Anthropogenic activities have substantially changed natural landscapes, especially in regions which are extremely affected by population growth and climate change such as East African countries. Understanding the patterns of land-use and land-cover (LULC) change is important for efficient environmental management, including effective water management practice. Using remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS), this study focused on changes in LULC patterns of the upstream and downstream Wami River Basin over 16 years. Multitemporal satellite imagery of the Landsat series was used to map LULC changes and was divided into three stages (2000–2006, 2006–2011, and 2011–2016). The results for the change-detection analysis and the change matrix table from 2000 to 2016 show the extent of LULC changes occurring in different LULC classes, while most of the grassland, bushland, and woodland were intensively changed to cultivated land both upstream and downstream. These changes indicate that the increase of cultivated land was the result of population growth, especially downstream, while the primary socioeconomic activity remains agriculture both upstream and downstream. In general, net gain and net loss were observed downstream, which indicate that it was more affected compared to upstream. Hence, proper management of the basin, including land use planning, is required to avoid resources-use conflict between upstream and downstream users.

Review of the Voçorocamento and Proposed Land Use on the South Coast of Paraiba (Brazil) ABSTRACTThe main objective of this work is to make a proposal of natural resources management with the aim of generate cartography of natural hazards linked to gullies. The final aim of the research is to create cartography of natural hazards linked to gullies processes in order to create corridors between patches of Atlantic Forest. A description of two voçorocas was executed to formulate a hypotesis  aiming to explain the genesis of the erosion based on land uses changes. Finally we explained the recover and stabilitation process on the erosion carried out by the LEPAN (Laboratory of Spacial Analisis - Federal Universtity of Paraiba). Our area is very susceptible to gully processes due his geomorphology, climatology and human occupation. Keywords: Voçoroca, piping, laterite, erosion.

Understanding how indigenous people manage their natural resources can provide a basis for formulating appropriate policies for natural resources management that benefits them while preserving their cultural beliefs. The objective of this study is to investigate the factors that influence the management of natural resources and the conservation of river ecology by the indigenous people in the Nongchaiwan wetland. We conducted in-depth interviews with 5 key informants and quantitative surveys with 158 households in two phases over a period of 3 years. Ancestral spiritual beliefs that are still salient in the Lower Songkhram River Basin influence natural resources management because they traditionally link people and natural resources. Such spiritual beliefs in the Lower Songkhram River Basin supported the indigenous people to continue conserving the natural resources in their territory. In addition, property rights granted to indigenous people also contribute to the conservation of natural resources. Our findings suggest that policy makers should engage with local beliefs in order to achieve sustainable resource management and, therefore, such practices should be recognized and included in the government’s policies on natural resources management in locations, where indigenous people live for generations.

There is little discussion regarding natural resources management issues in Nigeria, unlike many other places around the world, where such issues have made significant contributions to research growth. This is a troubling situation that complicates Nigeria's present need to address her increasing sequence of aggravations related to land cover modifications. Sustainable use of land, water, solid minerals, and forest is difficult and overwhelms local efforts. Demographic pressures and the corresponding need for developments and societal livability have a proclivity to overuse land resources and impact negatively on their present quality and future regeneration. Traditional and indigenous approaches are still the bases of natural resources management. The cumulative challenges of these issues with other prevalent anomalies are increasingly compromising Nigeria's land resources base. However, geo-spatial technology with its potential for policy and decision-support is being set forth to address these challenges and to fill the current gaps in knowledge of natural resources management.

According to the legal norms of the Russian Federation in the ownership, usage and disposal of natural resources the author analyses interaction between natural resources users and local authorities. The interaction is based upon ecological and economic factors, which cause the peculiarities of requirements put before natural resource users in the Far North. The strategic directions of resource saving economic development of these regions are considered.
