A calculation method for counter-current type coil-wound heat exchanger is presented for heat exchange process. The numerical simulation method is applied to determine the basic physical parameters of wound bundles. By controlling the inlet fluid velocity varying in coil-wound heat exchanger to program and calculate the iterative process. The calculation data is analyzed by comparison of numerical result and the unit three dimensional pipe bundle model was built. Studies show that the introduction of numerical simulation can simplify the pipe winding process and accelerate the calculation and design of overall configuration in coil-wound heat exchanger. This method can be applied to the physical modeling and heat transfer calculation of pipe bundles in coil wound heat exchanger, program to calculate the complex heat transfer changing with velocity and other parameters, and optimize the overall design and calculation of spiral bundles.

The paper presents an experimental heat transfer enhancement study in a tubular heat exchanger fitted with delta-winglets. The experimental work was conducted by varying the airflow rate in the test tube having a constant wall heat-flux for turbulent regime, Reynolds number (Re) from 5200 to 23,000. Effects of three pitch ratios (PR=P/D=1.5, 2.0 and 3.0) and two attack angles, α = 45° and 60°, of the winglets at a single blockage ratio (BR=b/D = 0.15) on thermal characteristics are examined. The experimental results show that the winglet-inserted tube yields, respectively, the heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance in the form of TEF around 1.99–4.08, 4.9–14.3 times higher than the plain tube and 0.85–1.85, depending on the operating condition.

Experimental heat transfer and isothermal pressure drop data for single-phase water flows in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) with chevron plates are presented. In a single-pass U-type counterflow PHE, three different chevron plate arrangements are considered: two symmetric plate arrangements with β = 30 deg/30 deg and 60 deg/60 deg, and one mixed-plate arrangement with β = 30 deg/60 deg. For water (2 < Pr < 6) flow rates in the 600 < Re < 104 regime, data for Nu and f are presented. The results show significant effects of both the chevron angle β and surface area enlargement factor φ. As β increases, and compared to a flat-plate pack, up to two to five times higher Nu are obtained; the concomitant f, however, are 13 to 44 times higher. Increasing φ also has a similar, though smaller effect. Based on experimental data for Re a 7000 and 30 deg ≤ β ≤ 60 deg, predictive correlations of the form Nu = C1,(β) D1(φ) Rep1(β)Pr1/3(μ/μw)0.14 and f = C2(β) D2(φ) Rep2(β) are devised. Finally, at constant pumping power, and depending upon Re, β, and φ, the heat transfer is found to be enhanced by up to 2.8 times that in an equivalent flat-plate channel.

The experimental investigations of non-condensable gases effect on the steam condensation inside multirow horizontal tube bundle of heat exchanger under heat transfer to boiling water were carried out at the large-scale test facility in the Institute for Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE). The experiments were carried out for natural circulation conditions in primary and secondary circuits of the facility at primary circuit steam pressure of Ps1 = 0.34 MPa. The experimental heat exchanger’s tube bundle consists of 248 horizontal coiled tubes arranged in 62 rows. Each row consists of 4 stainless steel tubes of 16 mm in outer diameter, 1.5 mm in wall thickness and of 10.2 m in length. The experimental heat exchanger was equipped with more than 100 thermocouples enabling the temperatures of primary and secondary facility circuits to be controlled in both tube bundle and in the inter-tubular space. The non-condensable gases with different density — nitrogen and helium were used in the experiments. The volumetric content of gases in tube bundle amounted to ε = 0.49. The empirical correlation for the prediction of the relative heat transfer coefficient k/k0 = f (ε) for steam condensation in steam-gas mixture was obtained.
