Most of agricultural production in Latin America consists of smallholder farmers who need the development of sustainable technologies, with costs according to their economic condition. Biofertilizers composed of free-living bacteria promote plant’s growth, improve productivity through the strengthening of its roots, and reduce the amount of synthetic fertilizer applied to the crops. The aims of this chapter are to highlight the microorganisms commonly used in agriculture as biofertilizers and the main researches carried out in several countries of Latin America, and to describe the development of an experimental biofertilizer for maize, based on strains of Azospirillum spp. and Pseudomonas fluorescens, in the highlands (Sierra Region) of Ecuador. Seven phylum and 95 genera o microorganism used as biofertilizers or Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) are summarized, along with the benefits, challenges and future prospect of their use. The effectiveness of the experimental biofertilizer developed in Ecuador was demonstrated through several experiments at the green house and field, in which it was evident the increase of root’s size, the amount of crocket, the percentage of dry matter, and the crops´ yield. The evaluations, accomplished on farmers’ fields showed 30% of increase in yield and 21% of decrease in the cost of production per kilogram; as a consequence of the use of biofertilizer plus 50% of the recommended chemical fertilization, in comparison with standard farming techniques. Farmers can reduce the application of synthetic fertilizers and sustainably increase crop yield through the use of this technology.

Introduction. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been successfully inserted in agriculture, aiming to find a better balance between agricultural production and environmental protection. However, there is a restriction on its application concerning the exploited species since the focus is on large-scale grain production, practically excluding small and medium-sized farms. Literature. Studies on the application of Azospirillum bacteria in horticultural species are still scarce, compared with those aimed at grain production. However, it appears that these bacteria are beneficial to the development and production of vegetables, whether they produce leaves, stems, bulbs, flowers, fruits, roots, or tubers, and may result in monetary gains, especially for small and medium agricultural producers. Conclusions. The use of Azospirillum bacteria to increase the quality and quantity of products from horticultural species and establish an environmentally friendly practice is a reality. However, the development of research that defines the best strategies for using this technology must be carried out continuously, aiming at the best conditions for producers.

The ways in which plant growth promoting rhizobacteria facilitate the growth of plants are considered and discussed. Both indirect and direct mechanisms of plant growth promotion are dealt with. Mikroba Bacillus subtilis merupakan agen pengendali hayati mempunyai kelebihan sebagai Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) yaitu dapat berfungsi sebagai biofertilizer, biostimulan, biodekomposer dan bioprotektan. Tujuan penelitian mengetahui potensi B. subtilis dalam merombak bahan organik sebagai usaha meningkatkan ketersediaan bahan organik tanah yang semakin menurun. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Petak Terbagi dengan berbagai  bahan organik sebagai petak utama (B0 = tanpa bahan organik, B1 = kotoran ayam,  B2 = kotoran kambing, B3 = kotoran sapi) dan aplikasi B.subtilis sebagai anak petak (A0 = 0 cc/L, A1 = 5cc/L, A2 = 10 cc/L, Pengamatan meliputi variabel tinggi tanaman, indeks luas daun, jumlah buah per tanaman, berat buah per tanaman, dan bahan organik tanah. Data pengamatan  dianalisis ragam  menggunakan  Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) versi 25 dan dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan untuk mengetahui signifikansi perbedaan antar perlakuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan tidak terdapat interaksi antara bahan organik kotoran ternak dan konsentrasi B. subtilis terhadap semua variabel pengamatan. Potensi B. subtilis sangat baik dalam mendekomposisi bahan organik yang ditunjukkan dengan peningkatan bahan organik, dan hasil terbaik pada kotoran  sapi (B3) dan konsentrasi B. subtilis 15 mL/L masing-masing sebesar 46.47 % dan 34.76 %. Variabel pertumbuhan tidak berbeda nyata kecuali tinggi tanaman dengan pertambahan tinggi paling banyak pada pemberian kotoran kambing sebesar 170.69 %.
