Acquisition as a growth strategy is often burdened by subsequent unsatisfactory performance. The literature suggests that a potential cause is mismanagement of knowledge. Such mismanagement may occur if the barriers to knowledge sharing in acquisitioned growth are not adequately understood. Hence, the aim of this study is to improve understanding of the potentially most restrictive knowledge sharing barriers in acquisitioned growth. It does so through a case study in the context of the software business. The findings of the study will help companies with a strategy of growing through acquisitions to better prepare for the challenging task of managing such growth. The paper also contributes to the literature on knowledge management by defining knowledge sharing barriers in the context of acquisitioned growth in the software business. A contribution to growth literature is made by touching on the issue of the management of acquisitions from the perspective of knowledge management, and especially knowledge sharing.

Purpose Despite the fact that schools should be places where learning occurs, most schools have overlooked the importance of knowledge. In contrast, commercial firms have recognized knowledge as a strategic intangible asset and a key resource of the enterprises. Therefore, enterprises have already harnessed knowledge to a great extent with wide practice of knowledge management (KM). The purpose of this paper is to show that KM could be applied to the education sector similar to the practice in the business world for leveraging intellectual assets. This paper examines how schools can kick off the process of KM implementation. This paper also reports what have been done and what should be done in KM implementation better in a school. This can give insights for schools which will try KM in near future. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a case study in a secondary school to explore how KM can be kicked off and sustained in a school setting. A KM system called knowledge base and a document management system called Digital Archive were developed to serve as the infrastructure for knowledge sharing. Lesson study and communities of practice (CoPs) were adopted to be the platforms for knowledge sharing among teachers in the school. A case study of the processes and lesson learned was done in this paper. Multiple sources of data, including observations, questionnaires and interviews, have been collected for evaluation. Findings In this paper, KM implementation was found to be effective through dual approaches: information-based and people-/interaction-based approaches. A knowledge base and a Digital Archive as knowledge repositories and lesson study and CoPs as platforms for knowledge sharing have been successfully established to facilitate sharing information/knowledge and nurturing a sharing culture and trust. Challenges faced and the related coping strategies during the process of implementation were shared and reflected. It was also found that building sharing culture is the critical turning point of the process of KM implementation. Breaking through the barrier of sharing was found to be very essential to KM implementation. Research limitations/implications This paper adopts case study methodology to report the process of KM implementation in a school. Although these results of the study conducted in one school may not be generalized to other school contexts, the lessons learned in the study will be a strong empirical evidence of research of KM implementation, especially in schools. Because of the limited number of prior studies and the importance of the pioneering work of launching KM implementation, this paper tries to address the research gap by using theory building from cases as a research strategy rather than theory testing research, especially in “how”and“why” in the steps of kicking off KM implementation in an unexplored research area. Practical implications This paper shows a case of KM implementation in a school with thoughtful procedures of implementing information-based and people-/interaction-based approaches. The paper is a showcase that will shed light on the processes and lessons learned and also helps to provide a model for schools who are interested in applying KM in their schools. Social implications Most people might think that KM can be applied only in commercial sector. This paper shows that KM can also be adopted in schools as well as other sectors. Originality/value This paper represents one of the pioneering work of implementing KM in a school. It hopes to make contributions for KM implementation also in the public sector within which are non-profit-making organizations.

With the vast movement toward promoting and developing models, practices, and technological environments in the engineering domain, a need exists to facilitate communication, collaboration, and coordination among its actors. Communities of Practice (CoPs) represent the natural and logical solution to answer these needs. In this paper, the authors propose a knowledge management process to exploit tacit and explicit knowledge in the engineering domain within the framework of a CoP of engineering. The approach used in this work introduces new elements in the Nonaka’s SECI model for knowledge creation. To validate the proposed process, a qualitative case study has been conducted on two CoPs, “CPsquare” and “The Cisco Learning Network”. It has been shown that CoPs and social learning impact learning as well as knowledge sharing. The use of web technologies and socio-technical approach in the management of knowledge is of high importance.

This study aims to evaluate the willingness of knowledge sharing and acquisition behaviors among KIPSAS’s employees to comply with the values of Al-Ta’allum. These are aligned with the principles of knowledge management. The main objective is to identify the differences in knowledge sharing of the staff with their knowledge acquisition behavior. Thus, identifying the state of readiness among staff. This study utilizes an exploratory approach to examine these phenomena. Related documents were analyzed to get an overview of the factors and values of Al-Ta’allum that have been identified and examined within the study. Questionnaires were sent to 129 respondents from academic and non-academic staffs. But only 62 responses were gathered. There were also differences when the respondents were divided and analyzed according to responsibilities and gender. Within the context of this article, we found the overall relevance of values stipulated in Al-Ta’allum to staff of KIPSAS. This study is concerned with examining the knowledge sharing behavior of staff in a PHEI. It highlights the differences in their knowledge sharing and acquisition behavior. This allows management and planner of such institutions to plan the Knowledge Management (KM) initiatives and processes with these special value indicators such as Al-Ta’allum to be taken into consideration. Based on the result, KIPSAS is able to manage knowledge sharing activities in a more effective method.

In the knowledge based economy era, the success of an organization lies more in its intellectual capital and system capabilities than its physical assets and financial capital. Therefore, professional intellects such as lawyers, doctors, systems analysts, accountants are an important source of intelligence for most organizations. Knowledge Management (KM) in a public sector organization can take advantage the transfer and sharing process of experiences, ideas and expertise of the organization’s professional intellects for the organization’s knowledge assets with the support of information technology. Therefore, this chapter presents the knowledge sharing model that interconnects KM enablers and knowledge sharing process for KM implementation success in the public sector accounting organization in Malaysia. Survey questionnaires were used as the main instrument to collect data from all public sector accountants working in the Accountant General’s Department (AGD) which is an accounting specialist department of the Federal Government in Malaysia. This selected knowledge intensive accounting organization has a large pool of public sector accountants and the core competencies of the organization are to provide timely accounting information and quality accounting services to all agencies of the Federal Government. Therefore, knowledge management (KM) in this case study organization is concerned with the flow of accounting knowledge during the sharing process of public sector accountants and getting value through the knowledge flow for the organizational performance. Since the main task of the AGD is heavily related to accounting process and technology for its financial data integrity, the statistical results of this case study research provide evidence that knowledge sharing technology has a high significant impact on the knowledge sharing performance as compared to other moderate significant factors such as leadership roles to create knowledge sharing culture, ICT skills and know-how of accountants and the ICT infrastructure and software for the accounting information system.

Purpose The growing needs of interdisciplinary research have been hindered by implementation difficulties because of factors such as the availability and distribution of related knowledge. Knowledge management could be a viable solution to address the problems of interdisciplinary research and further its synergic effect by optimizing the use of knowledge across different disciplines. A knowledge management ecological (KME) approach that facilitates the study of knowledge management in discourses between different disciplines was proposed and applied in a case study within an interdisciplinary environment comprising three disciplines: software development, software business and music education. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three groups of key informants to examine the knowledge management processes within the environment. Findings The findings reveal the details of knowledge management activities in each of the three disciplines, but the lack of collaboration between them limits the opportunity for a synergistic effect to benefit the cross-discipline environment. Originality/value This study shows how the KME approach can be used to deepen the interdisciplinary understanding of knowledge management within and between different disciplines.

In Thailand pomelo is a fruit tree that has long been grown in the central region particularly in Nakhon Chai Si district, Nakhon Pathom province where soil is relatively fertile and has conditions of sufficient water resources. In contrast, the northeast region has lower soil fertility. Most farmers grow field crops such as rice, cassava and sugarcane instead of fruit trees. However, there is one area in northeast Thailand that is famous for pomelo production in terms of quantity as well as quality for both export and local markets. This area is in Ban Thaen district, Chaiyaphum province. The research objectives of this study is to describe the context of Ban Thaen pomelo farmer group, examine different approaches and understand knowledge management processes of pomelo production. Five key informants groups were selected for the study, consisting of a group leader and group committee members identified for group discussions in order to understand the community context and factors of pomelo production of their group. A total of 17 households were selected for in-depth interviews along with participation observation among some households. Findings show that knowledge management on pomelo production in Ban Thaen is vital for their innovation and practices to increase production volume and quality. This is accomplished through knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is possible through existing social spaces in various forms.

Abstract Department of Communication and Information Technology Government Prabumulih is a device which acts as a local government responsible for the fields of transportation, communication and informatics at level Prabumulih. The Department has the tacit and explicit knowledge that has not been optimally managed and documented. Office requires a knowledge management system, as evidenced by knowledge sharing features. System development method used is the 10-step knowledge management roadmap by Amrit Tiwana . While the method of knowledge sharing using the Boyer-Moore algorithm. The results of this study are worth a Knowledge Management System applied to the department. Nūdienos dinamiškoje aplinkoje informacija ir žinios yra vieni iš esminių organizacijos išteklių ir pagrindiniai inovacijų šaltiniai. Šių išteklių tikslingas valdymas lemia organizacijų konkurencinį pranašumą kuriant didesnę pridėtinę vertę ir didinant jos procesų efektyvumą. Atsižvelgiant į Pasaulio ekonomikos forumo 2013–2014 metų šalių konkurencingumo tyrimo rezultatus, Lietuva užima 27 vietą tarp 148 valstybių pagal žmonių, turinčių aukštąjį išsilavinimą, skaičių, tačiau 44 vietą – pagal inovacijų ir verslo lankstumo subindeksą. Šie statistiniai duomenys leidžia daryti prielaidą, kad Lietuvos organizacijose žinių potencialas yra aukštas, tačiau jis nėra pakankamai išnaudojamas. Susiklosčiusi realybė verčia ieškoti būdų ir metodų, kaip būtų galima ją keisti lygiuojantis į užsienio šalių patirtį. Viena iš priežasčių, kodėl Lietuvos inovatyvumo indeksas yra ganėtinai žemas, galėtų būti ta, kad dažnai organizacijoje trūksta sistemingumo ir tikslingumo valdant žinias, nesukuriama atvira, darbuotojų pasitikėjimą skatinanti aplinka, kai darbuotojai noriai dalijasi žiniomis ir įgyta patirtimi, dėl to sukuriamos naujos prekės ir paslaugos, įgyjamas konkurencinis pranašumas. Knowledge is an inexhaustible source of creating innovative ideas, which is one of the essential conditions of innovation development. Today, knowledge management is closely associated with innovative activities. The scope of studies related to determining the impact of knowledge management on innovation is constantly increasing. In order to continuously create innovations, organizations should formulate their knowledge management strategy and integrate it into the organizational strategy, create the organizational culture which could stimulate knowledge sharing, promote continuous learning and the improvement of competencies, identify the key knowledge, create new ideas, develop and acquire new skills, constantly store and share knowledge. The article highlights knowledge management activities affecting innovation, presents an integral knowledge management model which stimulates a continuous creation of innovations, and provides a case study results demonstrating the knowledge management influence on innovation. According to the case study results, knowledge management processes, particularly knowledge sharing, storage, and creation, make the greatest impact on the continuous creation of innovations. Besides, the organizational culture and the organizational structure also influence the process of innovation creation. The knowledge processes, such as sharing and storage, make the greatest influence on the organizational, marketing and product innovation, and process innovation is impossible without knowledge acquisition and storage. Organisations seeking to continuously create different types of innovation should develop knowledge management processes, with a particular emphasis on knowledge storage while applying appropriate technological solutions, and knowledge sharing while creating a favourable organizational culture and choosing the optimal organizational structure.
