An Electronic-Service (E-Service) can be defined as a collection of network-resident software programs that collaborate for supporting users in both accessing and selecting data and services of their interest present in a provider site. Examples of e-services are e-commerce, e-learning, e-government, e-recruitment and e-health applications. E-Services are undoubtely one of the engines presently supporting the Internet Revolution. Indeed, nowadays, a large number and a great variety of providers offer their services also or exclusively via the Internet.

One of the most closely investigated topics in e-learning research has always been the effectiveness of adaptive learning environments. The technological evolutions that have dramatically changed the educational world in the last six decades have allowed ever more advanced and smarter solutions to be proposed. The focus of this paper is to depict the three main dimensions that have driven research in the e-learning field and the evolution of the technological approaches adopted for the purposes of building advanced educational environments for distance learning. Then, the three different approaches adopted by the authors are discussed; these consist of a multi-agent system, an adaptive SCORM compliant package and an e-learning recommender system.

Abstract E-learning has been a revolution in recent years in the training field. This, combined with the increased use of the mobile devices has caused the emergence of the m-learning. Hence new problems have appeared in the training field, such as showing correctly some learning contents in a mobile device that has restricted features or taking into account the learner’s context in the learning process, because the learner can be anywhere. Because of this, this paper proposes a new multi-agent system for adapting the learning contents to the learner’s competences, to the learner’s context and to his/her mobile device. The paper also describes in detail the prototype developed for testing the proposed design.

The growing concern for education and innovative technologies has led to a new dimension of learning. The paper proposes a new framework NormATel using the concept of Normative Multi-Agent system, Activity Theory and e-Learning. The basic idea of the paper is to make e-learning more user specific using the concept of Web 3.0, like its ability to work on two separate modes: single user learning and community based learning. The proposed framework is verified using Deontic Logic.

Higher education in accounting has witnessed, in time, a massive development, a fact that has required the identification of the most efficient training methods based on competencies so as to meet the new professional challenges. Computer-based training represents a didactic method that improves accounting education. This chapter presents some elements regarding e-learning in accounting and how the educational software can include artificially intelligent elements that may humanize the dialogue of the teacher-computer, like pedagogical agents. The authors present the main ideas of how they designed and developed a multi-agent system that has been incorporated into an educational soft that was tested and validated within an experiment with the students from the specialization of Accounting and Management Information Systems of the Vasile Alecsandri University of Bacau, Romania.

This paper provides an overview of personalized e-learning services and related technology and presents a multi-agent system for delivering adaptive e-learning. We discussed the main issues related to personalization in e-learning: technology advancement and the shift in perception of the learning process, one size fits all versus personalized services, and the adaptation process. The paper provides also an overview of most known implemented systems for adaptive e-learning, as well as detailed description of the architecture and components of the proposed multi-agent framework. Finally, the paper concludes with some comments about the dimensions to consider for implementing personalization..
