AbstractThe Department of the Environment and the Welsh Office jointly sponsored a South Wales Desk Study into the feasibility of producing thematic maps of the Mining subsidence risk for planners. A method was to be developed and tested for a 25 km2 Pilot Area centred on Ebbw Vale.The study was started by collecting geological and mining data for the Pilot Area and compiling this information on a map. It was then intended to prepare the mining subsidence map from this map by back analysing subsidence incidents to determine the hazardous areas. This simple approach could not be followed for two reasons. First, the record of mining was incomplete and it was therefore necessary to define ‘worked’ seams and areas from the total historical record and not only from the surviving mine plans. Secondly, insufficient subsidence incidents were discovered in the Pilot Area to carry out meaningful back analysis.The study was extended to collect all readily available records of subsidence incidents throughout the Coalfield. A total of 388 were traced, mainly dating from 1960. About threequarters were collapses through superficial materials and were either close to the outcrop or above mine entries, the remaining 25% propagated to the ground surface through rock. The upper limit of migration was typically 8 times the extracted height where the dip was shallow, incrasing to as much as 18 times for steep dips. Selected grout contracts and opencast mining sites were also examined to gain information on the present condition of old workings and to study the ‘reputations’ of the various seams for voids.The results of the coalfield study were applied to the Pilot Area to produce a 1:10 000 scale Development Advice Map, ‘Mining Subsidence for use by developers and planners’. The map is zoned to show areas where specialist advice is necessary to support a planning application and it also shows all mine entries traced by the desk study. The method of production is general for the South Wales Coalfield and further maps could be prepared, using the Coalfield Study, quickly and cheaply.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) and degenerative changes in the spinal system are reportedly associated with exposure to low frequency (0.5- 80 Hz) whole-body vibration (WBV). The main objective of the study was to determine prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) operators exposed to WBV in an opencast mine in western India.Methods: Forty six operators from an opencast mine were recruited as exposed group in a questionnaire based cross-sectional study. Twenty eight employees engaged in sedentary office work were taken as control. All subjects were asked about location and severity of body pain in the past 7 days and 12 months. A four point pain scale was used. Significance of difference of demographic / anthropometric parameters was studied using t-test of independent samples. Association between the pain type and exposure was obtained using Chi-square test. Risk of each type of pain was determined in terms of odds ratio. Adjusted estimate of ORs were obtained through logistic regression modelling, wherein the model fitness was judged using Hosmer-Lemeshow test.Results: The mean exposure duration was 11.30 ± 7.45 years. LBP was the most predominant MSD which showed highly significant association with exposure (P <0.001). Overall, the risk analysis revealed a significant increase in the likelihood of MSD due to exposure. 39% of the exposed group required medical attention.Conclusions: Based on subjective response of exposed group, it can be said that prevalence of musculoskeletal pain as manifestation of MSD due to exposure to WBV especially LBP is high among HEMM operators which affected their quality of life.

Often in deposits developed by underground mining, the task is to control the state of the earth's surface within the mine field. And this problem is even more acute in the case of combined open-underground mining. The Goroblagodatskoe iron ore deposit has been developed by a combined method for more than 40 years. The article describes the methodology and results of applying the geophysical diagnostic method at a mining facility developed by a combined open-underground method - the spectral seismic profiling method (SSP). The application of this method is justified. This method has shown its sufficient efficiency in terms of time costs and sufficient reliability for local studies. The results of field and desk studies are obtained, an assessment of the nature of the object is given, which justifies the use of further measures for the safe development of the object.

India is in the list of fastest growing countries of the world. India's energy needs are also increasing due to population and industrial growth for improving quality of living style. In India, coal is major input infrastructure industries for example Power plants, Steel plants and Cement industries. India’s 52% of primary energy is coal dependent1. 66% of India's power generation depends upon coal production1. Jharia Coalfield (JCF) is falling in the Lower Gondwana Coalfields of India. The area of the JCF is about 450 km2. It is important for the major supply of precious coking coal required for steel plants in India. It is located in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand state of India, The latitude is 23° 39' to 23° 48' N and longitude is 86° 11' to 86° 27' E for the Jharia coalfield. Based on environmental parameters, all the 103 mines of BCCL have been grouped under 17 Clusters. A cluster consists of a group of mines with mine lease boundary lying in close vicinity and includes-Operating mines, Abandoned/ closed mines and proposed projects.The focused study area is in the western part of the Jharia coalfield is named as Cluster XV group of mines of BCCL consists of four mines, Kharkharee Colliery (UG), Dharmaband Colliery (UG), Madhuband Colliery (UG) and Phularitand Colliery (UG) .The present study was carried out with the objective to measure the ambient air quality of the study area with reference to particulate matter (SPM, PM10 & PM2.5). Ambient air monitoring results have shown that the observe air quality were found within the limit prescribed by MoEF / CPCB. It may due to Underground mines as there are pollution causing lesser activities involved in the UG mining process compared to opencast mining. Implementation of Master plan for Jharia coalfields for environmental management has also improve the air quality in the area10,11.

In the paper the influence of surface mining on the environment is presented. The sizes of mining areas and depression funnels has been shown. Also are presented the amount of cover materials and the quantity of water pumped out from the mines in five regions of brown coal mining in Poland.Various conceptions of land reclamation are discussed, from the method of pioneer vegetation in the years of 1950 - 1970, trough selective excavation of the humus soil in the years 1970 - 1980, to conception of the direct introduction of the final type of vegetation.In the lost part of the paper three models of agricultural land remediation are discussed, as well as the yields of the cultivated plants on recultivated former mining areas.

There have some advantages like as Good working conditions, High Security, Guaranteed production capacity and Low loss for Open pit mining, therefore the degree of opencast mining increasing. In this paper numerical simulation and limit equilibrium are used for Stability of west project of side slope which are under the conditions of Normal and Saturation. Draw slope stability results under the two conditions in order to take appropriate measures to provide appropriate post- mining safety protection.
