In this paper a program developed in MATLAB programming language to aid in the design of all-pole active filters using operational amplifiers is presented. The filter structure chosen was the Sallen-Key that furnishes a filter with low sensitivity to element tolerances and it is easy to implement in hardware.

The virtual earth concept, well known to designers of active electronic circuits with operational amplifier components, is shown to have a novel bicausal bond graph interpretation. This leads to simplified bond graph modelling of such circuits. Some simple operational amplifier circuits, together with a more complex active filter, are used to illustrate the approach. A complex electromechanical system shows that the method is useful in creating a unified bond graph model of systems involving both analogue electronic and mechanical systems.

Second order active filters using single and two operational amplifiers at high frequencies and/or large-signal levels are investigated for their nonlinear performance. A general procedure using the Volterra series in presented regarding intermodulation distortion. Computer results by implementation in a program “Distortion Analysis” demonstrate the accuracy of the analysis technique.
