The Chilean coast is controlled by the tectonics and structure, generating an irregular coastal landscape, with bays, marine terraces, sandy and gravel beaches, sand dune fields and Andean slopes, forming some mega cliffs that are attacked by waves. The Chilean coastline is shaped by headland bay beaches, with a dynamic coast modeled by south-western winds and south–north longshore current. We analyzed the case of the Coquimbo mega headland bay beach, which consists of four headland bay beaches. A methodological study was carried out on the morphometric parameters of the shoreline and the types of beaches dominated by waves along with geomorphological analysis of the coastal zone. We observed a mass transfer process from south to north. The northern sections of the bays are the places with the densest sand dune fields. This concentration of dunes occurs in each bay individually and in the mega bay as well. The sedimentary supply comes from Andean catchments to the shoreline and is transported and reworked by the longshore current to the northern area, where a huge sand field dune has developed, 120 km away from the mouth of Limarí River, the most southern catchment in the study area. In the mega bay, the current trend is a continuous sedimentary supply, despite the semi-arid conditions and the extreme drought that has affected the area since 2011. The study area is also a popular destination in Chile for beach tourism and is a place of interest for the mining industry.

Abstract Aims The belowground bud bank plays an important role in vegetation restoration of sand dune ecosystems in semi-arid regions. However, few studies have focused on the temporal-spatial changes of belowground bud banks in interdune lowlands. Methods The size and composition of belowground bud bank in five interdune lowlands with different sizes were investigated for one growing season to determine the temporal and spatial changes in belowground bud bank. Important Findings Total bud bank density was the highest in the medium-sized interdune lowland as was tiller bud density. The density of stem-base buds exhibited an opposite trend while rhizome bud density did not change with interdune lowland size. There was a significant seasonal change in the bud bank size. The total bud density peaked in August and was the lowest in October. A similar trend was found for rhizome bud density, whereas the density of stem-base buds showed an opposite trend, and tiller bud density did not change significantly during the growing season. We conclude that the belowground bud bank density is changed with interdune lowland size and season. These results contribute to the understanding of adaptive strategies of plants growing in active dune ecosystems and provide pointers for adopting effective measures to restore and conserve dune vegetation in semi-arid regions.

The mining industry continues to be an important sector of the Ghanaian economy, contributing to the foreign exchange, employment and socioeconomic development after the colonial period. The current trend of mining operations requires greater skills and technical knowledge because they involve sophisticated machines, dangerous chemicals and explosive mechanisms, underground operations etc. Accidents in the mines just like any occupational accident may lead to deaths, injuries, disabilities and financial losses. One of the ways of improving occupational knowledge and skills is to acquire some level of understanding of accident causation mechanism. An analytical technique which will form the basis for accident and injury epidemiological studies is therefore necessary to ensure operational safety improvement. A retrospective statistical analysis of accidents in eight gold mining companies was undertaken through measures of association, hypothesis testing, trend analysis and predictive measurements. The results of the study indicate that 20% of accident cases resulted in deaths, 30% were serious and 50% minor accidents. Underground mining increases the risk fatal accident by 1.46, morning shift increases the risk of fatal accident by 4.81 and being a contract miner increases the risk of fatal accident by 1.05. The part of body injured can predict the degree of injury by reducing the error of prediction by 40.2%. Since proportion of accident fatalities increases with increasing age of miners, it is recommended that miners with higher age should not be task with high risk jobs. It is recommended again that, miners should be given improved protective clothes to guide against occurrences of fatal incidents. Especially, clothes to cover the head and upper part of the body since they top the fatality chart and the fact that fatality is strongly associated with body part. <p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0720/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

Abstract. Mountain permafrost and rock glaciers in the dry Andes are of growing interest due to the increase in mining industry and infrastructure development in this remote area. Empirical models of mountain permafrost distribution based on rock glacier activity status and temperature data have been established as a tool for regional-scale assessments of its distribution; this kind of model approach has never been applied for a large portion of the Andes. In the present study, this methodology is applied to map permafrost favourability throughout the semi-arid Andes of central Chile (29–32° S), excluding areas of exposed bedrock. After spatially modelling of the mean annual air temperature distribution from scarce temperature records (116 station years) using a linear mixed-effects model, a generalized additive model was built to model the activity status of 3524 rock glaciers. A permafrost favourability index (PFI) was obtained by adjusting model predictions for conceptual differences between permafrost and rock glacier distribution. The results indicate that the model has an acceptable performance (median AUROC: 0.76). Conditions highly favourable to permafrost presence (PFI  ≥  0.75) are predicted for 1051 km2 of mountain terrain, or 2.7 % of the total area of the watersheds studied. Favourable conditions are expected to occur in 2636 km2, or 6.8 % of the area. Substantial portions of the Elqui and Huasco watersheds are considered to be favourable for permafrost presence (11.8 % each), while in the Limarí and Choapa watersheds permafrost is expected to be mostly limited to specific sub-watersheds. In the future, local ground-truth observations will be required to confirm permafrost presence in favourable areas and to monitor permafrost evolution under the influence of climate change.

Considering each interdune lowland as a self-contained unit, we investigated species composition of 15 interdune lowlands in stabilized and active dunes, respectively, and identified the relationship of species richness and lowland area. The results showed that 1) with the enlargement of lowland area, the overall species richness of interdune lowlands in stabilized and active dunes increased logarithmically. When the area was the same, richness of stabilized dunes was more than that of active dunes. 2) with the increasing of lowland area in stabilized and active dunes, psammophytes richness relative to the overall species richness decreased logarithmically. When the area was the same, the percentage in lowlands of active dunes was more than that of stabilized dunes. Therefore, We concluded that dune stabilization, on one hand, raises species richness and on the other, leads to the loss of endemic or rare psammophytes in interdune lowlands.
