The paper focuses upon the control over environmental pollution of water bodies by human waste products in urban areas, which can be carried out by monitoring hydrobiological indi-cators. In the course of study undertaken in May 2017 and 2018 there was assessed the ecological and sanitary status of the Volga and Kutum rivers that flow on the territory of Astrakhan. Samples were taken at four stations; the choice of station location was determined by the presence of pollutant sources: proximity of the city market or the power plant. Quantitative and qualitative indicators of the state of phytoplankton were used as hydrobiological indicators; the total number of bacteria and the total content of coliform bacteria were evaluated as microbiological indicators. During the study period the ecological and sanitary state of water was rated as satisfactory. The number of algae taxa increased insignificantly (by 3 units), diatoms predominated in the number of genera and number. Despite the presence of 4-5 species of pure water representatives in the investigated waters, the sanitary and bacteriological situation at all the studied stations was found unfavorable; the water was characterized as polluted and dirty. In 2018, there was registered deterioration of water quality compared to 2017, while the calculated saprobity index in the Kutum river indicates the water quality improvement downstream. The increasing value of the water saprobity index in the Kutum river indicates a tendency toward the growing level of organic pollution and necessitates a comprehensive analysis of hydrobiological indicators for systematic monitoring the aquatic environment.

The problem of the treatment of contaminated wastewaters is of the upmost worldwide interest. This contamination occurs via the presence of inorganic or organic contaminants of different nature in relation with the industry they come from. In the case of organic dyes, their environmental impact, and thus, their toxicity come from the air (releasing of dust and particulate matter), solid (scrap of textile fabrics, sludges), though the great pollution, caused from dyes, comes from the discharge of untreated effluents into waters, contributing to increase the level of BOD and COD in these liquid streams; this discharge is normally accompanied by water coloration, which low the water quality, and caused a secondary issue in the wastewater treatment. Among separation technologies, adsorption processing is one of the most popular, due to its versatility, easiness of work, and possibility of scaling-up in the eve of the treatment of large wastewater volumes. Within a miriade of potential adsorbents for the removal of organic dyes, this work presented the most recent advances in the topic.

The quality of life depends on water quality. Good water quality and the rational use of water are an absolute need of the new millennium. Although it is an ecological and health priority to prohibit the contamination of water and water protection, it is a responsibility for environmental engineers and chemists to develop and apply effective methods for monitoring and controlling of water quality, and at that way prevent ecological and technological catastrophe on time. In this paper modern methods and process for monitoring, control and detection of cyanide in water and wastewater are presented. Recent developments in instrumental techniques and treatment for determination of this toxic substance in water are described, particularly the methods according to green analytical aspects.

Remote sensing by satellite-borne sensors presents a significant opportunity to enhance the spatio-temporal coverage of environmental monitoring programmes for lakes, but the estimation of classic water quality attributes from inland water bodies has not reached operational status due to the difficulty of discerning the spectral signatures of optically active water constituents. Determination of water colour, as perceived by the human eye, does not require knowledge of inherent optical properties and therefore represents a generally applicable remotely-sensed water quality attribute. In this paper, we implemented a recent algorithm for the retrieval of colour parameters (hue angle, dominant wavelength) and derived a new correction for colour purity to account for the spectral bandpass of the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI). We used this algorithm to calculate water colour on almost 45,000 observations over four years from 1486 lakes from a diverse range of optical water types in New Zealand. We show that the most prevalent lake colours are yellow-orange and blue, respectively, while green observations are comparatively rare. About 40% of the study lakes show transitions between colours at a range of time scales, including seasonal. A preliminary exploratory analysis suggests that both geo-physical and anthropogenic factors, such as catchment land use, provide environmental control of lake colour and are promising avenues for future analysis.

ABSTRACT More information is needed on the disinfection efficacy of chlorine for viruses in source water. In this study, chlorine disinfection efficacy was investigated for USEPA Contaminant Candidate List viruses coxsackievirus B5 (CVB5), echovirus 1 (E1), murine norovirus (MNV), and human adenovirus 2 (HAdV2) in one untreated groundwater source and two partially treated surface waters. Disinfection experiments using pH 7 and 8 source water were carried out in duplicate, using 0.2 and 1 mg/liter free chlorine at 5 and 15�C. The efficiency factor Hom (EFH) model was used to calculate disinfectant concentration � contact time (CT) values (mg�min/liter) required to achieve 2-, 3-, and 4-log10 reductions in viral titers. In all water types, chlorine disinfection was most effective for MNV, with 3-log10 CT values at 5�C ranging from ≤0.020 to 0.034. Chlorine disinfection was least effective for CVB5 in all water types, with 3-log10 CT values at 5�C ranging from 2.3 to 7.9. Overall, disinfection proceeded faster at 15�C and pH 7 for all water types. Inactivation of the study viruses was significantly different between water types, but no single source water had consistently different inactivation rates than another. CT values for CVB5 in one type of source water exceeded the recommended CT values set forth by USEPA's Guidance Manual for Compliance with the Filtration and Disinfection Requirements for Public Water Systems using Surface Water Sources. The results of this study demonstrate that water quality plays a substantial role in the inactivation of viruses and should be considered when developing chlorination plans.

Introduction. The increasing bacterial contamination of water bodies requires an increase in water quality control’s reliability to ensure epidemic safety against waterborne infections. Therefore, researchers in both Russia and Europe came to the conclusion that it is necessary to search for indicator microorganisms that can more accurately suggest the presence of pathogens. microorganisms in water than traditional indicators. The aim of the study was to justify the introduction of indicator indices of fecal contamination “generalized coliform bacteria” and Escherichia coli to assess the safety of drinking water Material and methods. The article provides an analysis of domestic and international regulatory documents and literary materials regulating the quality of drinking water in terms of sanitary and microbiological indicators and assessment criteria. The results of many years of experimental and field research carried out by research organizations and practical organizations of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare are presented. Results. On the territory of Russia, “general coliform bacteria,” is one of the indicator indices chosen according to the fermentation of lactose, determine the safety of drinking water. The water does not take into account pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Shigella) and a number of lactose-negative opportunistic bacteria, causative agents of intestinal infections. The study of microorganisms isolated from the feces of patients confirms the frequency of occurrence of lactose-negative microorganisms to varying from 20 to 100% of strains. With an annual trend towards a decrease in the percentage of non-standard drinking water samples in terms of microbiological indices, general intestinal infections (GII) of unknown etiology increase, i.e. risk of GII. If the quality of drinking water does not correspond to thermotolerant coliform bacteria (TCB), 95% of samples contain E. coli. Therefore, the determination of E. coli more reliably indicates the intake of fresh fecal contamination and provides efficiency in taking measures to eliminate an unfavorable situation than TCB. Conclusion. Reasons are given for the introduction of more reliable microbiological indicators of water safety control, such as - “generalized coliform bacteria” with the preservation of the abbreviation GCB, combining both lactose-positive and lactose-negative bacteria, determined by the sign of glucose fermentation, negative oxidase test and negative stain according to Gram and E. coli as an indicator of recent faecal contamination, which will allow the assessment of water quality for a wide range of bacteria of the order Enterobacterials, corresponding to the modern taxonomy of Enterobacteriaceae NCBI, will ensure harmonization with international requirements and the safety of drinking water for the population.

Three emergencies that occurred on the territory of the Republic of Khakassia, their potential influence on sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population (using water factor as an example) were investigated. We used methods of data collection, analysis and further quality evaluation of fresh water. The results of 2956 analyses of fresh water from centralized sources of drinking water supply and water distribution network of the damaged areas were processed. It was determined that the most substantial deterioration of fresh water quality according to microbiological indicators was recorded in the flood period and upon the liquidation of the consequences of mass fire.
