AbstractA growing interest in wrought magnesium alloys has been noticed recently, mainly due to development of various SPD (severe plastic deformation) methods that enable significant refinement of the microstructure and – as a result – improvement of various functional properties of products. However, forming as-cast magnesium alloys with the increased aluminum content at room temperature is almost impossible. Therefore, application of heat treatment before forming or forming at elevated temperature is recommended for these alloys. The paper presents the influence of selected heat treatment conditions on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the as-cast AZ91 alloy. Deformation behaviour of the as-cast AZ61 alloy at elevated temperatures was analysed as well. The microstructure analysis was performed by means of both light microscopy and SEM. The latter one was used also for fracture analysis. Moreover, the effect of chemical composition modification by lithium addition on the microstructure of the AZ31-based alloy is presented. The test results can be helpful in preparation of the magnesium-aluminum alloys for further processing by means of SPD methods.

Precipitation Formation

Magnesium alloys have low formability at room temperature associated with its hexagonal closed pack structure. Formation of precipitates during deformation may pin the grain boundary and reduce the final grain size, which literally means the improvement of formability. The aim of this study is to design magnesium alloys that are capable of forming precipitate during hot deformation. Thermodynamic modeling software, FactSage, has been used to design Mg-Al-Sn alloys based on forming target Mg2Sn precipitate at hot deformation temperatures between 250 and 350oC. Uniaxial compression at elevated temperatures has been performed to simulate the hot deformation behaviour as well as to enhance the formation of precipitates. Strain rates used in this study were in the range of 1.0 to 0.001s-1for a constant deformation degree of 90%. It was found that the formation of precipitate depends on deformation temperature and strain rate. Measured amounts of precipitate were compared with the calculated equilibrium results from FactSage.

The fatigue behaviour of aluminium-magnesium alloys has been investigated in the recrystallized CG state and in an ultrafine-grained (UFG) state after equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). A strong improvement of the fatigue behaviour up to 12 ECAP passes has been found for an AlMg0.5 alloy. The results have been interpreted in consideration of the microstructure of the different states. Additionally, for an investigation of the influence of impurities on the cyclic stability of Aluminium, 3 different AlMg alloys with Magnesium contents of 0.5, 1, and 2 wt.-% have been compared. Total strain controlled fatigue tests have shown an improvement of the cyclic stability with increasing Mg content.
