A new unsymmetrical photochromic diarylethene, 1-(3-thienyl)-2-(2- n-butyl-5-hydroxymethyl-3-thienyl) perfluoroncyclopentene (1a), was synthesized and its optoelectronic properties, such as photochromism and fluorescence in solution and in PMMA film were investigated. This compound exhibited remarkable photochromism, changing from colorless to pink after irradiation with UV light in hexane solution. The new diarylethene also exhibited relatively strong fluorescence by photoirradiation in solution and in PMMA film, and the fluorescence intensity decreased along with the photochromism upon irradiation 297 nm light and its closed-ring isomer showed almost no fluorescence

ABSTRACTIn Japan, scallop shells are considered to be industrial waste. Thus far, attempts for reusing these shells have been mainly limited to the commercial production of CaCO3. Nevertheless, there are no clear economic benefits associated with the use of scallop shells as a source of CaCO3. Hence, we are attempting to investigate a new value-added use for scallop shells as an advanced functional material. In this regard, we focused our attention on nuclear wastewater, which contains radioactive Sr and Cs. Sr, which tends to accumulate in bones, is believed to cause bone cancer. Hence, it is highly desirable to develop a method for removing Sr from contaminated water. In this study, we investigate whether scallop shells demonstrate the ability to remove Sr from a solution. From the results obtained, scallop shells can remove Sr solutes from a solution; furthermore, as compared to CaCO3, they demonstrate superior ability for removing Sr.

Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) are intensively studied as a new functional material for sensors, nanosystems and electronic systems. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for example show unique mechanical and electromechanical properties and they change electronic properties by interacting with the environment (e.g. for chemical and biochemical sensing). Therefore CNTs are very promising candidates for active elements in future nanoscaled transducers. Concepts for carbon nanotube sensors for mechanical and chemical quantities are presented. We focus on single-walled carbon nanotubes as "simple" macro molecular functional structures with an option for low scale integration in micro and nano electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS).
