This article reports on a study that was carried out to establish determinants of ICT integration in mathematics teaching and learning. This paper focuses on the kind of support teachers require to effectively use ICT in teaching mathematics. An exploratory sequential mixed methods research design was employed to conduct this study in which quantitative data was initially collected in the first phase. Qualitative data was then collected in the second phase to explain the quantitative data collected in the initial phase. The study targeted all the teachers teaching in lower grades in both private and public schools. A sample size of 40 lower primary schools were purposively selected based on the availability of ICT tools for instructional purposes in those schools. Three teachers teaching in grade one, two and three were then selected using simple random sampling technique especially in cases where more than three teachers existed. Teacher Questionnaire, Teacher Interview Protocol and Observation Protocol were used to collect data. Data was analyzed qualitatively using descriptive phenomenological analysis in which data transcriptions were divided into themes and sub-themes related to phenomena under study. The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between supporting teachers’ use of ICT in the classroom and their actual use of ICT in teaching mathematics. The study findings however revealed that teachers teaching lower grades in Mombasa, Kenya were not adequately supported in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics. It was recommended that teachers must be granted adequate support in their use of ICT in teaching mathematics.

A Study on a Grade-One Type of Hypo-Elastic Models

In Hypo-elastic constitutive models an objective rate of the Cauchy stress tensor is expressed in terms of the current state of the stress and the deformation rate tensor D in a way that the dependency on the latter is a homogeneously linear one. In this work, a type of grade-one hypo-elastic models (i.e. models with linear dependency of the hypo-elasticity tensor on the stress) is considered for isotropic materials based on the objective corotational rates of stress. A positive real parameter denoted by n is involved in the considered type. Different values can be selected for this parameter, each selection leads to a specific model within the class of grade-one hypo-elasticity. The spin of the associated corotational rate is also dependent on the parameter n. In the special case of n=0, the corresponding hypo-elastic model reduces to a grade-zero one with the logarithmic rate of stress; noting that this rate is a corotational rate associated with the logarithmic spin tensor. Moreover, by choosing n=2, the model reduces to a grade-one hypo-elastic model with the Jaumann rate, i.e. the corotational rate associated with the vorticity spin tensor. As case studies, the simple shear problem is investigated with utilizing the considered type of hypo-elastic models with various values for parameter n, and the curves for the stress-shear response are depicted.

Abstract Background: Taiping houkui tea won the title of “the King of Green Tea” at the International Tea Exposition in 2004, which had an orchid fragrance but the material basis of the orchid fragrance had not been revealed yet. Objective: To investigate the material basis of the orchid fragrance and identify the quality grade of Taiping houkui tea. Methods: A method was developed for evaluating orchid-like aroma between different grades Taiping houkui tea by solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-fight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The crushed tea sample in a 25 mL headspace bottle was incubated at 90°C for 10 min. Then the gaseous sample was extracted by SPME divinylbenzene/polydimethylsiloxane fiber for 50 min and thermally desorpted at 250°C for 2 min. Results: In total, 735 volatile compounds were determined by SPME- GC×GC-TOFMS and 15 compounds were related to orchid-like aroma. Conclusions: The high-quality Taiping houkui tea has the orchid fragrance and the low-grade one does not; thus orchid-like aroma can be used as a reference of grades of Taiping houkui tea. Highlights: Thirty different grades of Taiping houkui tea samples were compared and analyzed experimentally, and the results showed that the special aroma substances, which played a key role in grade discrimination of Taiping houkui tea, were found by the statistical method.

What are the conditions for the intersection and mutual enrichment of two separate lines of development of conceptual thinking – those of everyday and scientific notions? We assume that such intersection would require at least two conditions. The first one is well known: it is modeling of essential properties of the subject under study. Educational models are providing hand-on actions of the young student with a theoretical content of the notion. The second condition is the motivational support for constructing educational models. This condition is not fulfilled as evidenced by the lack of students’ initiative in creating and using the educational models at the early stages of the introduction of scientific concepts. We expected the conceptual characters of educational games to complement scaffolding for bringing the initial concepts into the systematic school curricula?. On the one hand, these conceptual characters act according to the logic of the concept, on the other hand, they exist as the fairy-tale heroes. Our hypothesis is supported by the evidence from the formative experiments in grade one. When the conceptual characters became part of the lessons, learning became impregnated with feelings, imagination and initiative; in particular, the first-graders were building the learning models without any suggestions from their teacher. The assessment of these students showed that the introduction of the initial concepts with the help of conceptual characters significantly affected the very concepts thus developed; in particular, it promoted their attribution to the essential properties of the subject under study.

The Cost

This study was undertaken for costing out education needs for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa based on location, gender, district and grade. The sample consisted of 778 schools, including 364 females and 414 males. The study used descriptive statistics for analysis. It was found that rural students get slightly less pocket money than urban students. The cost of average monthly stationery, uniform cost, teacher cost and total cost for urban student was higher than for rural students. District Haripur was found to be the most successful school district. It was further found that better results need good financing. The study also confirmed that the girl student cost is less than a boy student. It was also concluded that the pocket money on average increases with grade. There was no significant difference of stationery cost across grades while grade one and grade four students’ cost on uniform was slightly higher than other grades.
