Background: The development of new bioimplants with enhanced mechanical and biomedical properties have great impetus for researchers in the field of biomaterials. Metallic materials such as stainless steel 316L (SS316L), applied for bioimplants are compatible to the human osteoblast cells and bear good toughness. However, they suffer by corrosion and their elastic moduli are very high than the application where they need to be used. On the other hand, ceramics such as hydroxyapatite (HAP), is biocompatible as well as bioactive material and helps in bone grafting during the course of bone recovery, it has the inherent brittle nature and low fracture toughness. Therefore, to overcome these issues, a hybrid combination of HAP, SS316L and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been synthesized and characterized in the present investigation. Methods: CNTs were acid treated to functionalize their surface and cleaned prior their addition to the composites. The mixing of nano-hydroxyapatite (HAPn), SS316L and CNTs was carried out by nitrogen gas purging followed by the ball milling to insure the homogeneous mixing of the powders. In three compositions, monolithic HAPn, nanocomposites of CNTs reinforced HAPn, and hybrid nanocomposites of CNTs and SS316L reinforced HAPn has been fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. Results: SEM analysis of SPS samples showed enhanced sintering of HAP-CNT nanocomposites, which also showed significant sintering behavior when combined with SS316L. Good densification was achieved in the nanocomposites. No phase change was observed for HAP at relatively higher sintering temperatures (1100°C) of SPS and tricalcium phosphate phase was not detected by XRD analysis. This represents the characteristic advantage with enhanced sintering behavior by SPS technique. Fracture toughness was found to increase with the addition of CNTs and SS316L in HAPn, while hardness initially enhanced with the addition of nonreinforcement (CNTs) in HAPn and then decrease for HAPn-CNT-SS316L hybrid nanocomposites due to presence of SS316L. Conclusion: A homogeneous distribution of CNTs and SPS technique resulted in the improved mechanical properties for HAPn-CNT-SS316L hybrid nanocomposites than other composites and suggested their application as bioimplant materials.

Background: Textile industries discharge harmful synthetic dyes to nearby water sources. These colour effluents should be treated before discharge to reduce the toxicity caused by synthetic colours. Objective: To synthesize visible light active superstructures to reduce water pollution caused by textile industries. Methods: We have successfully synthesized ZnO/Dy/NiO hybrid nanocomposites using waste curd as fuel by a simple combustion method. The obtained material was able to reduce recombination and enhanced the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The as-synthesized material was characterized by XRD, absorption spectroscopy, FESEM, EDAX, etc. The obtained hybrid nanostructure was used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue under sunlight, UV light as well as in dark. Comparative experiments were carried out with a variation of catalytic load, pH, dye concentrations, etc. for a better understanding of the performance of the catalyst at various conditions. Results and Conclusion: The ternary compound shows wide range of absorption by expanding absorption band both in UV and visible regions. ZnO/Dy/NiO hybrid nanocomposites performed well and showed uniqueness in the activity uder visible light.

The influence of various graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) content on the tensile, flexural and Charpy impact characteristics of carbon, Kevlar and hybrid carbon/Kevlar fibers reinforced epoxy matrix composites was investigated. Both of composite configurations as carbon and Kevlar at outer and core skins were experimentally tested. The SEM images for flexural specimens were taken to observe the adhesion mechanism of GnPs particles with fiber/epoxy system. It is found that hybridization with Kevlar layers is contributed a positive effect on the hybrid carbon/Kevlar laminate structures in terms of tensile, flexural and impact behaviour. The incorporation of GnPs particles in hybrid and non-hybrid composite samples results in significant improvements in tensile, flexural and impact properties, and the greatest improvement occurs within the GnPs particle content of 0.1 and 0.25 wt%, indicating that the interfacial bonding between the matrix and the fibers is better due to the large surface area of the GnPs and the good entanglement between the GnPs layers and the matrix chains. The samples of impact test are experimented for edgewise and flatwise directions.

The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the effect of hybridization of montmorillonite (MMT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on the thermal and viscoelastic properties of shape memory epoxy polymer (SMEP) nanocomposites. In this study, ultra-sonication was utilized to disperse 1%, 3%, and 5% MMT in combination with 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% MWCNT into the epoxy system. The fabricated SMEP hybrid nanocomposites were characterized via differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The storage modulus (E’), loss modulus (E”), tan δ, decomposition temperature, and decomposition rate, varied upon the addition of the fillers. Tan δ indicated a reduction of glass transition temperature (Tg) for all the hybrid SMEP nanocomposites. 3% MMT/1% MWCNT displayed best overall performance compared to other hybrid filler concentrations and indicated a better mechanical property compared to neat SMEP. These findings open a way to develop novel high-performance composites for various potential applications, such as morphing structures and actuators, as well as biomedical devices.

Abstract In this paper, the effects of filler content and the use of hybrid nanofillers on agglomeration and nanocomposite mechanical properties such as elastic moduli, ultimate strength and elongation to failure are investigated experimentally. In addition, thermoset epoxy-based two-phase and hybrid nanocomposites are simulated using multiscale modeling techniques. First, molecular dynamics simulation is carried out at nanoscale considering the interphase. Next, finite element method and micromechanical modeling are used for micro and macro scale modeling of nanocomposites. Nanocomposite samples containing carbon nanotubes, graphene nanoplatelets, and hybrid nanofillers with different filler contents are prepared and are tested. Also, field emission scanning electron microscopy is used to take micrographs from samples’ fracture surfaces. The results indicate that in two-phase nanocomposites, elastic modulus and ultimate strength increase while nanocomposite elongation to failure decreases with reinforcement weight fraction. In addition, nanofiller agglomeration occurred at high nanofiller contents especially higher than 0.75 wt% in the two-phase nanocomposites. Nanofiller agglomeration was observed to be much lower in the hybrid nanocomposite samples. Therefore, using hybrid nanofillers delays/prevents agglomeration and improves mechanical properties of nanocomposite at the same total filler content.
