collections were performed (n = 34). Oral and mammary swabs were cultured on Sabouraud agar dextrose with chloramphenicol. The Candida yeast strains found were isolated and identified through morphological and biochemical tests. Candida species were much less frequent in infants who were predominantly breastfed than in those who were bottlefed. Yeasts were much more frequent on the breasts of lactating women, with statistical difference in relation to the control group.

  Background and Purpose: Candida dubliniensis is closely related to the most pathogenic and prevalent yeast, namely C. albicans. Candida species can opportunistically overgrow in vulnerable individuals and cause a variety of diseases. The current study aimed to identify and isolate C. dubliniensis species present in the Candida albicans species complex identified in the oral cavity of drug abusers. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 53 strains of C. albicans species complex, isolated from the oral mucosa of drug abusers in Isfahan, Iran. DNA extraction was accomplished through boiling procedure. Duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to amplify ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region using four specific primers. Fungal species were identified based on the difference in the size of the bands created in the Agarose gel. Results: Out of the 53 isolates under study, 30 (56.6%) and 14 (26.4%) samples were identified as C. albicans and C. dubliniensis, respectively. In the remaining 9 samples (17%), both types of Candida species were confirmed. Conclusion: The findings of the present study revealed the presence of a noticeable amount of C. dubliniensis in the oral cavity of drug abusers. Therefore, the probable presence of this fungus should be considered during the examination of oral infection among this group. To date, no research has directly investigated this issue in Iran.

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) has been known as a major cause of nosocomial bacterial infections worldwide. The bacteria are increasingly associated with a broad spectrum of antibiotic resistance, and this has become a widespread concern in a variety of hospitals.Antibiotic development and alternative treatment have become priorities for the treatment of bacterial infections.This study investigated the efficacy of meropenem in combination with five ethanolic extracts of plants in Myrtaceae against extensively drug-resistant (XDR) A. baumannii. The resistant phenotype was previously determined by microdilution method. XDR-A. baumannii strains showed resistance to meropenem with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in a range of 16 - 128 µg/mL, whereas the MIC value of all extracts, including Calistemon lancealatus, Eucalyptus citridora, Rhodomytus tomentasa, Syzygium cumini, and Xanthortemon chrysanthus, was over 1,000 µg/mL. Interestingly, all extracts potentiated the activity of the antibiotic by reducing the MIC values of the antibiotic. Xanthortemon chrysanthus extract displayed excellent synergism against the bacteria by decreasing the MIC value of the drug greater than 8-fold. In addition, the extract, at concentrations of 31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 µg/mL, obviously increased the inhibitory effect of meropenem (1/4´MIC) against A. baumannii. The percentage of bacterial growth inhibition by combination was 87.9, 88.8, 91.8, 93.6, 99.9, and 100, respectively. The results supported that the extract could improve the activity of ineffective antibiotics against drug-resistant pathogens.Therefore, the findings may serve as therapeutic options for XDR-A. baumannii infections in the future.

Candida species including Candida albicans, Candida krusei and Candida glabrata are opportunistic microorganisms that inhabit oral cavity. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of dental caries on Candida spp. biofilm-forming ability on nano- composite with the hypothesis that dental caries enhances the colonization of Candida spp. To assess Candida spp. colonisation in the oral cavity of the paediatric patient, samples were obtained from 30 subjects aged five to six years old from Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. The samples were collected from buccal mucosa, palate and tooth surfaces using sterile swabs. 10 mL of patient’s saliva suspension was also collected. Following that, the samples were inoculated on CHROMagar and incubated for 24 h at 37 ºC. Candida biofilm of caries isolate C. albicans (HNFC2), and C. albicans ATCC 32354 were developed on three different types of nano-composites. The study showed that no C. albicans was isolated from the caries-free oral cavity while 76% of children with caries possessed Candida spp. 65% of the yeasts were isolated from the tooth surface. Only 35% of the total isolates were obtained from soft tissues, including palatal and buccal mucosa. C. albicans is the most isolated Candida spp. with 82% and 67% of the yeast were obtained from the tooth surface and buccal mucosa, respectively. Besides, HNFC2 significantly colonised the nano- composites more than the ATCC (P < 0.05). In the comparison of the three types of nano- composites, nano-hybrid-based containing pre-polymerised filler (cB) exhibited the least C. albicans HNFC2 cells colonisation with 7.7 x 10³ cells mL-1. In contrast, the nano-composite that contained bulk-filled nanohybrid (cC) was the most colonised with 14.3 x 10³ cells mL-1. In conclusion, dental caries enhances the colonization of Candida spp. in children's oral cavity, and that caries isolate form more biofilm on nano-composites compared to the lab strain C. albicans.

Abstract Background: With an aging population, China is facing a huge buedern of elderly patients with drug resistant tuberculosisi (DR-TB), which has become an significant obscale for the global TB control targets. There is still few study on DR-TB among China so far.Thus, more researches on the epidemiological characteristics and trend of primary DR-TB among the elderly will be necessary. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in Shandong, China from 2004-2019, 12661 primary TB and 4368 elderly (≥60 years of age) primary TB cases were involved. Clinical characteristics including age, sex, Cavity, Smoking, drinking, comorbidity and drug susceptibility data were included. Descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-square and linear regression were used for analyzing.Results: Among 4368 elderly patients with primary TB, the DR-TB and MDR-TB accounted for 17.19% and 2.29% respectively. During 2004 to 2019, the proportions of MDR-TB, PDR-TB, RFP-resistance increased by160.00%, 18.18%, 231.82%, and the rate of DR-TB among elderly patients with primary cavitary TB increased by 255%.Among the elderly with primary DR-TB, the proportion of male (from 85.19 to 89.06), cavity (from 7.41 to 46.88), RFP (from 3.70 to 21.88), SM (from 37.04 to 62.5) increased significantly(P<0.05) . And the proportion of female (from 14.81 to 10.94), non-cavity (from 92.59 to 32.81 ), INH (from 66.67 to 57.81 ) decreased significantly. (P<0.05) .Conclusion: Among the elderly, the proportions of MDR-TB, PDR-TB,RFP-resistance and cavitary DR-TB increased significantly. The pattern of DR-TB changed from female, non-cavity and INH-resistant groups to male, cavity and RFP, SM-resistant groups. For a better control on the elderly DR-TB in the future, we should pay more attention to, male, smoking, drinking, COPD and diabetes subgroups.
