Scientists were successful in discovering Hepatitis A and B, but there is another virus which has a long incubation period, many people are asymptomatic and cause adverse effects. Three scientists Harvey J Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M Rice who have contributed their work in discovering a non-A, non-B hepatitis virus called Hepatitis C. Hepatitis is a disorder associated with the functioning hepatic cells in the liver. The person infected with Hepatitis C will have poor functioning of liver, vomiting, fatigue, jaundice and appetite. In this paper, I am going to explain about the Hepatitis C virus, and the work was done by three scientists and various research around it.

A májtranszplantációk fő indikációja a hepatitis C-fertőzés következtében kialakult végstádiumú C-cirrhosis hepatitis. A transzplantáció után a HCV-fertőzés visszatérése általános, a rekurráló C-hepatitis progresszív betegség, kezelés nélkül az immunszuppresszió mellett öt éven belül a betegek 20%-ában cirrhosist okoz. A visszatérő HCV-fertőzés kezelése a transzplantált betegek túlélésének legfontosabb meghatározó tényezője. A szerzők az irodalmi adatok és saját tapasztalatuk alapján áttekintik a kiújuló HCV-fertőzés kimenetelét befolyásoló tényezőket. Részletezik az immunszuppresszív kezelés hatását, a megfelelő immunszuppresszív gyógyszer kiválasztásának fontosságát. Áttekintik a visszatérő C-hepatitis diagnózisának fő szempontjait, hangsúlyozzák a protokoll szerint végzett májbiopsziák meghatározó szerepét a diagnózisban, a patológus, a hepatológus és a sebész szoros együttműködését. Ismertetik a várólistán lévő betegek kezelésével szerzett tapasztalatokat, a kiújult krónikus hepatitis korai preemptív kezelési eredményeit és a már szövettani elváltozásban megnyilvánuló krónikus C-hepatitis kezelési lehetőségeit és eredményeit. A transzplantáción átesett betegek krónikus C-hepatitisének jelenleg elfogadott gyógyszere a pegilált interferon és ribavirin kombinációja. Ezzel a terápiával a betegek 20–50%-ában tartós vírusmentesség érhető el. A vírusmentes betegekben egyértelműen csökken a májszövetben a gyulladásos aktivitás, javul a szövettani aktivitási index. A kezelés fibrózisgátló hatására is vannak adatok, ezek további megerősítése azonban multicentrikus vizsgálatokat igényel. A legtöbb tanulmány nem igazolja a korai, szövettani eltérés nélküli antivirális kezelés előnyét. Ebben a betegcsoportban a kezelés gyakori mellékhatása az anémia és a neutropenia, ezért ajánlott az erythropoetin és a granulocyta-stimuláló faktor adása. A rekurráló C-hepatitisben szenvedő betegek optimális kezelése, a pegilált interferon és ribavirin dózisának meghatározása, a terápia időtartama, a mellékhatások csökkentése, a nagyobb arányú gyógyulás elérése további vizsgálatokat, klinikai tanulmányokat tesz szükségessé.

Despite the height of the coronavirus infection, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded in Stockholm in October 2020. This event was held online for the first time and was not accompanied by the traditional honoring of the laureates. In his will, Alfred Nobel entrusted the selection of the winner in this nomination to the Karolinska Medical and Surgical University of Stockholm, and the first award in this nomination took place in 1901. Since then, this event has been held 110 times, and 216 scientists have become laureates of the prize in the field of physiology and medicine, since the nominees are often not just one, but a group of researchers. This happened in 2020 - for research in the field of studying the hepatitis C virus, three scientists received the most prestigious award: the British Michael Houghton and the Americans Harvey Alter and Charles Rice. Due to the results of the research, which these three people conducted separately from each other, for the first time it became possible to completely eliminate the virus from the body.

Abstract The risk of hepatitis virus transmission from transfusions has declined dramatically from that of the 1940s when posttransfusion hepatitis (PTH) was first appreciated. Introduction of hepatitis B surface antigen screening and conversion to volunteer donors for whole-blood donations in the late 1960s and early 1970s led to substantial reduction in PTH cases. However, up to 10% of the recipients continued to develop PTH, most cases of which were attributed to an unknown non-A, non-B viral agent. Implementation of surrogate marker testing (i.e., alanine aminotransferase and anti-hepatitis B virus core antigen) for residual non-A, non-B hepatitis in the late 1980s reduced the per unit risk of PTH from 1 in 200 to about 1 in 400. Hepatitis C virus was discovered in 1989 and quickly was established as the causative agent of >90% of non-A, non-B PTH. Introduction of progressively improved antibody assays in the early 1990s reduced the risk of PTH due to hepatitis C virus to about 1 in 100 000. Although additional hepatitis viruses exist (e.g., hepatitis G virus), these appear to be minor contributors to clinical PTH, which has been virtually eradicated.
