The purpose of the present study was to identify the factors that are the strongest predictors of intentions and use of integrative medicine approaches in clinical practice. Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior was used to guide our examination of these questions. Health care professionals exposed to a Veterans Health Administration program (N = 288) who completed survey instruments prior to and immediately after the program and 3 months later were the participants for this study. Findings suggest that the theory of planned behavior performs reasonably well in explaining our data showing the integration of integrative medicine approaches into clinical practice. We found that self-efficacy to use integrative health approaches and perceived preparedness to discuss nonpharmaceutical approaches with patients were the strongest predictors of intentions to use integrative health approaches and self-reported change in clinical practice. The implications of these findings are discussed.

This review article summarizes the recent cardiovascular outcome data for sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 analogues, which have been found to reduce cardiovascular events. We also detail the implications these new medications will have on clinical practice through a review of recent diabetes guidelines and cost-effectiveness data.

In 2008, the positive effects of propranolol on infantile hemangiomas (IH) have been discovered serendipitously by Léauté-Labrèze and her coworkers. Since then, propranolol has been in use in allday clinical practice worldwide for treatment of IH. It even caused some kind of paradigm shift in the overall management of these lesions, though propranolol is still not FDA approved, respectively, in “off-label” use for this indication in the majority of institutions. Thus, the aim of this communication is to evaluate the literature for current evidence regarding guidelines for preassessment and standards of care before initiation of therapy.

Many individuals seek relief from symptoms associated with HIV infection through the use of integrative medicine. Symptoms include neuropsychiatric problems such as anxiety, depression, cognitive dysfunction, and headaches, as well as somatic disorders related to viral infection and immunodysregulation, such as fatigue, diarrhea, and cardiovascular problems. As antiretroviral treatments have become increasingly effective, symptom management with minimal side effects has become more important. A variety of integrative treatments, including botanicals, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and herbs, have been utilized, and mind–body approaches such as mindfulness, hypnosis, and movement therapy have been found to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. This chapter examines widely used integrative medicine approaches to alleviating distressing HIV-related symptoms. Implications for clinical practice are discussed. Integrative approaches emphasize self-management of symptoms and are widely sought after and accepted, even by patients who resist other forms of medical treatment.

In this essay, we posit that modern medicine, in its Asclepian focus, has subordinated the need and importance of Hygieian healing and caring, and in so doing has lost a quality that is essential to medicine, and fundamental to its lasting moral value. We argue that an integrative medicine must be based upon a core philosophical foundation that re-enjoins Asclepian and Hygieian approaches in true conceptual and practical dialectic, such that integration represents a synthesis of these orientations in epistemic, humanitarian and ethical domains. While we assert that a core philosophy is critical to the development and sustainability of an integrative medicine, such claims remain vacant in the absence of some meaningful attempt to put these concepts into action. We believe that to apply such philosophical foundations, an approach is necessary that simultaneously engages education, research, practice and policy. This involves not simply studying and co-opting new (or older, more ancient) modalities in a curative paradigm, but represents a paradigm shift that requires and is based upon understanding of, and skills for the application(s) of the most appropriate types of treatment(s) to affect disease, illness and health in a patient-centered model of care.

Integrative medicine is not only an innovative China model in clinical practice, but also the bridge for TCM toward the world. In the past thirty years, great achievements have been made in integrative medicine researches, especially in clinical practice. The clinical achievements mainly include the following three: innovating methodology of disease-syndrome combination, excavating the classical theory in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), preventing and curing refractory diseases. The development ideas and strategies of integrative medicine for future mainly include (a) standing on frontier field of international medicine and improving the capability of preventing and curing refractory diseases; (b) moving prevention and control strategy forward and improving the curative effect of common and frequent disease; (c) excavating the classical theory of TCM and broadening the treatment system of modern medicine; (d) improving the innovation level of new high effective drugs on the basis of classical prescriptions and herbs in TCM; (e) rerecognizing the theory of formula corresponding to syndrome in TCM and enhancing the level of clinical research evidence based on evidence-based medicine. Integrative medicine will do obtain greater achievements in creating new medicine and pharmacology and make more tremendous contributions for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and human health care.

This chapter focuses on past and current integrative practices in Turkey. Native practices have been embedded within Turkish culture for centuries as a part of the country’s heritage and history. Recently, the Ministry of Health approved a list of complementary therapies and standards to regulate practices in integrative medicine. In addition, the nursing discipline has come a long way in terms of research on integrative practices, from descriptive studies to randomized control group studies and projects at the doctorate level. However, in spite of research activities and the emergence of new courses in nursing curricula, the progress in implementing integrative therapies to clinical practice in Turkey has been very slow.
