The forensic analysis and interpretation of tool marks raise for consideration key methods and advances in the field of tool marks in forensic science. This chapter shows how tool mark analysis can be utilized in the course of criminal investigations. The focus of the chapter is on bringing together as much scientific knowledge in the area as possible in an accessible manner. It covers all aspects of tool mark evidence from the crime scene to the courtroom. This chapter provides information about tool marks in an effort to assist tool mark examiners as well as people practicing forensic science, crime scene examiners, crime investigating officers and members of the legal profession. It includes information about the analysis of tool marks at the crime scene and in the laboratory, the interpretation and assessment of challenges for examination and interpretation and also the way in which tool mark evidence can be presented in a courtroom.

IoT devices produce information that can be used in criminal investigations and cybersecurity incidents to make inferences about identities, locations, chronologies, and relationships between relevant entities. Before this information is relied upon to make critical decisions, its veracity must be assessed critically, and the link between virtual and physical worlds must be evaluated carefully. This chapter presents the forensic science principles needed to exploit the full potential of IoT traces, including uniqueness, exchange, provenance, integrity, reliability, repeatability, evaluating links between virtual and physical entities, and formally assessing alternative hypotheses. This chapter also discusses core forensic processes and activities, demonstrating their application to forensic analysis of IoT devices using practical examples. A typology of IoT traces is proposed and their usefulness during an investigation is discussed. Finally, an investigative scenario is presented to illustrate the opportunities and challenges of exploiting IoT devices and traces for investigative and forensic purposes.

At the beginning of a new millennium it seems a good idea to stop for a moment and take stock of the current state of forensic science. As a field of scientific research and scientific application, forensic science is a little more than a century old. Forensic science may be said to have begun in 1887 with the simultaneous publication of A. Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and Hans Gross’s Handbuch für Untersuchungsrichter. Conan Doyle’s novel introduced to the world the character of Sherlock Holmes, whose literary career would popularize the use of physical evidence in criminal investigations. Gross’s manual for examining magistrates suggests ways in which the expertise of chemists, biologists, geologists, and other natural scientists could contribute to investigations. Gross’s book was translated into a number of languages and went through various updated editions during the course of the century. The intervening century saw the development and application of fingerprinting, firearm and tool mark identification, forensic chemistry, forensic biology, forensic toxicology, forensic odontology, forensic pathology, and forensic engineering. Increasingly, the judicial systems of the industrial nations of the world have come to rely upon the expertise of scientists in a variety of disciplines. In most advanced countries, virtually all criminal prosecutions now involve the presentation of scientific testimony. This has had the beneficial effect of diminishing the reliance of courts on eyewitness testimony and defendant confessions.

AbstractDocumentation and analysis of crime scene evidences are of great importance in any forensic investigation. In this paper, we present the potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to detect and analyze the beverage stains on a paper towel. To detect the presence and predict the age of the commonly used drinks in a crime scene, we leveraged the additional information present in the HSI data. We used 12 different beverages and four types of paper hand towel to create the sample stains in the current study. A support vector machine (SVM) is used to achieve the classification, and a convolutional auto-encoder is used to achieve HSI data dimensionality reduction, which helps in easy perception, process, and visualization of the data. The SVM classification model was re-established for a lighter and quicker classification model on the basis of the reduced dimension. We employed volume-gradient-based band selection for the identification of relevant spectral bands in the HSI data. Spectral data recorded at different time intervals up to 72 h is analyzed to trace the spectral changes. The results show the efficacy of the HSI techniques for rapid, non-contact, and non-invasive analysis of beverage stains.

Abstract Aristotle’s way of conceiving the relationship between mathematics and other branches of scientific knowledge is completely different from the way a contemporary scientist conceives it. This is one of the causes of the fact that we look at the mathematical passages we find in Aristotle’s works with the wrong expectation. We expect to find more or less stringent proofs, while for the most part Aristotle employs mere analogies. Indeed, this is the primary function of mathematics when employed in a philosophical context: not a demonstrative tool, but a purely analogical model. In the case of the geometrical examples discussed in this paper, the diagrams are not conceived as part of a formalized proof, but as a work in progress. Aristotle is not interested in the final diagram but in the construction viewed in its process of development; namely in the figure a geometer draws, and gradually modifies, when he tries to solve a problem. The way in which the geometer makes use of the elements of his diagram, and the relation between these elements and his inner state of knowledge is the real feature which interests Aristotle. His goal is to use analogy in order to give the reader an idea of the states of mind involved in a more general process of knowing.

In Posterior Analytics 71b9–12, we find Aristotle’s definition of scientific knowledge. The definiens is taken to have only two informative parts: scientific knowledge must be knowledge of the cause and its object must be necessary. However, there is also a contrast between the definiendum and a sophistic way of knowing, which is marked by the expression “kata sumbebekos”. Not much attention has been paid to this contrast. In this paper, I discuss Aristotle’s definition paying due attention to this contrast and to the way it interacts with the two conditions presented in the definiens. I claim that the “necessity” condition ammounts to explanatory appropriateness of the cause.

This article utilizes Anthony Giddens' concept of 'the reflexivity of modernity' to account for the dichotomy of traditional knowledge and scientific knowledge in the Pakistani context during the outbreak of COVID-19. It analyzes the concept of reflexivity as a form of criticism of irrationality and critiques notions of certainty. This article analyzes the concept of modernity endorsed by tradition in general, and by society in particular. Modernity is a constant process of interpreting and reinterpreting tradition in the light of knowledge at any given point of time. It also argues that pre-modern society refuses to reflect upon the nature of reflection itself. Self-reflexivity is the most crucial feature of modernity. The article views Pakistan as a society where reflexivity is not a part of contemporary culture, and it struggles to accept modernity. The article argues that modernity is intrinsically sociological, and contemporary Pakistani society shows resistance to modernity.  It also states that the appropriation of scientific knowledge is not made homogeneously in contemporary Pakistan during COVID-19. Pakistani society is predominantly influenced by religious discourse, which does not believe in self-reflexivity. The study will pave the way to employ the theory of reflexivity to analyze and interpret literary texts in terms of sociological perspectives.

<p><em>The rise of evil that existed in this period began from free association, abuse of drugs, theft and others. The moral deterioration is very much happening and the way to cope with it is by deepening the science of religion, which is with a lot of scientific knowledge of Tauhid. The science of Tauhid is a science that discusses the attributes of Allah SWT and his Messenger or called Aqaid Al-Khamsina. By studying the science of Tauhid can certainly reduce the number of criminality because by learning the science of Tauhid means a person's behavior will be much better. This research aims to determine the meaning of Aqaid Al-Khamsina and the explanation of each of these qualities. This research is included in Library research.  Primary data sources include the book by Imam Muhammad bin as-Sanusi named Umm al-Barahin, the publisher city of Kediri, the publisher name Santri Salaf Press, in the year 2015 and the book of Sheikh Muhammad Al-Fudholi named Kifayatul Awam, the publisher of Surabaya, the name of publisher Mutiara Ilmu, in the year 2018.  The secondary sources are books related to Aqaid Al-Khamsina, which is a book by Siradjuddin Abbas named I'itiqad Ahlussunnah Wal Jama'ah, a book by Abu Fikri Ihsani called Encyclopedia of Allah, a book by Imam Abil Izz Al-Hanafi named Tahdzib Syarah Aqidah Thahawiyah. In analyzing this research researchers use the Content analysis method (content analysis) is by means of drawing conclusions from several references that have been chosen, compared and combined.  The results of the research obtained is that Aqaid Al-Khamsina is a nature of Allah SWT and its Apostles that if in total there is 50 consisting of 20 mandatory nature of God, 20 impossibly god nature, 1 Jaiz nature, 4 mandatory nature of the Apostle, 4 the odds of the Apostle and 1 character Jaiz apostle. All of our mandatory qualities are known and Imani as the perfection of the creed.</em></p><p><strong><em>Keywords:</em></strong><em> Ahlussunnah Wal Jama'ah, Aqaid Al-Khamsina, Akidah, Tauhid.</em></p>

In a crime scene, the collection of evidence and a subsequent laboratory analysis compose the fundamental steps to allow the expert to reveal the truth for the final verdict in a jury and to bring back the comfort to the victim’s family. Bloodstains are usually found and sent to laboratories as a vestige to unravel the origin of the material. However, some scenes are modified in order to conceal the real culprit for the criminal act. For these cases, the luminol reagent can be useful. This test is very often used to visualize occult blood. Luminol is considered the most sensitive test once it can identify the blood presence in scale of nanograms. When this reagent comes into contact with blood,the light emission occurs through a phenomenon known as  chemiluminescence. This luminescence can be produced by other interfering compounds, leading to a misinterpretation for the presence of blood. Despite this shortcoming, the present review article highlights the indispensability of the reagent luminol on a crime scene.
